Allen is clearly not close to 100%, showed no burst today. Mertz was terrible, just terrible
JL is the coach next year
Even if the TV crew doesn't know him for some random assistant coach

Fantastic effort from the defense, it just wasn't enough to overcome the woeful performance of the offense and special teams. I'll be really surprised if JL isn't coaching the team next year.
I too think he will be back and the final scores of the remaining games may not mean much. However I do think the teams posture and how they compete will matter. Limiting penalties and turnovers and tightening up the special teams are a few things that need to change.
In short, they need to be competitive look like a football team.
Below is a Facebook post by my 94-year-old step father in-law. Do I really have it in me to unfriend him? π
βThe Wisconsin Badgers really looked awful against Iowa today but their quarter back is sure showing improvement. If they only had ten more men like him. His passes are right on the mark. The badgers are trying somehow to extend his school years. I know that he will go in the first round in the draft. He probably will go in the top three. We sure can be proud of his abilities.β+
McIntosh needs to do whatβs best for the long term stability of the program. If JL isnβt the guy (and Iβm not sure he is) and they get some transfers as a result so be it. That includes Braelon Allen.
A decent head coach- and more importantly a decent recruiter - can make up a lot of ground in a short amount of time.
I know people like to romanticize about the local kid (Chryst) or former player (JL) but I think that can be dangerous because you can end up being too patient and forgiving. It would be one thing if those guys had a natty or even playoff appearance pedigree but they donβt. Itβs even worse that in a very mediocre Big Ten West itβs been years since they made the conference title game.
To me, Wisconsin had everything (yet) in front of them after Leonhard was named interim HC and theyβve had two brutal losses and a few wins against subpar competition. Worse yet, we see the same stupid mistakes and poor decisions and honestly this team isnβt good enough for them to keep beating themselves. I mean, think about it. Iowaβs only been able to beat them a few times over the last decade by sitting back and playing the waiting game (mistakes). And of course the Badgers and Mertz and special teams oblige. Itβs just not a disciplined program and hasnβt been for a while now.
Leonhard was one of my favorite all time Badger players but that isnβt why he should be handed the job. Or the threat of player transfers. If he were an elite level recruiter (heβs not BTW) then maybe itβs an easier decision.
I understand talking out of your ass is your thing, but on what grounds can you speak so confidently regarding Jim as a recruiter?
Name one elite defense player heβs recruited to Madison. Heβs been there for a half a dozen years.
Chryst wasnβt great either and over time you see where things are (right now). This roster isnβt loaded with talent. The skill positions are really lacking.
Since the director of personnel bailed for MSU a couple of years ago (and wasnβt backfilled WTF) itβs gotten progressively worse.
In terms of pure revenue, the Wisconsin athletic program is top 15 in the nation. So go get a top 15 guy to run football and see what can happen.
Urban is available.
So despite having a top nationally ranked defense every year that he's been here, Leonhard can't recruit defensive players? Really? Maybe they just need a few more top recruits like Mertz on the defensive side, huh. Tschmack, every time a team loses a game, your solution seems to be to fire everybody. Heck, a couple weeks ago, you wanted to back up the Brinks truck for Dave Aranda. The same Dave Aranda who was just embarrassed at home 31-3? Maybe he can't recruit either.
@Pikes Peak posted:Urban is available.
Coeds everywhere cringe at that.
I may still back up the Brinks truck for Aranda.
The guy has won everywhereβs heβs been including as a head coach. Second year, 12-2 and Sugar Bowl champion. Not too shabby when you consider Baylor has to play and recruit against power house programs like A&M and UT. Head to head, Iβm not sure the BT West would do well against the Big XII this year.
As for Wisconsinβs defense, theyβve were dominant prior to Leonhard showing up and heβs continued that tradition so hats off to him. But other than Hunter Wohler Iβm not sure thereβs been a 4 or 5 star guy on D recently.

Braelon Allen

Based on Urban's tenure at Florida, I think Madison would have to double the size of their police department.
Winning is important, but not at the expense of the things Urban brings to town.

That's way beyond the hallucinogenic level provided by weed.

I'm sure they talk to a lot of 4-5 star guys, but let's face it, Wisconsin is not a place many 18-20 year olds want to be. Limited travel options in and out of town. Winters can be brutal. While the facilities are pretty good it is still a long trip for partents to come to home games if you are from Floriduh, Texas or California. If Nick Sabin was at Madison even he couldn't get the recruits he gets at Alabama.
I would agree ammo if this was 1988. But itβs not.
Wisconsin will never be Ohio State or Michigan or Alabama or Texas or Georgia but itβs a top 15-20 football program. When you consider facilities and overall athletics it and revenues it may be close to top 10 in all of D1.
That is all well and good, but again, many 18-20 year olds want nothing to do with Madison or Wisconsin. No beaches to party at, brutal winters that seem to last forever, and not the amount of blond bimbos you see down south or the west coast.
But, we got βjump aroundβ.

Do we ignore the fact that they actually have to attend classes?
I haven't been able to see many Badgers games this year but I finally was able to sit down and watch this one. My thoughts on it is that Iowa's defense is pretty darn good and Mertz is pretty damn bad. I mean brutally bad except for that long TD pass.
And what the heck is it with terrible special teams in the state of Wisconsin? and man the OL play seems to really have dropped off.
As for JL I think you can see a couple of things I like and it seems like he is opening up the offense even with the limitations of talent especially in the OL and at QB.
