Oh, I've got thoughts...

My formative years in the early 90's were dedicated to chasing college tang and unfortunately the soundtrack of that demographic was a veritable Lilith Fair. I know the genre well. Not to be confused with the Indigo Girls/Melissa Etheridge/Joni Mitchell genre so popular with the out-of-the-closet, denim and turquoise wearing butch dykes with their Birkenstocks and hemp-soap-making.

This genre was popular with the "gender fluid pioneers," of the late 80's/early 90's...a confusing time in the music industry as we transitioned from the hair bands like Poison and Motley Crue, into the grunge pioneers Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. The "I might be a lesbian, I might not be, only when I've had too many Zimas," subset were musically homeless. And these tunes answered their call...

Some solid solo artists like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan, and then the bands fronted by outstanding vocalists like Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries), Harriet Wheeler (Sundays) and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) come to mind. Dolores is my favorite female vocalist of all time...gone way too soon.
