Gard is accountable for the lack of development of their Gs.

Gard is accountable for the poor Free Throw shooting.

And what we thought was a better team is right back where they were last year.

They play good defense, but their offense is going to be a struggle in the Big 10.

And they may be at a point where they have to take their best player out down the stretches of games because he is such a terrible FT shooter.

But he isn’t alone... The team is shooting 69% as a team, ranked 192nd in FT %. It’s been a problem for a long time.

I was starting to believe that Gard had the guys back on point... but I see the same team as last year. The loss to Marquette was more of last year’s play. The loss this weekend... now this one... they’re really going to struggle to score points in the B1G, and that because they just aren’t getting better at the little things. Simple entry passes- unless it’s Happ, everyone’s afraid to throw it. Their Gs panic under pressure. Davison can’t shoot- maybe it’s post surgical, maybe its mental. Trice was lights out- now teams are keying on him. Kobe King does not look like the elite scorer that he was supposed to be. He’s hesitant, and that makes his shot off. Iverson has not gotten better in 4 years in the program.

Anyone who has played basketball knows what it feels like to try to be yourself when your uncomfortable with the scheme- it makes really good players average.

If im a recruiter not at WI, every kid that’s any good at G and being recruited by Gard will get a before and after tape of Kobe King. I’d tell them β€œThis is what will happen to you at WI”.

ANd we wonder why these elite scorers in Milwaukee, Racine, up north... why do they leave WI? This is why. The system strangles scorers until they look like they forgot how to play basketball.

Well at least I got my question from last week answered, which was, β€œWhy doesn’t this team follow their shots or crash the boards on offense?”

As the announcers pointed out tonight, Gard wants them back on defense, on the predication that this team is hard to score on when the defense is set.

That makes sense, I guess the problem with that approach being, 1) It requires your shooters to be red-hot at all times, and 2) You still have to, you know, play good defense. Tonight in the first half, they couldn’t hit squat with the ball, then got caught flat-footed and watching the ball a number of times on defense.

Not. Good.

Not saying I could do better, but Gard needs to get his system working pronto. That’s 2 sloppy performances in a row. That’s on the coach.

As a Badger fan, I'm afraid that the defining moment of Gard's tenure at UW will turn out to be when Calipari flipped Tyler Herro to Kentucky. Herro just won national freshman player of the week honors and is exactly the type of player the Badgers don't have - a guy who can create his own shot and score. Happ would be a great #2 guy on a great team, but teams have figured out how to guard this team which is to run guys at Happ to make his passes from the post more difficult and then make sure that Trice or Pritzl don't get comfortable looks. The Gophers were more than happy to let Reuvers, Davison, Ford, or King shoot from 3.

I agree with Music City. The team is filled with guys who look scared to shoot. When Reuvers, Davison, Ford, King, etc. catch the ball you can see in their body language they have no confidence whatsoever.

An even bigger concern is that when Happ goes to the bench, the offense consists of the guards passing the ball outside the three point line and then the last guy with the ball ends up taking a contested 3 at the end of the shot clock. It looks like they have no idea what do if they can't get the ball into Happ in the post.

There is not much lined up in terms of potential freshman contributors for next year. This could get really ugly really fast the next few years.

Which forwards on this team can you count on for anything?  Ford? THomas? IVerson? Ruevers?  Which guards? 34? Trice? PPritzl?  I'll give you Trice, 34 and maybe IVerson as good players but they can be invisible all too often.

In truth, the only guy you can count on is Happ and that is for 38 minutes (free throws)  only.

In the s cond half last night they (actually Happ) looked pretty good, he got the rebound , brought it up, either started the O or took it himself or played great D, stole the ball and scored.  Note, no one else did anything in that 8 minute stretch.

A lot of JAGS on this team.

They have Ethan Happ and a bunch of Zach Showalter/Bruesewitz/Ryan Evans types. Ethan Happ isn't as good as Jon Leuer, Kaminsky, Dekker, Butch, etc. but he's a good European player. The Bruesewitz types are great if they are your 5th or 6th best players, but you get into trouble when they are your 2nd or 3rd best players. Trice is a potential exception, but a 5'11" guy who isn't exceptionally quick is going to struggle with physical defense in the Big 10.

It’s the system... it strangles scoring Gs and puts so much pressure on them to be perfect they are scared to play. Big men thrive on this team- but unless the guard player matches, they’re a bad team and they won’t do what we are used to seeing.

Who gets better? I mean, that’s what was great about Ryan. Guys always left better than they were when they arrived. The system wasn’t great, but guys got better so the success was there. This is Bo Ryan without the coaching and development.

They give Gard another year and this program is Steve Yoder level again... NIT will be a thrill. That’s not good enough... not anymore.

Even with yesterday's s*!tshow, I think this team turns it around and gets to the tourney.  Gard is no Bo, but other than Izzo, Coach K, Bill Self, Roy Williams, is there anyone currently coaching that can even think about being at Bo's level?  Maybe Tony Bennett gets there someday, but he's got a long ways to go to even sniff what Bo did.

Tony Bennett gets there some day? Tony is 49 years old and the main blemish on his record is the 1-16 upset last year. He doesn't get the one and dones like Duke or UNC but he seems to beat them almost every year. He's won 3 ACC titles in the last 5 years and is 12-0 right now. He's been to the Elite 8 and the Sweet 16. He hasn't been the Final 4 yet, but Bo didn't get there until his last two years. He has recruited and coached two college players (Malcolm Brogdon and Klay Thompson) that are better NBA players than anyone Bo has produced. Bo's best player in the NBA was Devin Harris.

Tony is 231-86 at Washington State and Virginia (72.9%). Bo was 394-157 at Milwaukee and Wisconsin  (71.5%).

If the Badgers can get Tony Bennett, they should jump at the chance.

The Badgers are 10-4 right now and 2-1 in the conference. Realistically I think they have to be at least 10-8 in conference which would make them 18-11 before the Big 10 tournament. The Big 10 is pretty decent this year. That's going to be at top hill to climb. It all depends on whether Davison, Reuvers, King, and Ford can hit outside shots. Teams are not going to let Happ or Trice beat them.

Most should, he ain't leaving UVA.  His wife is from there and it is at the very least as good of a job as is UW.
