That isn't the only scenario you want your backup QB to be able to take care of. Rodgers has already had a couple concussions in his career and with the new protocol, if he gets dinged again, you need a guy who basically won't lose 3 games in a row for you while your starter sits out. If we had a better D maybe a guy like Harrell could get by but we don't have that luxury. At least it appears that way right now.

Not to use the Bears as a great comparison but Hanie killed their playoff hopes last year after a strong start with Cutler.

I think the whole present day concussion issue makes backup QB a much more critical spot for every team than in years past.

Solid post!

Flynn looked a lot better than this in previous preseason games playing with scrub players

No doubt! Harrell is Brian Brohm all over again. Time to move along.

Yup, after seeing that they spent significant money on Jason Campbell in FA. Pretty solid back-up QB.

Give Harrell some time with the one's against Cincy, and then fish or cut bait.
I really dont care who the backup QB is...unless it would be Brady or Brees. Big Grin

This team needs Rodgers healthy to win....to go to the playoffs. Otherwise, they are a .500 team at best. Rodgers covers up a lot of holes, starting with the running game and a defense that gave up a lot of yards (granted, a lot of those last year were when the game was already decided).

I would argue that no team needs a player like the Packers do Rodgers.

While I agree that Harrell hasn't been impressive, there really isnt anyone out there that would be much better. I would trade a 6th or 7th to get Colt McCoy, but even if he were pressed into action for the Packers, I still dont think they make the playoffs.
Landing someone like McCoy would help in future years, but I don't see any vet QB coming in and learning MM's offense for 2012. Not that McCoy would be worse than Harrell in 2012, but I doubt that he would be much of an upgrade.

At this point I think we pretty much know what Harrell is, and with the #1's probably playing a good chunk of next weeks game, Harrell's running out of time to impress. Rather than watching more of the same from Harrell, I'd just as soon see Coleman get a bigger workload to see how he responds.
Most of the names I've seen tossed around are currently back-ups on other teams... why would a team cut or trade their back-up QB? An interesting name is Hsaselbeck, but he'd be expensive in a trade because of his contract. Plus, I don't see TEN getting rid of him.

Because some of these guys are battling to be #2 and will lose, and then those teams don't want a disgruntled/expensive vet as #3, prefer cheaper/developmental type -- if they even keep a #3. So in Cleveland, behind starter Weeden, if McCoy loses out to Wallace, he becomes available. Same in Seattle, where Flynn and rookie Wilson are both ahead of Jackson.

And that is why TT won't trade to get a #2 QB. He'll just wait until some one is released and then pounce. Most of those types will want the posibility of a ring and will go to the Packers if asked over some other team unless they go a starter because some teams #1 QB was knocked out for the season during the last pre-season game.

I can see from these highlights the guy has a very strong arm and true running ability. And he's started a bunch of games. I'll take all that over Harrell in a minute.

Russell Wilson looks like the real deal for Seattle. He threw well, had energy and looked very confident vs the Broncos.

Matt Flynn did alright. But from what I saw last night, Wilson will be playing regularly somewhere soon.
Like the guy at packer update said, he (jackson) has only ever been surrounded by crap too as far as offenses and coaching staffs go. If TT brought him in, I'd trust TT and MM in what they might see in him. If there is anything for them to see. If nothing else, they could bust him down and rebuild him to greater value. They could "flip" him.
Doug Pederson?

He was on Miami's 1993 roster for 7 games. GB picked him up 1996. He appeared in 1 game in each of the 1996 & 1997 seasons, but didn't throw any passes. In 1998 he threw 24 passes completing 14 of them for 128 yards and 2 TDs with 0 INTs. Good enough for a 100.7 rating. His contract was up that year and he wanted a chance to start. The Eagles were willing to give him that chance and he started 9 games winning 2 in 1999. In 2000 the Browns gave him a chance to start - but could only muster 1 win in 8 tries. In 2001 he was back with the Pack for 4 years as the trusted veteran backup.
Rick Mirer was another. Turned him into a draft pick, too.

As for Flynn, Hass got benched once or twice after he went to Seattle. Was replaced by Trent Dilfer. I think Flynn will be fine even if he struggles at first.
TJack is a tough call (for me,anyway).
I've never thought he was the second coming of Randall Cunningham, but I think he indeed has some skills. Granted it was, 1. The Vikings, 2. Several years ago, and, 3. Preseason, but he was--by far--playing the best of any of their QB's. He was making completions, running for 1st downs, and looking like a real-life NFL QB. Of course, once the regular season started, he wasn't seen or heard from again.
I doubt Seattle has done him any favors, other than paying him way more than he's worth. In spite of what he may have been told, he wasn't going to have a realistic chance to start, barring injury. It wouldn't surprise me if this was the same case in Minnesota; it surely was after the arrival of Lord Byron.
The biggest downside, to me, is he's languished on the league for so long, that he may not ever be able to develop as he would've, say, 5 years ago. IOW, when is the last time a 7-8 year career back-up QB all of a sudden blossomed into a star?
The biggest upside is that he may be a QB who could sustain some drives by running for 1st downs in the event of pocket collapse. And he should be able to beat a weaker team given the weapons we have at WR and TE.

I realize all this is just a lot of assumption and speculation, but the point is that he's not as far-fetched a choice as most might think. He may not be any better than anybody else that's "assumed" to be available, but he's not the worst either.

I cut Jackson some slack because he has had terrible coaching his entire career and a terrible OLine. However, Jackson seems to struggle with some very basic things like reading a defense. Those are things I think he could have gotten a really good QB coach in the offseason, like a lot of QBs do, and improved. He's fine on the timing passes and can buy time with his legs, but ask him to stand in the pocket, read the coverage and make the right choice and he is garbage.

If I'm watching any situation for a back-up, it's going to be San Francisco. Josh Johnson is most likely going to be the odd man out and he has shown more potential as a passer than Jackson.

I would be VERY surprised if they bring anyone in if Aaron can still play though. They will either go with 3 QBs or cut Harrell. I don't think they will risk losing Coleman even though he has had some rough moments, I get the feeling they like his potential a lot.

Harrell with a really nice throw over coverage vs. No. 1 defense. Then completes another.

Harrell heating up. Hits Boykin on an out.

Uh-oh... Ol' rag arm lighting up the #1 DEF.

No disrespect intended to GH, but I find it curious that guys like him disappear after their NFL 'career', but guys like TJoke or Ryan Fitzpatrick hang around forever?

Is his suck that bad? Or is it because he's given up? Or just doesn't give a damn?

In any case, it does make one wonder just what the going rate for a High School OC is?

He'll probably have to "teach" a class or two.  If it's a private school, then there's a bit more LEE-way into what he is allowed to teach (and of course, more "private" donations to his salary).  Here's a sample schedule:

Period 1:  prep period

Period 2:  prep period

Period 3:  "Football 101" (for incoming freshman boys only)

Period 4:  "Introduction to the Game of Football"  (limited to Senior Co-Eds only)

(enrollment preference given to girls 18 years or older)

LUNCH

Period 5:  "Weight-Lifting"   (must be on the varsity football roster)

Period 6:  "Film Study"  (limited to varsity offensive players only)

Period 7:  "Stretching/Calisthenics" (limited to varsity offensive players only)

PRACTICE

This type of job probably is at least $ix figures..since he would have to be a "teacher", too.

Midland Lee is public. The movie Friday Night Lights is abut one of their conference rivals Permian HS in Odessa. Oil/Gas and Football is all there is in that part of the state. They pay their coaches well and the few that teach have 1 maybe 2 class periods a day.

GH never started.  Both of those examples did.  That gives them more staying time.
