That makes 37 seconds look like a booger, doesn't it?
That stat from Nantz is insane. Mahomes threw for 177 yards β after the two minute warning!

Knowing their D was gassed and would not stop Mahomes, Bills best chance was to open the OT with an onside kick. No one would expect it
@SteveLuke posted:So many great WRs in that 2020 draft ... who did we take again in round 4 ... after not taking one in rounds 1-3?
We do what we do.
They didn't get Favre weapons (at least Ron Wolf admitted the mistake), they haven't gotten Rodgers weapons.
BUF had #1 D and #1 scoring D. They had to believe they would come up with a stop somehow in those final minutes. Hard to blame them, no matter how gassed.
The bigger question is how did KC get their D from being a huge liability through the first half of the season to one of the top units by playoff time? It's like they just flipped a switch. Same with Mahomes and the offense. So many people writing them off and commenting how fall Mahomes and Reid had fallen then click. Back in the AFCCG. Granted their D was invisible in the last couple minutes tonight but the same thing happened to BUF.
Best. Game. Ever.
Buffalo/KC was a great game!!!

They went out and got Melvin Ingram for fairly cheap, which helped a lot. Adding one more pass rusher was huge for them considering most opponents had time to just target whomever Sorenson was covering and wait for them to get open.

Weapons who he wouldn't throw to unless their name was Adams?
Playoff games this year so far have some funky mojo in them.
The wild card round games were mostly snooze fests, although there was some excitement generated in the Bungles/Raiders and 49ers/Cowboys games.
This round started out much the same, but the last quarter of the Rams/Bucs had lots of drama and excitement. Bills/Chefs was a good game, then had that big explosion at the end and in OT.
Can't wait to see what happens next Sunday!

Wolf did go and get Favre Keith Jackson. Without Jackson they don't win that Super Bowl. He later had Ahman Green. That was a weapon.
Jennings and Nelson weren't exactly nobodies, and Adams is on a HOF trajectory.
The 2010 and 2011 teams were stacked. Cobb and then DA was the last real investment of a high pick at WR. Lacy and Franklin were supposed to be a real good smash and dash combo. AJ and AJ look like a top duo. But that's about it. Handful of good OL.
But that's what happens when you commit most of your draft capital to defense for a decade. Hard to blame them. The D was letting them down in almost every post season exit until recently. This team is just the little dutch boy sticking his finger in holes in the dam. Plug one and another springs open.
When things are grim be the Grim Reaper.

We all know βweaponsβ is another name for those shiny wideouts that so many of this board spending all their waking hours drooling over.

A couple of wideouts in 30 years.
in one or two hundred years, bunyonish playoffs,
Fascinating read about Buffalo blowing their game against Kansas City in the last 13 seconds. At Go Long Hopefully the link works....
I saw Allen hugging somebody on the sideline right after their last TD.. I said out loud to my bewildered twin toddlers, "what is he celebrating? there's still 13 seconds on the clock!".

Or you mean drafting a competent one every decade when the draft class is insanely deep and the team actually needs more than one WR?

Because the other "weapons" are a bunch of 5th, 6th rounders and UDFAs who's reliability isn't NFL caliber?
Yeah, them.
I'm sure he'd completely ignore a player like Tee Higgins or Chase Claypool.
They had a helluva run on WR's from Jennings, Finley (TE), Jordy, Jones, Cobb, Adams. Even one of their castoffs started in MIN for a while...Charles Johnson? I wonder if there was a particular scout behind that skill.
12 throws to players he trusts...so does Tom Brady, so does every starting QB. Why are you going to throw to a guy who may or may not catch it, especially in a playoff game?
It's Gute's job to get him more guys who are reliable...MVS in 4 years in the league had one year, 2021, where he didn't drop a bunch of balls. But he was hurt for the NFC Divisional game. 12 went to Tonyan a lot in 2020...before he got hurt, Tonyan was average the same YPC as he did last year.
Deguara and Dafney haven't proven they are consistently reliable yet. Neither has Lazard for that matter. Marcedes is a great blocker, good for an occasional surprise target...but in the biggest game of the year, he fucking fumbled for what seemed to be the turning point in the game. Cobb was hurt a lot. EQ sucks ass. 12 went to the two best weapons he had on the field vs the Niners...33 and 17.
Going forward, it's up to Gute to get more capable weapons than the Island of Misfit Toys we have at WR. Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman and Chase Claypool all would have been better options at #2 than anyone we have on the roster.
It's a deep TE class this year...lacking talent in the first round, but plenty of guys in rounds 3-5 that will be solid, if not spectacular NFL TE. I give Gute credit for drafting Turdburger...no one knew he'd be useless as he was. If we are relying on Tonyan coming off an ACL, Dafney, Deguara and perhaps a middling veteran FA, then our TE room won't have improved.
Gute needs to find WR that have a fucking work ethic. That's what keeps guys like Lazard and MVS on the level of "they have the talent, BUT..."
Let me let you in on a little secret...17 isn't great because of his speed, or strength, or quickness....he is elite because he works his fucking ass off. Yeah, guys like Lazard and MVS work hard...but not at 17's level.
So who do you think had a better chance of catching the last pass, Adams doubled covered or Lazard uncovered by 15 yards?
@FLPACKER posted:So who do you think had a better chance of catching the last pass, Adams doubled covered or Lazard uncovered by 15 yards?
Since the pass was thrown 30 yards deeper than Lazard and was intended for Adams, I'm going with Adams had the better chance to catch the last pass.
And how does one know that other receivers don't work as hard as 17?
LInk?
17 surely has elite talent, not just work ethic.

