Radio said he is retiring. I think he should. Although I have no basis for saying this (I suppose his record there means something), it really seemed like his tenure in Cleveland was a mess. Didn't seem to ever really have a plan.

Many fans of other teams would have been happy with the Rhodes/Sherman era but I but many on here were not.
It's hard to imagine Holmgren being like Parcells; staying around football in some kind of capacity until he just got tired of the grind.
I would think he would have some demand as an analysist, and there seems to be plenty of those jobs around. And surely that would allow more 'home' time, something I imagine his family would like.

It is interesting to ponder what might have been had Holmy known that RW was on his way out. But I think you're probably right- all the evidence points to him being in Mike Sherman territory as a GM and things did work out for the best.

Holmgren has proven conclusively that he can't run a football team based on this and his time in Seattle. As a coach, he's one of the best out there, but his personnel moves were only a shade better than Mike Sherman's. This just further proves that being a great coach doesn't make you a great front office guy. It's not a lot different from the fact that being a great player doesn't make you a great coach. The Packers could have never paid Holmgren the kind of cash Allen gave him ($8 million a year was unheard of in 1999, even for having both jobs), but it was still a kick in the gut to see him go. We all tried to tell ourselves it would be OK with Rhodes, but deep down, I knew good things couldn't be on the horizon after hiring a 3-13 coach from the worst team in the NFL (which won 6 games the previous season). Thankfully, the third post-Holmgren coach has proven to be even better.

I think actually, his wife wanted to open a book store, and he was going to open a coffee shop either within in it or next to it. I can see that happening. He seems like a free spirit, not like a Bill Parcells?

He was a great coach, and did great things for GB.

How about on Holmgren Way?

Holmgren: No idea how DAL rumor got started

As the article points out, it was likely his agent. The part that caught my eye though was the last paragraph.

quote:

"The second thing is, I don't know, I honestly don't know what the future holds or what I want to do. Honestly. Believe me on that. Thirdly, I've always been, quite honestly, bothered by the speculation during the season when coaches are trying to work and they're fighting like crazy for their jobs, and I would never do that."
Don't worry about Holmgren ... Goodell already gave JJones his little gift in Payton.

With all the unanswered questions about the NFL's view of Payton's Saints contract, the writing is on the wall that Payton is headed to Dallas for Jones.

Lawyer Goodell brokered a deal that worked out for everyone except the Saints fans. Benson and Loomis got the pressure off of them, Payton can makeup lost income instead of a lawsuit and JJones gets the guy he wants.

All JMO.
I'd long since forgiven Holmgren for the way he left Green Bay, but he'll be right back near the top of my **** list if he decides to coach that team. I think a lot of Packers fans feel the same way. The guy cannot assemble a football team, but he's one of the best coaches out there.

His teams made the playoffs five years in a row in Seattle after the owner wised up and realized he sucks as a GM. His last season in 2008 sucked because they were decimated by injuries and they had terrible drafts after Thompson came to Green Bay.
Holmgren doesn't bother me. Helped bring a Championship to GB and also helped them become a consistent winning team. He's been gone for a while, no point in holding a grudge. I just won't root for his success in Dallas.

I don't hold a grudge against Ron Wolf for hiring Ray Rhodes, why hold a grudge against Mike?
Holmy can go to Dallas. I don't really care. He did well for us, probably cost us a SB, and is a far better coach than GM. As long as he doesn't beat us or win a SB, I'm good with him going to Dallas because he's

Even Holmy might have trouble coaching the guys Jerruh drafts.
if holmy can do for romo what holmy did for bert... but that's a lot of unlearning that romo would have to do. why anyone would want to hitch their wagon to that circus but, by all means, give it a go holmy. I'm buying stock in popcorn! Smiler
