Not this sheet again.  Really?  Aaron Rodgers!  5-17 in games decided by 4 pts!  Not Clutch!  Can't win the close ones!

Hell it was so bad this morning, that teasing the commercial before the Packer/Bengal highlights this AM on Sportscenter they LITERALLY said the following:

"The Packers trailing in the 4th hand the ball to Aaron Rodgers.  We'll show you why that may not have been the right decision when we get back."

I literally have started hating sports.  I can't deal any longer with the insane, ludicrous, "how can I outderp the other guy" HOTSPORTSTAKES that dominate the TV and radio every single day.

But, so that Packer fans are armed with data, I will once again address this insanity.

First off - 4 pts.  Why 4 points?  Why not 3?  Not not 6?  Was there some meeting where it was universally decided that close games would now be considered as a 4 point spread?   I mean, this couldn't have anything to do with supporting the narrative intended, could it?

Let's secondly address the 5-17 record just year by year.

2008: 0-7

2009: 0-1

2010: 2-5 (of course the idiots at ESPN count the Det game as a loss to Rodgers here)

2011: 1-0

2012: 2-3

2013: 0-1

So, 5-17.  Started 0-8.  0-7 in his first year as a starter.  Was 2-5 in the year we won the freaking Super Bowl bringing this "record" to 2-13 his first 3 years. That included a Super Bowl win.  Let's not look at 3-4 over the past 2+ seasons though.  BUT HE'S 5-17 IN CLOSE GAMES.  GB SHOULD PUT IN BACKUP IN 4TH QUARTER OF ANY CLOSE GAMES!!!!

So, it's a random stat to begin with.  4 pts is a random number to chose.  And, of the "17 losses in close games", 13 were in the first 3 years. A year in which GB won the Super Bowl.  Rodgers was the SB MVP, and had arguably one of the best post seasons ever.  So, that's the raw data that equates to = can't win close games.

Now, shall we look a big deeper at these "close games"?  LET'S!

2008

Week 5 loss to Atlanta.  Rodgers didn't play great to be frank.  That said, he led a TD to tie the game up early in the 4th.  Threw a pick though.  Not a great game in the 4th from him.

Week 9 loss to Tennessee.  Rodgers led the team to tying FG in the 4th on the road against an undefeated Ten.  Never touched the ball in OT.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 10 loss to Minny.  After leading the team to a 6 pt lead in the 4th, the defense allows Minny to drive for go ahead TD with under 2 to play.  Rodgers leads team to FG position, Crosby shanks a makeable 52 yard FG indoors.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 13 loss to Carolina.  Rodgers leads team to go ahead FG with under 2 to play.  Carolina scores go ahead TD in 2 plays.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 14 loss to Houston.  Rodgers ties game up late in 4th with a TD pass.  After pinning the Texans on their own 3 yard line with under 2 to play, the defense allows Houston to march down field for GW FG.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 15 loss to Jax.  Rodgers leads team to go ahead FG late in 4th.  Defense allows Jax GW TD.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 16 loss to Chicago.  Rodgers extends lead to 7 early in 4th.  Bears tie it up late after yet another defensive collapse.  Rodgers leads team to last second FG attempt of 38 yards to win game.  Blocked.  Never touches ball in OT.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

2009

Week 15 loss to Pitt.  Rodgers leads team to 3 TDs in the 4th quarter, including a 2 pt conversion with 2 left in game.  Defense collapses 3 times, including a TD on the last play of the game.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

2010

Week 3 loss to Chicago.  18 penalty game.  Tie game in 4th, Rodgers has team at midfield of tie game with 2 to go.  Jones fumbles.  44 yard PI call.  Bears win on GW FG.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 5 loss to Washington.  No one played that well. That said, defense allowed 10 pts in 4th, and again, Rodgers led team to GW FG as time expired, and Crosby his the goalpost.  Bad INT in OT.

Week 6 loss to Miami.  Horrible game by everyone.  Ugh.  BUT, Rodgers throws a TD as times expires to tie the game and send it to OT.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 12 loss to Atl.  Rodgers TD pass with 50 seconds left ties game.  ST allows Atl to start at midfield.  Lose game on last second FG.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 14 loss to Det.  Rodgers gets knocked out with concussion.  Doesn't play 2nd half, yet this "counts".  WHATEVER.

