Report: Texans, J.J. Watt agree to terms on 6-year, $100M extension

When Texans defensive end J.J. Watt signs his six-year, $100 million contract extension that includes $51.876 million guaranteed, he will become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Watt’s extension surpasses the previous record set by former Texans defensive end Mario Williams, who signed a six-year, $96 million contract with Buffalo that included $50 million guaranteed.

General manager Rick Smith, vice president of football administration Chris Olsen and agent Tom Condon reached an agreement in principle on the record-setting extension late Monday night, according to people familiar with the negotiations. They worked all day Monday and into the night to complete the deal before the Texans begin practice for Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Washington Redskins.

Watt, 25, will sign Tuesday, and a there will be a news conference at NRG Stadium. continue

Dang.  Guess that nixes the chance of him ever becoming a packer.

Finally Wisconsin fans have something to brag about!  JJwattSD must be so proud, the love of his life having so much success!

Maybe the people of Houston will make JJ the grand marshal of the gay pride parade instead of just a participant...

The one thing I wonder is when teams lock players up to these long 6+ year contracts at age 23-25, how soon before they start whining that they have already outplayed it?

I don't recall who the OL was in Dallas but he just signed a ridiculously long contract in the offseason thanks to Jerruh who locked him up something like 8-9 years. Who the hell in their right mind would sign that?

TT and Russ Ball are pretty savy about these deals. At 25, they usually do 4 year deals and allow the player to cash in again at age 29. I fully realize JJ Watt is a unique player but I wonder how soon before his deal is up will it be undervalued and players far less superior to him will sign contracts that make his look like a bargain.

Run from it all you want, but this is easily your dummest take ever.  Your second dummest take was how Russell Favre/Seneca Wilson would be a stiff, but we'll save that for another day.

Iowacheese thinks you should stop being such a Sconnie leg-humper.

NOT A FIT FOR THE 3-4!!!

Think of Jaymo, the ultimate leg humper.  He's the prototype.

There it is. Too easy to get a rise out of Sconnie fans. The most sensitive fans in college football. And for the record, I think believing Levi Brown was a better pick that Joe Thomas was my dumbest take ever. I maintained that I thought JJ Watt was a very good player, I just thought he was better suited for 4-3 than the 3-4...I think I even compared him to Julius Peppers. Not sure why that's an insult. It's okay though, I understand your Badger blood won't allow you to not be offended if someone doesn't worship your players.

No rise, just pointing out your utter stupidity with that take.  Nice strawman, though.  You must be in really good shape from moving those goalposts around so quickly and easily.

My dummest take ever was that Ryan Grant reminded me of Emmitt Smith in the hours after he ran for 200+ against Seattle in the playoffs, but I blame beer and temporary insanity for that.

Regardless, that looks like the theory of relativity compared to the Watt idiocy.  Just own your dumbass take and move on.

Until then, your new name from me is GraveDiggermo.

Oh no you didn't.

Typical Carimi classic pose. Sitting on the Jamal Reynolds memorial bench. Note the body lean:

This guy elevated a whole lot of his teammates. After watching him play they all thought they were worth JJ Watt money.

Yep, I said that.  I was an idiot.  I also thought Carimi would be a good pro, but that was also a dum take.  Just not as dum as the Ryan Grant take.

We all have them - some more often than others.

It only makes it worse when you  though.

Watt is one of the 5 best defensive players in football. (Sherman, Earl Thomas, Quinn, Willis, Watt) Can make an argument Luke Kuechly is better than Willis.

Still, that's too much scratch to pay a defensive player.

If Clowney actually amounts to a a talent, Watt will be 28 and they will have a bit of a problem on their hands when it's time to extend Clowney, and an even bigger problem if they ever manage to develop a QB worth a crap.

Exactly.  Watt is one of the best defensive players in the NFL but even when he's at his best, he cannot affect a game like a QB.  I'm convinced the only players in the NFL worth more than $10m a year are QB's.

Great player, probably best non-QB in football.  But he's not worth $16m a year.  No non-QB is.

Yeah, most fans are pretty clueless.

Yeah, I remember a time when Goalline refused to believe my argument that Kendrell Bell(who?) should win Rookie of the year over LaDainian Tomlinson.

Never understood NFL guys doing long term deals.  The money isn't guaranteed like it is in the MLB.

A smart player is looking to collect big signing bonuses several times throughout his career.

At his best he is disrupting what a QB is doing, no?

That said, I don't think any of these players are worth what they make... entertainment, that's all it is.

Though Kate Upton may be worth whatever she is getting paid.
