The GBP are legitimate title contenders.  As we get ready to embark on another hunt for the trophy with a legitimate chance to grab it, let's take a step back and just appreciate what we've been watching.  Those of us who endured the 70's and 80's should especially savor this time.

I found myself watching this vid tonight as I got fired up for another potentially awesome year.

It is time.

*Dear Pants-Pissers:

Please stay the hell out of this thread.  I get it - GB is facing the BIG BAD 49ers and IT'S A REFERENDUM ON THE STATE OF THE GBP!  Fine.  There are plenty of threads all over the place already beating that into the ground.  This is a GBP appreciation thread, and an open acknowledgement that we're pretty damn lucky to be watching this consistently-fantastic team get ready for another run.

The only other team in the league that has the same run over the last 5 years is the Patriots.

There's 30 other teams that want to be like the Packers & would kill for that type of consistency.

No matter what happens on Sunday, I'm proud of this team & proud to be a Green Bay Packer fan

Born in 1970.  One of my first memories was a Shriners game in 76.  Packers got their asses kicked.  David Beverly had a like 1 yard punt after it bounced backwards.  Lynn Dickey breaking his leg every other year.  Saw 8-7-1 when I was 8.  My Dad told me it may be the only winning season I'll ever see.  (Yeah, I get it they went 10-4 when I was 2...) The 80's and Gregg were a train wreck.  Eddie Lee Ivory blowing out his knee in the first game.  Getting destroyed by the Bears 61-7 - BTW, anyone that hates the Vikings more than the Bears needs to sit down and have that game explained to them.

Bottom line:

First 21 years of my life - 3 winning seasons (notice winning, not .500)

Second 21 years of my life - 17 winning seasons.

5 years of success?  Dude, this org has had a run since 1992 with 15 playoff appearances, 2 Super Bowls, and legitimately 11 years where they were Super Bowl contenders, and I'd say they legitimately could have had 3-4 more Super Bowl titles (97, 03, 07, 11).  Every team other than the Pats would trade everything for that sustained success.

Seriously.  Step back.  Look at this page.  The 70's and 80's we had 2 playoff appearances.  And one was the stupid strike season.  Compared to 2 losing seasons since 91.

Look, it sucks not winning it all.  I HATE THE NINERS WITH A BURNING WHITE HATE THAT WOULD FUEL 10000 SUNS and it would suck to lose Sunday.

But, dammit JJSD is dead nuts on here.  It's football.  It's MY team. Literally.  It's yet another year where we are in the hunt to win it all.  This organization is one of the 2-3 that every single organization in the NFL looks to as the example of what they want to be.

My dad telling me "this may be the only winning season you see son" in 78 seems insane today for younger fans.  Enjoy this.  Enjoy every game.  Get happy get angry get pissed get pumped up, but don't lose sight of the fact that probably 30 fan bases would chop their arms off for their team to have the success we've enjoyed the last 21 years.

Thanks JJSD - I'm pouring a glass of scotch in honor of the Packers, and this thread.

/anyone know what Al thinks?

DAMN THAT'S SWEET!!! I so want to see a hit like that on Kaepernick Sunday and the ball come popping out!

On another note, I was born in 1961 and remember when Lombardi left and what happened after. I used to go outside after the Packer games and my brother played Bart Starr and I was Carroll Dale. I've seen some bad teams over the years but I can't remember the last one I didn't watch. I remember running backs like Eric Torkelson and quarterbacks like Jim Del Gaizo. Believe me, my kids grew up spoiled and I hope they'll stick with the team when things aren't so good anymore.

Now you've got me fired up JJSD!!!!

St. Vincent's Day

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that eats brats with me
Shall be my brother; be he never so enraged,
This win shall gentle his temper;
And gentlemen in Packerland now in bed
Shall think themselves a Jaymo they were not here,
And hold their fandom cheap whilst any speaks
That watched with us upon Saint Vincent's day.

Edited for length.