2011

None

2012

Week 3 loss to Sea.  Fail Mary game.  Are you effing kidding me?  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 5 loss to Indy.  Defensive craps bed all 2H.  Rodgers leads team to go ahead TD with 5 to go.  Defense can't stop them.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

Week 17 loss to Minny.  Defensive craps bed all game.  Rodgers throws 4 TDs, 0 INTs, leads team to 10 points in 4th.  Anyone trying to imply that Rodgers "lost" this close game is insanely stupid.

2013

Week 3 loss to Cin.  Rodgers worst game as a pro.  No question about it.  Still, team had a 16 pt lead in 2H and allowed two huge drives by Cincy.  Insane playcalling, a fumble returned for TD.  But, yeah, Rodgers sucked.

So, of this "ZOMG HE CAN'T WIN CLOSE GAMES"  I see 3, maybe 4 where I can legitimately say that Rodgers played a significant part in the loss.

Oh well, back to your narrative ESPN you morons.

You knew the world of GBP football would be buried in an avalanche of stupidity this morning, and yes, BSPN has decided that Timmy Tebow can't even get a sniff at a 3rd string job, one of the narratives they're going to bring out of mothballs is that AR isn't clutch.

At least be creative before sending your sock puppets out there to bray this like jackasses.  Don't just trot out the same moronic meme you pushed a few years ago.

What's next?  Peyton Manning can't win the big one?

The good news is that this is a good litmus test for general stupidity.  Those that want to buy into this = dumdums who really don't need to be taken seriously going forward.

I think part of the issue has been a less than stellar offensive line over the years that gets exposed when you are forced to go 1 dimensional.   When the Pack is down and time is running out, you know darn well D-Line's are going full bore after Rodgers and ignoring the run.  The O-line's in the past few years haven't handled it well and it's translated into the Pack not being strong in those situations including making Rodgers look human.

In the games where the O-Line is able to handle the other team, the Pack usually wins as Rodgers is comfortable and able to perform normally.   When the Pack is down, there's usually a number of reasons they're down and the offensive line getting whipped is often one of those reasons.  As others have pointed out, there's a bunch of other reasons the Pack has failed whether it's missed Crosby FGs or defensive collapses as well.

Another viewpoint.

Since AR has taken over, the Packers have gone 59-32 including playoffs.

Of those 32 losses, 7 were by double digits.

Of those 32 losses, 3 were by more than 2 touchdowns.

Of those 32 losses, 24 were by 8 points or less.  (TD + 2 pt conversion)

One could look at this and say "Holy crap, those Packers under Rodgers, even with a trainwreck of a defense many times, even with so many injuries, even with playing 1st place schedules multiple times - they have been in almost every single game.  They've been legitimately blown out 2, maybe 3 times.  Damn, that's great stuff by AR and this team.

Yet, another chooses to look at a .650 winning percentage, a Super Bowl win, and being within one score of 75% of your losses and decides to craft a narrative that Aaron Rodgers isn't clutch.

[insert removed red word] ESPN and their ilk that decided that because Green Bay under Aaron Rodgers is in almost every game = not clutch because some of those losses were "close".

Look, I want to be clear, I'm not hero worshipping here like we saw under the previous guy.  AR sucked yesterday.  AR has not played well against the Giants for whatever reason.  AR isn't perfect.  But, if you want to criticize him, bring something better than highlighting he isn't clutch after throwing a last minute TD only to see the ST and D piss it away within minutes.  Bring something better than Rodgers bringing the team to attempt a GW FG that Crosby chokes 3 times (min, chi, was).  All while conveniently ignoring that a better argument could be made that AR has kept this team in almost every single game he's played, much of it dealing with injuries and a defense that was at best "limited".

I think Aaron should derp it up more often so he can come back in the 4th quarter. Makes total sense.

The guy is the highest rated QB in NFL history, both in the regular season and postseason. He's been league MVP, Super Bowl MVP, had the highest single season passer rating in history, the best interception rate in history, yet some people with an agenda will always find something to harp about.

"He's not clutch"...

Riiiiight.

You can also place a lot of this crapola on the guy who started it all:

How many years did we hear ad nauseam how TOG was ZOMG!! the greatest 4th Q comeback QB ever! over and over and over by TOG's #1 gobslobber for how many years? Nevermind that Madden almost never credited any WR for hauling in his heave ho's or that many occurred early in his career when guys like Reggie White and Fritz were around and bailed him out of boneheaded INT's to put GB behind only to force TOG to have to make a comeback.

