Verlander is one of the top three pitchers in the game, and is worth whatever the top pitcher in the game makes per year (be it Kershaw, or Felix Hernandez). But the length of the contract necessary for him to make it to $200 million would scare me off. He just turned 30, and he's thrown a hell of a lot of innings. (953 2/3 in the last four years, leading the AL in 3 of the last 4 seasons). By today's standards, that's a lot of wear and tear on the arm.
He'd need to average $25 million a year for 8 seasons, and I just don't see the Tigers making that kind of a commitment. Now Clayton Kershaw will only be 25 in March. He'd be 32 by the time that contract is coming to an end.
The debate about who the top starting pitcher in the Majors would be an interesting one. But if anybody is going to crack a $200 million contract, the safe bet would be Kershaw.
If Verlander gets that, it won't be in Detroit. And look at the Phillies- giant contracts for a "Cy Young" p staff and it has got them in salary hell with no rings and no financial flexibility. NO team should even consider these kind of deals anymore.
