I think it's pretty obvious Harbaugh is just calling attention to is QB in a kind of pre-game working of the refs so he gets more calls in the game.  That's all it is.

If I had to, I would guess the refs will try to protect read-option QB's more than the rules specifically say.  If there is any "grey area" I see things tipping toward the Q.  It's an exciting and relatively new style of offense that I'm sure the NFL would love to see proliferate.  How many calls have we already seen going against defenders that seemed to have perfect form - within in the rules - tackles and hits that get flagged and fined.  Get used to it.  It's only the beginning of a greater tilt toward higher point totals.

Yea, the douchebag whiner is definitely trying to sway refs opinion before the game. Any game for that matter regarding letting his QB run with all the protection of a passing QB. Hope the refs see through his bitchy whining and allows the defence to play per the rules.

It's called "gamesmanship" and it's something many of the great ones like Phil Jackson have done for years. With read-option being so in vogue it's a smart move to get the refs thinking about it before the ball is even kicked off.

I remember 12 getting hit without penalty quite a bit early on and M3 did address it to some degree but I wonder if he could have been more direct. It took a Super Bowl and an MVP trophy before Rodgers started getting some of those ticky tack roughing calls that dominate the game now.

Harbaugh is scrambling because he has 2 options: run the RO and let his QB get hammered or switch to a Pro Style system and probably not be as successful. He's either going to take heat for letting his QB get hit even though the Packers said they were going to do it or he will take heat for losing. It was a brilliant move by the Packers to make their intentions known because there's a real chance they will at least run the RO less as to not open Kaeperdick up to the hits. Either way, this is another tally for the Packers in Satori's conspiracy theory.

Right.  Good luck with that.

Not kidding. I've never seen the cover of the NFL rule book but it wouldn't surprise me if it was this:

Lost in all the hoopla over just hitting the read option QB often and hard is how to actually defend it. To do that the outside linebackers and defensive ends cannot just blaze up field as they would for a drop back pass.

The OLB's and DE's need to stay along the line of scrimmage fanned out and confuse/force the read option QB to commit, then hit/tackle whoever gets/has the ball. If the QB does hand the ball off but fakes that he has it as well then the QB is also hit on the play (unless its like well after it's obvious he does not have the ball).

A good Wilde article today on it, based on the Wis Defensive coordinators trek up to GB this spring is linked.

How to defend the Read Option

QB play action fake to the RB and the RB get's drilled. QB read option to the RB and he breaks toward the DE without the ball and get's drilled. Player without the ball are identical and fare game.

Harbaugh will be sure to advise his defense to take the high road when Russell Wilson runs the read option next week in Seattle.

It's hard to blame Hairball, but when you hear constant bitching and whining from the same coach, it all becomes blather in the end.

MM should tell the refs to watch for the coaches stepping onto the field.

I predict the personal foul calls on defenders are going to be a clusterf***. Snap decisions made just because hits "look" bad, was the QB in or out of the pocket, was the defender leading with the crown of his helmet, or did he drive the QB into the ground...sheesh! And they're all judgment calls.

The best thing our guys can do is keep their heads up when making a hit. Even if they don't get a PF from the hit on the QB, they could get one for helmet contact or the aforementioned "continuing action" fouls. Control what you can, and pray the refs are at least consistent with their calls.

The better article on defending the RO, referenced in the Wilde article.

Ask Mike Vick about whether or not he's protected when running with the ball.  Kaepernick is a bigger dude but QBs are not set up to take a lot of hits.  I hope he does run a lot because over time he will wear down or get injured.  No team wants that but it is bound to happen if your QB runs a lot

Thought I'd find a 49ers forum similar to X4 and came upon this thread:  http://www.49erswebzone.com/fo...aep-injure-him-year/

That forum isn't very much like X4.

I never knew so many rabid types were so emboldened to embrace their inner-Harbaughiness in public.  Madness, I tell ya.....

I hope the NFL and their refs come to grips with the fact that a running QB is a ball carrier... ball carriers get hit.

I won't go so far as to say Harbaugh is a whiner or bitch or whatever.  He's obviously a very good coach with a track record of winning.  He's doing what anybody else would do... trying to get an edge for his team.

"I hope the NFL and their refs come to grips with the fact that a running QB is a ball carrier"

I wouldn't bet on it.. They are selling a product and right now they are marketing that product via offense and QB's in particular.

Agree about Harbaugh, he is doing what any coach should do.  Trying to gain an advantage to give his team the best chance to win.

I'm sure our defense loves hearing this stuff.

But.... Think the Niners defense isn’t going to try & “target” Rodgers???

C'mon JIM....

I agree. I don't think we'll see much if any RO. Kaepernick has been doing a great job with his 2nd & 3rd reads. I believe the Niner offense will be run much like the Packer offense, except they don't have the WR's to execute it.

This all comes down to stopping the Niners run game

McCarthy would be applauded here for doing the same thing.

All Harbaugh cares about is winning. He should have checked with the league on this when he first decided to run RO stuff and put his QB in jeopardy. And if the league said the QB is not exempt from being hit and he cared about his QB then he would have made him a Pro Style/scrambling QB. He waits till the last minute to check with the league only because Matthews said something. He's full of it, it doesn't deserve applause and it isn't gamesmanship, it's Harbaugh covering his a$$. He doesn't care about his QB getting hit or getting hurt, it's not like that have 100 million tied up in Kaep, he just doesn't want to take heat when he does get hurt. He can blame the refs or the NFL now if Kaep gets hurt.

Maybe.  The difference is that Jimmy is a raving, whiny bitch and MM isn't.  Can you imagine how Harbaugh would've reacted at the end of the Seattle game last year?

Oh yeah.  Two more differences.

McCarthy: NFL does good job on rules on hits. Continuous updates. We feel we have a strong understanding for game plan on Sunday

MM: "Three parts to the read option -- the QB, the dive, the pitch. The ability to tackle that player is within the rules."

It's up to the refs to not be worked and this sort of thing goes on in every sport. The problem is that the refs have such wide discretion on QB hits that almost anything can be called and often is. I just hope they manage to least maintain some consistency in the calls.

Plenty of people called Rodgers out for blowing a fuse last year in Detroit when MM used a challenge flag he shouldn't have.

Harbaugh can coach but his antics wouldn't get a free pass here by those same people. Plenty of coaches have managed to win and have success without behaving like a 3rd grader.

You're right...He'd be a "raving, lunatic, whiny bitch" if he was coaching the Packers

...who should be fired for every missed tackle and unscheduled injury.

Wait until we see that whiney bitch walking out on the field hissing and spitting. That picture will get me going for sure. I mean, using bad language towards the tv. Harbaugh is one of the most aggravating opposing coaches in the NFL.

Can hit a running QB in read option with or without the ball

Yep. And according to comments on that article, most fans agree.

So now Harbaugh not only looks like a whiner, but also an idiot for not knowing the rules regarding an offense he’s run for 1/2 a season….