Packers keeps one of the youngest teams in the league since Ted Thompson has been GM. That youth probably has as much to do with crunch time comebacks as anything. Sundays last offensive series ended with a rookie LT not getting his man out of the passing lane and before that a 2nd year RT failed to get his man out of the passing lane.  A more experienced player may have known what to do and how to get his man down. But the thing is these guys are learning in the season and by the end of November and December should be playing their best ball. It wasnt entirely Rodgers fault on that last drive even though he should have recognized the Bengals had stopped rushing and started jumping up to block passes.

McCarthys play calling on last drives usually have a lot to be desired to. Sometimes in stead of keeping the chains moving he goes for the bomb putting the team in 2nd or 3rd and long. And God knows when it is fourth and one he has only three plays. Kuhn or a RB diving into a jumbled mess or a 40 yard sideline bomb to Jordy.

Rodgers' record fell to 3-19 in games when the Packers trailed by 1-8 points in the fourth quarter and had at least one possession. Why can't this team win in the fourth quarter? They certainly have the talent. Can you really say it's the players and not play callers?

The Packers lost in San Francisco after Aaron Rodgers rallied the Packers to a 28-24 lead, which would've qualified as a fourth-quarter comeback if the defense had held that lead... because all of the plays that were called were bad? Do you really believe that, or does it just make you feel better to blame defeat on the plays that were called? Assigning blame is cathartic following a painful loss, and coaches are easy targets. Why can't they win in the fourth quarter? Well, they won in the fourth quarter in Detroit last season because Rodgers rallied the Packers and threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Randall Cobb. They lost in the fourth quarter in Minnesota after Rodgers had tied the game with a touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson because they couldn't stop Adrian Peterson. They lost in the fourth quarter in Seattle because the officials were incompetent. They rallied in the fourth quarter to beat New Orleans because Rodgers rallied the Packers to victory by throwing a game-winning touchdown pass to Nelson. They lost in the fourth quarter in Indianapolis because the defense couldn't hold a lead Rodgers had given them on a touchdown pass to James Jones. I think Rodgers' record is being unfairly misrepresented by media critics that aren't telling the whole story, and I'm disappointed to see Packers fans participate in this senseless harangue."

The last line says it all, Its a senseless harangue and quite honestly, any fan who repeats it is a mother****ing idiot. Its classic BSPN bull**** and any fan dumb enough to fall for it should be beaten mercilessly AND shot in the face

Pastrami on rye please.

This is such an epic thread filled with facts. Thanks much CA95 for starting it.

There's no shortage of Bob from Boulders that post here. GBfanforlife is spot on. Any GB fan that blathers on about AR not being clutch or GB failing in close games needs to have a huge wad of perspective packed up their ass with a 4x4. This team ain't perfect but it's closer than most. Things could be much, much, much, much worse.

Get on board or STFU.

Skip Bayless thinks exactly what you'd expect him to think.  He has HOTSPORTSTAKES.

He has the data to support his narrative.  He has no context.  He has no ability to look at the details behind the numbers the research peon gives him.  5-17!  5-24 in games down 1-8 in the 4th!  Context doesn't matter when you have a narrative to prop up.

Peyton and the Broncos are the story that ESPN wants to promote.  They need to tear down Rodgers to help make the sheep believe this.  Hence, AR is aloof, he yells at teammates, he's not a good leader, and he can't win in the 4th.

The reality behind any of those (every pro athlete is an egomaniac, every great QB has been seen yelling at teammates, two pissed off WRs that didn't get what they wanted are saying negative things how shocking, and the context of those 4th quarter stats) don't matter.  What matters is yelling your HOTSPORTSTAKES as loudly as possible.

But, trust me, Skip says EXACTLY what you'd expect him to say.  Ignore it.

Katz Deli Pastrami on rye please.

As usual, great post CAPackFan95.

Swear to god I said it during the game "Rodgers isn't clutch" thinking that's all I'm going to see this week.

Which is why I didn't turn on any football related shows since Sundays loss

I actually heard one of the eye dee ten tee experts say something to the effect of:

there are a lot of factors that go into Rodger's late game record - like missed FGs and the defense giving up the lead, but at some point you have to look at the QB

spit my coffee all over my dash

Speaking of numbers. Listening to Wilde's interview with AR today...

Take the Packers and the over next week against Detroit. This team has a festering scent of "we're going to shove soft up your @ss" to it. AR may come off as a prick the rest of the year but he seems hard wired to win another SB.

I agree Chillijon. all those complaining about Rodgers' attitude need to remember that's why we won in 2010. And I don't blame him for being pissed at MM's red zone play calls last Sunday. They were a big part of why we got six points from two trips to the five yard line.
