We talk a lot about the Packer defense and what's wrong with it. I'll save that topic for another day.
It will be a challenge early in the 2025 season to be great on offense w/o Scoot/Christain Watson.
What are your thoughts on how to improve GBs offense in 2025.
Here are some things that I think will help improve the offense.
1. LOVE
Love stays healthy and improves his accuracy and maybe uses his legs a little more. I get that he was hurt this year and more of a pocket passer. Although I love when MLF rolls Jordan to his right. Rodgers ran for 369 yards one year. Love can definitely use his legs more a be a weapon that way. Fundamentals will improve his accuracy.
Love also needs help from better play calling and less dropped passes. GB dropped 33 passes, according to Jason Wilde. By comparison, Philly dropped 7, all year! Love seems to thrive when he lets it rip. At the end of last year it seemed as though the play calling was too conservative.
2. WRs
Improvement from all 4 of our top receivers. Many Packer receivers historically have improved big time in the third or fourth year. Adams, Jordy, Jennings and Driver are good examples. Less drops, more big plays and more consistency would help here. We need to add another receiver that can stretch the field. Tee Higgins seems to be a good choice. Then, when Watson comes back late in the year, we could potentially have two guys that can stretch the field. If our tight ends stay healthy, both Kraft and Musgrave could be huge contributors. It feels like Musgrave's speed is being wasted.
3. QB coach
Get the right QB coach. Tom Clements leaving hurts GB's O a little. I have heard Getsy, Tolzein, Sean Mannion and even Dan Orlovsky for possible replacements. The QB coach can help improve Jordan's fundamentals and hopefully that will up his accuracy.
4. MLF
Matt did not have his best year play calling. Should he remain the OC/play caller, I say yes, because I think he'll figure it out through watching film and some heavy critical thinking sessions with his offensive staff.
A popular opinion is MLF did not call enough plays from under center. I have read that Josh Jacobs PREFERS handoffs from the shotgun. Also when Love hurt his hand/elbow, under center snaps were not practical. The jury is still out on shotgun vs. under center. Mix it up is always best I guess.
We also need more explosive plays, especially in the run game. Our run game was very good, but Jacobs had zero runs over 40 yards and seven over 20 yards. More slants and screens seems reasonable too.
Better play calling in the red zone and on short yardage situations. Maybe the play calls are good and the execution is bad, who really knows. Too many times GB settled for FGs in the red zone.
5. Explosive plays
Green Bay was top five in the league in explosive plays with 134. That averages one per 7.66 plays. 12 yard runs are considered explosive and 16 yard passes are explosive by definition. The potential for more explosive plays in 2025 seems less with the Watson injury. It seems as though MLF was inconsistent calling slants and screens, which potentially can be explosive. Second year RB Marshawn Lloyd could help with the explosive plays, but he is coming off a hamstring injury.
6. Better run blocking
Yes we ran for almost 2500 yards in 2024, but great run blocking was not the reason. GB was 23rd in ESPN's run block win rate. Jacobs averaged only 2.0 yards before contact, ranking him 51st among all RBs. Jacobs was so good at breaking tackles and finished third in yards after contact. Jacobs had 529 yards before contact and 800 yards after contact. It seems as though the strength of our O line is pass blocking. Not sure if Jordan Howard's strength is run blocking or not, but he could help improve the O line overall.
7. Be better in the red zone and on third down.
Other than turnovers, football is decided by how you do in the redzone vs. how your opponent does in the red zone. Also, third down efficiency is essential to winning games. Green Bay must improve in both of these areas. Also, if you're like me, every third and one scared the hell out of me, even with Josh Jacobs in the backfield.