Disappointing.  I was hoping to read more about S & T deficiencies, injuries, Campen, Slowdum, SF's domination and whiney coaches of opposing teams.

Leave to JJ to **** up a good culture of poopy pants.

Great thread and a good way to gain back some perspective on the Packers and life in general.

Much like CA I was born in the early 70s.  Watched a lot of BAD Green Bay Packers football over the years until Bob Harlan and Ron Wolf showed up and turned the franchise around and they haven't looked back since.

I think at times we do take their success for granted very much like Badgers football.  Some fans have only experienced those teams at or near their best but a lot of people can remember the lean years as well.   I'm lucky to have watched two championship seasons in my lifetime and hopefully at some point the Badgers can get there but several Rose Bowls aren't bad either.

Even if they get the crap kicked out of them by the Niners it's all good because over the long haul this team is built for success.  Very few other teams have sustained nearly 20 years of relevance and personally, as long as TT and Rodgers are leading the club this team has a legit chance every year to win it all.  That's a great place to be and I'm sure 20+ other teams would love to trade places with the Packers.

From McGinn
At 25.66 years, the  rank as the youngest team in the NFC North for the ninth straight year. Ted Thompson's tenure is nine yrs long.

Thanks for the dose of reality JJ. .703 winning percentage since 2009 with one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. Can't argue with draft and develop. Or all the winning.

Nothing beats knowing your team is one of 3-4 teams that has a realistic opportunity to win the Lombardi before the season starts. It's going to be like that for a while in GB.

I also believe that as the next few years unfold we'll look back at Teds 2013 draft at his masterpiece. Lacy, Jones, Bakhtiari, Hyde, Franklin, Mulumba, Barrington, and in time Tretter all look like they have the tools to help improve an already solid roster.

Great to be a Packer fan.

So much to love about this team so far:

-ARodge obviously

-One of the top rising WR's in the game (Cobb) with two solid vets (Jones and Nelson)

-Based on early returns (Lacy, Bahktiari, Hyde, maybe even Jones), this already looks to be one of TT's best draft classes.

-Perry, Neal and Quarless are back. We can finally see what they're capable of.

-First-string D-Line looked much improved in preseason

-They have a running back. Maybe two.

-Finley's going to be motivated since it's a contract year. Put-up or shut-up for him.

-Biggest weakness is o-line, but ONLY because of injuries. If Bulaga, Tretter, and Sherrod were on the main 53, there would be a different tune. That's as negative as I'll get.

-Finally, from what I'm getting from reading various articles, sounds like GBP coaches and players have a major chip on their shoulder. They're tired of the discount double chokes and the rantings that the defense is among the worst in the league. They're angry. And some cocky QB or two is going to pay heavily for that this season. Enkpy.

Fantastic thread!

I hear ya! The 70s and 80s were painful. Harlan, Wolf and company got us back in the mix and we'll forever be in their debt to get people who know what they're doing back in charge. Even the much maligned Mike Sherman was winning games while wasting draft choices. The organization is the envy of the league.

Go get 'em! Sunday will be just the start of something special again...

Outstanding thread JJSD. Dude you've managed to surgically remove all the poopy diapers from this thread with only the staph infection known as hntr74 rearing its infected head.

Born in '58 into a household of Bear fans so I was only "allowed" to watch the Packers twice a year when they played the Bears. I learned to appreciate every little tidbit of Packer news I could find. I'm proud to be a Packer fan and will enjoy the ride no matter how it ends.

Bring on the Whiners!

Whole different appreciation of Packer football the the internet era fans.

Used to have to drive up to the tallest hill in Dubuque to be able to tune in the game on the radio.   Maybe twice per year see the packers on TV because they played the BoBs.   They were never on MNF.

Packer Report - think that was the name of it.....remember from like 78-82 used to check the local grocery store newsstand on a daily basis and see if it came in.   The Sporting News every Saturday to get an tidbit of Packer news.

Funny how now just log into twitter or many other sources and get information overload.    And can see every play of every game and review it at my leisure due to Sunday ticket.

