Rougher road ahead for Packers' Driver

An ongoing story in training camp will be Driver's chances to play a 14th year in Green Bay. He's 37, and with such talent behind him there is reason to think he might not make the 53-man roster.

Tom Clements, the first-year offensive coordinator, was asked if he knew that Driver would be on the club.

"I don't make the roster moves," said Clements. "But based on history I would anticipate that. We expect him to play like he did last year."

Even though this depth chart might be the hardest to crack in the league, neither Borel nor Gurley lacks confidence. In December, Borel declined an offer to join Tampa Bay's 53 just as Gurley turned down the same overture from Minnesota.

Both players were released at the end of camp after promising showings and immediately signed to the practice squad.

Borel, a quarterback at Utah State, is similar to Cobb in size and quickness.

"For never having played the position he improved tremendously during the year and he had a good spring," Clements said. "He has a chance."

Gurley isn't much further along, having given up his final two years at South Carolina. Last August, he carried 215 pounds on a 6-foot-4 frame. Today, he almost looks like a tight end at 232.

"I don't think he's too big," said Clements. "You like big receivers. He catches the ball well. He still needs to work on his route-running."

That Gurley's bulked up to almost TE weight is pretty interesting IMO and I'm guessing he didn't decide to do that without Packers coaches either telling him to or highly suggesting he did.

Finley: 6'5 247

Gurley: 6'4 232

Those are 2 nice Red Zone targets.

I'm having a hard time not seeing Gurley on the roster this season. His height/weight is impressive and his ST's play, especially blocking kicks, is said to be very good.

I'm sure Driver will make the roster but I wouldn't be shocked if he is sent on his way either.

Looking at the future, I'd have to think it will hard to let guys like Gurley and Borel go when you consider Driver and possibly Jennings might not be in GB after the season.
I just don't see how they cut Driver, this year. They renegotiate his contract, he's stayed in shape, and is a veteran, and is the heart and soul of the team. I really think if they were going to cut DD, out of respect, they would have released him, so he can latch on to another team.

I also don't see how Jennings would not be back next year, TT will get that done.

As for the kids, they are going to have to continue to be consistent, and it makes sense for Gurley to bulk up, so he can be a hybrid WR/TE. With Quarless gone at least through week 6, it wouldn't surprise me, that Gurley takes that spot, and give TT more time to figure out what to do.

I don't see that unless Jennings asks for a lot of coin or makes it known he wants to be the highest paid WR.

Remember his current contract was attractive to Jennings because of it's length. He's in his 2nd, will sign his third, and really could very well be up for a 4th. His current one allows him to re-sign at a young age and if TT does another 3-4 year one, he'd be up for yet another one at a relatively young age yet. And he is seeing how they are treating DD at age 37.

Add all that with the ability to play with the best QB in the NFL and surrounded by arguably the best WR corps in the NFL...that's a hell of a lot to walk away from.

Lastly, we had a guy here with "inside" information on X4 that Jennings would walk after his rookie deal and his wife wasn't happy in GB. We found out quickly how Rong that info was.
Has there ever been talk about moving Borel to RB? Is he a better 3rd down option over Saine? You can cover Saine with a LB out of the backfield. You can't do that with Borel. He's either creating a mismatch for himself or causing one somewhere else.

I agree that Cobb and Borel are pretty much the same guy. Aren't Saine and Green the same thing?

I'm making the assumption Starks and Green stay healthy. But I think the Packers have a better chance of hiding Saine on the PS. I don't think they can do that with Borel for another year.

that would be about as preposterous as having Kuhn takes snaps at tailback

More importantly, the chemistry between Rodgers and Jennings cannot be replaced. Jennings will be locked up to another extension

AJ Hawk doesn't have long in GB with all that money he's still due. Pack won't be paying that
