It’s simply stupid not to play Allen. The Iowa defense doesn’t fear him. Why would they? He’s not a threat to go the distance every time he has the ball. But when Allen is there, a 4 yard run can turn into 75 with a single cut and a missed tackle. So if Melussi’s in the game, you actually thank them.

Mertz is trying to keep Iowa in the game. Almost a killer interception there on third down when he locked onto a guy early. The early down play calls by Chryst are designed to make sure Mertz doesn't screw something up. The last few drives have been like the late 1970s Packers: Run for a short gain, run a short gain, pass on 3rd and long, punt/kick.

Seems to me that PC called the first quarter to boost Mertz confidence. And it looked like it was working…he looked pretty good.  I almost fell for it.

I guess I can get fooled again.

7 incompletions in a row. A couple of those were good decisions to throw the ball away, but it makes it hard to run if there is no threat of a deep pass.

What should have been a knockout blow in the first half is now going to beat a potentially close game.