As one who had to endure those miserable losing

Packers years so long ago I truly appreciate the administration,Bob Harlan in particular, bringing in Ron Wolfe and Mike Holmgren to finally turn it around and continuing with todays braintrust.those too young to remember have no idea just how much agonizing we fans did in those miserable years of Packers football but just picture how it was only winning five games a season(if lucky) with no hope of improvement in our lifetime and you may get the  general idea.

My Top 5 Games (in my lifetime):

1. Pack over Niners in '95 Divisional Round

2. Bear Replay Game with the Majik Man

3. Pack over Niners on Monday Night in '96

4. Super Bowl over Pittsburgh

5. Monday Night Shootout Win over Washington in '83

I actually had more fun watching their latest triumph against Pittsburgh because it all seemed so improbable.  They barely made it into the playoffs and beat several good teams and then the BoBs at their place with a banged up roster.  That and Rodgers got over on the critics.

SB XXXI was awesome but more a relief than anything else because I had no doubts they would beat New England.   Wire to wire that year GB was the best team and maybe one of the best teams in NFL history.
What about the XMas eve game against MN?   Was that 2002 or 2003?   Seeing and hearing Mike Tice melt down was classic.   "calm down calm down"

Loved the 1993 playoff game at Deetoilet too.  Sterling Sharpe wins it on the bomb play and folks at my place went bat **** crazy.

Used to have to drive up to the tallest hill in Dubuque to be able to tune in the game on the radio.

This. I wasn't allowed to start the engine so I sat in the drive way in sub-zero temps listening to games. WTMJ's signal was just barely strong enough in northern Indiana most games for me, other times I remember being crushed because the static was just too much.

Packer Report - think that was the name of it.....remember from like 78-82 used to check the local grocery store newsstand on a daily basis and see if it came in.   The Sporting News every Saturday to get an tidbit of Packer news.

Ray Nitschke's Packer Report was a god send. I revered every issue more than the bible.

Born in 48 so I truly have seen it all.  Highs, lows and in betweens. I have lived outside of Packerland for most of the years and have watched games in countless Packer bars( currently Tonys in Colo Springs) and am always amazed at how many Of us there are. We truly are legion, wear a Packer cap or t shirt anywhere and you will be greeted kindly .

After the highs of the 60's we had a few tough yrs (decades?) but who among us wasn't stirred by the rallying cry of the early 90's,   "The Pack is Back" ?

Boys and girls, we are back big time, the envy of the league and I dare say the sports world.

Go Pack !

Spot on Shoeless....I want to party with you....The static was still brutal.   Did not mean to imply I was listening to a Hi Def stereo concert.

Would try and cherry pick through the static wtf just happened.

Then would watch MNF halftime show to see if something cool enough happened during the packers game that you just might catch some actual video of it.

That was a good one. Two things I remember:

1. Watching it on a fuzzy VHS tape after Christmas Eve service.

2. Feeble tackling attempts by Joey Thomas.

I don't think I've ever in my life thought "hey a pick 6 would be great here" and then had it happen.

I ain't bragging and I ain't no swami but that actually has happened quite a few times for me.  Last year in SF playoff game, was getting tired of what was happening and they were lining up and I said in response to what the announcers were saying "Oh yeah, watch this!" and Shields picks kapernicus for 6.

Football, like life, enjoy the journey.  Which is far easier to do with a well managed football club like the GBP has been for decades.

