What I'm hoping to hear before the start of the 2013 season:

Bulaga and Sherrod are healthy, as are Perry and Bishop.

"With the 25th pick in the first round, the Green Bay Packers select Montee Ball from the University of Wisconsin."

Ball is a pipe dream, and I'm sure I'll get ripped on this, too, but he seems like a guy that would fit in very well in our backfield. Strong, good speed and vision, he holds on to the ball, and he's used to the cold weather he'd see late in the season.
GB doesn't need a RB as much as they need a C and probably another G. They should be good at T with Bulaga, Sherrod and Newhouse.

I want to see a big time MLB in the draft... I could go for a S too and another big fat DT.

If it were up to me and I could snap my fingers to make our needs meet BPA in R1, I'd either take a C or a MLB... probably a MLB.

What about a MLB in the first, and take Ball in the second if he falls? He was projected as a third round pick last year before announcing he'd go back to Wisconsin.

The Packers do need a good running back. Too often on third and short, it's John Kuhn running into the pile for a yard, or a pass falling incomplete. Some offensive balance with a running back that can consistently get the short yards would go a long way in helping Aaron Rodgers. The threat of a real running back, and not just a backfield by committee, might help slow down the blitz.

Adrian Peterson's 40 yard dash has been clocked at 4.38.
Montee Ball's 40 yard dash has been clocked at 4.44.

Not a huge difference. If you watched the Big Ten Championship, Ball brought it. I have to admit, I was shocked by how fast he was.

Speed running around the corner at 2:06.
3:35 Nice spin move, and a stiff arm, to break a long touchdown run.

If he's there in the second round, the Packers should seriously consider him. My only concern is the number of carries he had at Wisconsin.
Again, I am not saying I agree with the critics that he lacks decent speed but he will drop somewhat because of it.

If I had to guess he'll probably be chosen late 2nd round or early 3rd round. I'd love if he ended up in GB.

Like what I saw in Harris but Starks is just a guy, Grant isn't a long term option, and Alex Green IMO is a change of pace dude. Ball could be that every down back they've been missing since Ahman Green.
Something to consider

Adrian Peterson (I think) was clocked in the low 4.3s when he was drafted. Don't know if he's dropped off somewhat but when I watch both backs AD seems to have more breakaway speed

Ball seems like more of a 4.5 guy to me and again, I still think that's plenty fast to play well in the pros. It's his other skills, like footwork, agility, balance, vision, etc that should translate well over to the NFL

trade out of the first, draft as many guys as possible in the second round.

first round picks suck

So we get guys like Pat Lee, Brian Brohm, WR Murphy (neck injury), S Nick Collins (neck inury), and Jerell Worthy? They were all second rounders.

The fact is, in any round guys who don't make it either because they can't adapt to the pro game, or because they are injured can be found.

(And people who think Ross Verba was the ****.q, too.)

The Giants tried to make Dayne the bruiser, which was not really his game in college. He could run between the tackles, and he had some power for sure, but he was more than just a north-south runner at 5'10 250 lbs. I don't know if he was used incorrectly, that might be overstating it, but I don't think he fit the Giants run scheme at all.

In his last two years in the NFL, at Houston, he was a much more effective runner. He averaged 3.5 ypc as a Giant, and upped that to 4.0 as a Texan, a very respectable average.

2006: 151 carries for 612 yards and 5 TD
2007: 194 carries for 773 yards and 6 TD. 13 games, 8 starts.

Not the second coming of Barry Sanders, but pretty solid based on the # of carries he got. We'd take that type of production in Green Bay in a heartbeat.

As much as I loved the Great Dayne, I never thought he was going to be a star in the NFL. A good back? Yes, but not a perennial Pro Bowler. A big part of that might have been the lack of speed. I can't vouch for the accuracy, but when I've looked up his 40 time, I've seen it listed at 4.74. If I remember correctly, he didn't do the combine.

Montee Ball I think is a different runner altogether. I think he could be absolutely be a star. He doesn't have the stop on a dime and change direction ability of a Barry Sanders or Adrian Peterson, but he's elusive.

I've been watching him very closely for the last two years, and the thing that most impresses me about his game is his patience. He will wait for a hole to open, and then he hits it hard. And his vision is fantastic.

Plus, we all know he's got a knack for the end zone. I'd love him in the late second round if we had multiple picks, or early in the third.

RB is pretty low on the list of needs for this team.

I do think that Harris has some really nice upside, but he's not the every down back that this team desperately needs. This is one area where we'll very much disagree. I do think that a running back is a big time need.

The Packers have really struggled converting third and short recently. Part of that are the injuries that have decimated the line. But not having that dynamic halfback is also a big reason for it. If we're not throwing for it, we're putting John Kuhn in. Ball is very good at reading defenses, and making quick adjustments at the line. Get a ball type runner, and the rushing attack immediately improves (to what extent also relies on the line's health). And doing that slows the blitz, which helps Aaron.
Dayne and Ball were products of the system that Wisconsin runs = pound the ball down your throat. I'm a Badger fan from way back but I don't think Ball would find much success behind GBs O line. I think if GB is going to invest in an RB they would be better served finding a Bettis , Riggins bowling ball type back who could pound out short yardage even when the holes were not there.
I think Benson can be our short yardage back. It's too bad he got blown up when he did as he seemed to be getting comfortable with the system GB runs. Sure I would be happy with an AP type back but GBs O doesn't need a back akin to that to find success.
Getting our two OTs back and maybe a mauler C can do nothing but help GBs run production IMO.
Defenses have found ways to at least slow down the Packer passing game, and the offense, for a variety of reasons, was not as good as it was last year, or in 2010. A good running back might cut down on some of those 3 and outs, and help the defense by giving them a breather.

With a prototypical runner, maybe McCarthy is more likely to stick with the run more. Maybe. But a second way for the Packers to beat teams can't be bad.
If Starks can get his ass on the field in 2013, keep him. If not, goodbye. Since the Super Bowl, he's played 19 of 32 games, and has only started 4. He could have all the talent in the world, but if he can't stay healthy, he's of no use to this team.

Harris has some upside, but if we go into next season with a 31 year old Cedric Benson, Harris and Alex Green as our three halfbacks, I'll be very disappointed. We need to upgrade the position.
Road grader at C. Starting OL of Sherrod, Lang, Mauler, Sitton and Bulaga with Barclay, Newhouse, and EDS backing them up. Need a C with a mean streak.

ILB with speed. Game is too fast for Hawk now.

Safety that can support the run better than what's in place today. that guy might be Sean Richardson.

Need Perry back. Really need Bishop back.

I think GB is in good shape at RB. The OL needs to be improved.

GB will compete for the Lombardi for the next 5 years as long as AR stays healthy.