They won 39 games with those receivers.
I love that response. Don't think it had anything to do with the guy throwing the ball right?
Eye ball test = fail
You guys get all fucking excited because MVS gets a huge chunk play every other week and all of sudden he's a legit #2. Then come the stats. Well, let me use one of the favorite stat manipulation points. "If you take away that one big catch . . . ".
It's okay to say they need a WR. All of sudden WR is a shiny luxury but a scrub TE is the greatest pick ever!
Lazard is the closest thing to a legit NFL receiver outside of Adams. He's a great blocker and has nice hands but he can be limited and disappear.
Jesus, Rodgers sucked and the continued bitching about him while ignoring the rest of the team failures is beyond stupid. Maybe he wouldn't suck if he rightfully trusted other receivers to make plays?
It's the same damn thing every time. You can look great in the regular season but every friggin' weakness you have will be exposed in the playoffs. Doesn't matter if you're a super star or not. Put together a complete fucking team.
I'm over the fallacy of the passing league. Get a crazy good defense and they can cover for slap dick offensery.
Those WR's helped get the team to another division title. If that's enough for some people, fine. But it's not enough to beat the SF's and TB's in the playoffs.
Using that argument, the ST was part of the same team that won another division title and the #1 seed. Taking the argument to an extreme for the sake of the point.
Or maybe Rodgers just isnβt a good playoff QB?
Clayton Kershaw is 185-84 with 2.49 ERA in the regular season. Heβs 13-12 with a 4.19 ERA in the postseason.
Regardless, I do agree that the Packers need better balance. All phases. And honestly MLF and his staff need to coach better as well.
I donβt care how many regular season games they win. Much like the Milwaukee Bucks I donβt care. Advance far into the playoffs and win the fucker. Or at least get there.
A talented cast at WR can help a QB as well regardless of how great a QB he supposedly is. That was my point. Pretty easy for a playoff caliber defense to shut down "good enough" WR and force the Rodgers Yips to appear.
9ers didn't even cover DeSuperStar TE/FB and they were right.
SF didn't shut down the "good enough" WRs.
9ers didn't even cover DeSuperStar TE/FB and they were right.
And yet Rodgers only targeted him 1 time.

Cast? Fuck I'd settle for just one more quality guy across from 17
You want an example of one of the worst playoff performances by a QB in Packers' history?
17-30 for 244 yards, 0 TDs, and 2 interceptions. This QB had a QB rating of 55.4, but it was even worse than that.
The Packers were up 14-0 with under 2 minutes left in the first half. They drove to the opponents 41 and had 1st and 10 with 53 seconds left and timeouts remaining. If they pick up another 25 yards, they can make it a 3 score game even in the cold weather. Instead, the QB throws a pick on 1st and 10. Just a terrible decision.
The opponent gets the ball to open the 2nd half and the defense forces a 3 and out. The Packers mount a long drive and have 3rd and goal at the 6. The Packer QB throws an interception that almost gets returned for a Pick 6. If they simply kneel on third down, they kick a 23 yard FG to go up 3 possessions in cold weather. It was one of the worst interceptions you'll ever see given the situation.
After that interception, the Packers have 5 possessions the rest of the game and in 19 plays they gain a total of 68 yards and punt every time. Despite dominating the first 3 quarters completely and playing against a backup QB, the Packers can't clinch a win until the last minute when a rookie DB picks off a pass in the end zone when they are up 7, and the only reason they weren't in position to lose on that drive was a pick 6 from a 350 pound DT earlier in the 4th quarter.
You've probably figured out by now that that QB was Aaron Rodgers in the NFC title game in 2011 at Soldier Field. He was terrible and we all forgot about it because the defense bailed him out. Also, almost more relevant to the loss last weekend was that the Packers special teams contained one of the best return men of all time in Devin Hester. He had 1 kickoff return for 24 yards and 3 punt returns for 16 yards. The Packers also valued special teams enough that they had their starting RB (and really only RB) James Starks return kickoffs. Punt returns were handled by Pro Bowl CB Tramon Williams or future HOFer Charles Woodson. Compare that to running Amari Rodgers out there and hoping that he didn't screw up. Also, can you imagine our 2021 special teams going against someone like Devin Hester?
For all the talk about how Rodgers played poorly and let them down (and he did) and how stagnant MLF's play calling appeared (it was - no short passing game, WR screens, jet sweeps, even trying a trick play, etc.); they still win with even D- minus special teams.
The 2010 Packers took care of that part of the game and won in spite of the QB play. The 2021 Packers didn't. And we all saw it coming, including MLF and he didn't seem to try to fix it.
Word from the grassy knoll was that the hit he took on his run in for the TD early in that game injured his shoulder or gave him a mild concussion. He was playing very well before that hit then went dark most of the rest of the game.