From Packers.com DOPE SHEET

  • Under Head Coach Mike McCarthy, the Packers have won five of their last six season openers, which is tied for the No. 2 mark in the NFL with Baltimore over that span behind only New England (6-0 since 2007).
  • That included five straight Week 1 wins from 2007-11, which made McCarthy the only head coach in franchise history to accomplish that feat.
  • Green Bay has 52 wins on Kickoff Weekend, second most in NFL history behind only the Chicago Bears (53 victories in Week 1).
  • This will mark just the second time in McCarthy’s eight seasons (2006-13) that the Packers have opened their season away from Lambeau Field. The only other instance over that span was in 2010 at Philadelphia.
  • joined Vince Lombardi and Mike Holmgren as the only coaches to guide the Packers to a Super Bowl title with a win over Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLV.
  • Has led the Packers to playoff appearances in five of his seven seasons at the helm, and the team’s five postseason berths over the past six seasons are the most by an NFC team.
  • Led Green Bay to 47 regular-season victories from 2009-12, the second most in the NFL over that span and the second most in franchise history over a four-year period.
  • His .656 winning percentage (including playoffs) ranks No. 3 among active NFL coache
  • Green Bay has won its first road game in six of seven seasons under McCarthy, with last season at Seattle in Week 3 the lone exception.
  • The Packers have an all-time record of 53-37-2 (.596) in road openers, the most wins and third-best winning percentage in the NFL.
  • With a six-game winning streak in the first road game of the season from 2006-11, McCarthy joined Vince Lombardi (eight straight, 1960-67) as the only coaches in team history to win six or more consecutive road openers.

ROLLING ON THE ROAD

  • Since taking over as the starter in 2008, QB Aaron Rodgers has been one of the most effective signal-callers in the league away from home.
  • A look at where Rodgers ranks in several categories on the road in the regular season since ’08 (min. 500 attempts):

Quarterback
, Passer Rating

  • 1. Aaron Rodgers, GB, 103.0
  • 2. Tom Brady, NE, 100.3
  • 3. Peyton Manning, IND/DEN, 98.1

Quarterback, TD/INT Ratio

  • 1. Aaron Rodgers, GB, 3.52 (81/23)
  • 2. Tom Brady, NE, 3.04 (70/23)
  • 3. Tony Romo, DAL, 2.12 (53/25)

Over the last two seasons, Rodgers has completed 369 of 550 passes (67.1 percent) for 43 TDs and five INTs for a 116.2 passer rating on the road. That passer rating is the best by a QB in NFL history on the road over a two-season span (min. 300 attempts).

A look at the top two-season passer ratings on the road in league annals:

Quarterback, Road Passer Rating

  • 1. Aaron Rodgers, GB, 2011-12, 116.2
  • 2. Peyton Manning, IND, 2004-05, 115.3
  • 3. Tom Brady, NE, 2006-07, 114.3

And that is only a small smattering of the cool info inside of this week's DOPE SHEET

If you're tight on time, start on page 6 and see how far you make it before you crack a smile of pride, Packer Fans. We are the luckiest fans on the planet

Thanks JJSD

We die hard fans who had to endure the 70's and 80's paid our dues! We deserve this team we have now.  Yeah, I'll bitch when the Packers do not play well, but I love the Green and Gold, and we have a damn good head coach and GM !  We are fortunate and I am spoiled, but I deserve to be spoiled.  Can't wait for tomorrow folks.  It's goin' to be a long freakin day today!

That play....That was when I knew..... they were not going to be denied. They were going to win their last game of the season. I still get chills every time I see it.

McCarren is great there...."They don't turn the ball over Wayne." {chuckles} Then Wayne..."Matty Ice meet Tramon Williams!"

Completely priceless & I will always cherish that season

Great thread.  Henry, you just can't truly appreciate WEVR unless you're listening to a high school basketball game.  Pure broadcasting gold.  Luckily, we were able to get the games on TV as a kid, albeit they were rather snowy.  I'll always remember when my dad would make either myself or one of my brothers stand and hold the rabbit ears at a certain position because we might get better reception.

Ah, I remember being the antenna.  Wrapped in copious amounts of tinfoil with the hopes of pulling in a Eau Claire station.  Ended up listening to WEVR on the tractor radio because that was always the best reception.

Agreed.  That's been the number one factor in the past 21 years.  Just 2 losing seasons since '91.  I started watching the Pack in '78 so I only saw 3 winning seasons before '92.

Never thought I'd watch the Pack go on a 19 game win streak like they did in '10/'11.  It was so great a feat that it may be something I'll never see again from the Pack.
