NFLN guy says even more money.

Rolling the dice on the gangsta QB.  This will go down well with all the other SF vets looking for $$$.
@RapSheet: For #49ers QB Colin Kaepernick: It’s a 6-year extension worth up to $126M with $60M guaranteed, source says. Under contract through 2020

No, they didn't.  They could have made him play out his deal this year and franchised him this offseason for somewhere just north of $20M, I believe.

$60M guaranteed?  Wow.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what the actual contract is instead of what the agent is putting out there.  It'll be interesting to see how many of their other guys are going to have to get the boot to manage this contract under the cap.

Is anyone other than Kaepernick happier right now than Andrew Luck?  What's he going to get?  $200 million?

Russel Wilson?

I would freaking love this if Kaep and Wilson each crack $20 million per. For one simple reason. Kaep and Wilson are better because of the other 52 on their current rosters. As their CAP number dilutes that surrounding talent pool their flaws will be more apparent. You can get away with a little more paying AR $20 million. He's a much better QB than either of those two guys.

Technically, your right.  They would have him for possibly 2 more years, this year for peanuts and next year for a Top 5 salary, and probably gone after that.

Think about if this was AR, who got us to 1 SB (lost) and 2 NFCCG the past two years, going into his final year of his contract.  Should we gamble and not pay him, or do we pay him, and quite possibly overpay for him.

CK was in the cat bird's seat, is he a great QB, I don't think so, but he has QB'ed a team that has won alot the past couple of years.  Mostly, due to their D, but he has made plays as well.  Did they overpay, more than likely, but IMO, they didn't have a choice.

Every non-49ers fan should be celebrating.  Kaepernick is now the highest paid QB in the league yet he isn't even top 5 discussion for the best.  What's the opposite of "value"?  Because that's what the 49ers are getting here.

Kaep has not been the best player on his team the past two years. As time goes by his contract will make him the best player on his team. That's not a good thing if you're a 49'er fan.

I'm of the strong opinion he's not repeatedly kicking GB's ass as time goes on. Maybe I'm wrong. It's one thing to put a few good years together in this league. It's another thing entirely to continue winning when a decent chunk of your roster has been turned over.

The details of the contract will be interesting. SF also has at least 2 players on their team that  want to be paid now.

The good people at "over the cap"  have not post anything yet.  For when they do here is the link.

That number ($1.6M) does not include the $5.1M in cap space that the 49ers recently recovered by releasing Carlos Rodgers, so they should have closer to $6.7M in cap room before CK's contract extension.

SF has more cap than 1.6 mil after june ist, as thought they cut somebody recently with a june 1st designation or something like that. If correct that raised their cap like 6 mil over the  1.6 for about 7.6 mil. Could be wrong, but comments I read earlier in that PFT article this morning indicates the june 1st numbers had not been added in yet.

Regardless, thats a lot of coin for a middle of the pack running QB.

The guy definitely has his flaws and might be the best bet among mega-deal QBs to crash and burn, but this is the going rate to keep a QB. If you'd rather have the guy than not have him, it's going to cost over $15M a year.

Romo and Cutty are a combined 1-4 in the playoffs against winning teams, and they're both in the $100M club. I can make more of a case for CK and his three straight NFCCs than either of those two, but the reality is none of them is even top 7 in the league. (Andy Dalton is going to be a fascinating case study in this new pay dynamic.)

If you happen to root for the best QB in the game, it's a great problem for the rest of the league to have. Second-tier guys are being paid on par with the elite, and now Rodgers' deal looks like a bargain.

The Whiners got to the NFC Championship game, and probably should have won it, with Alex Smith.

That team is built on defense and a run game...there were times last year they won in spite of Kappy.

I am ecstatic about this contract...really hamstrings that franchise.

This is what is so crazy.  It's the NBA all over again, where you had your all-NBA guys making the max yet all these mid-level guys were also getting the max.  Only Rodgers, Brees, Brady and Manning should be at $20m.  Those are the only QB's who, when healthy, are a near lock to make the playoffs.  I mean if those 4 guys go to the Jaguars, they probably go to the playoffs.  No other QB in the NFL can do that which is why it's insane to pay lesser QB's at this level.

Chili Jon.

You are smarter than me at football things.

You are funnier than me on this board.

However, I probably make more more money than you and I'm pretty damn sure I have better hair.

We should be friends.

2014 will be a bellwether year for Kaepernick. If his passing doesn't improve this year, it will mean that he's pretty much at his max ability as a passer right now (a bigger, smarter Michael Vick in essence). Whiners fans are currently blaming the WRs for his inability to play like a top flight passer, which is absolutely ridiculous. His defense, OL, rushing attack, TE and WRs are all amongst the best in the league. If he can't make it work with those guys, he can't do it with anyone. If Rodgers was under center for the 49ers offense last year, he would have thrown for 5,000+ yards. Think about how many extra/longer possessions his OL/Rushing attack and defense were able to net him over the course of the year compared to the Packers. When you factor all that's around him in San Francisco, it's hard to say he didn't underperform last year.

JJSD makes a good point. The timing is just bizarre. SF has a lot of really good players coming up as FA's in 2015 and 16. Crabtree, Davis, Iupati, Aldon Smith, Bowman, Boone, Gore, Justin Smith, Boldin for starters.

SF is still a loaded roster but they just announced a lot of those FA's won't be in SF much longer. So all those guys are now going to spend time wondering who's going to be around and who won't. And then Baalke releases a statement that "Colins hard work and dedication played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization" and this beauty, "our organization always looks to reward our players for their contributions and commitment to the team". That's pretty nutty stuff when you're strong arming your coach and a few key guys have been asking about rewarding their contributions.

And HTF do you guarantee $61 million to a guy with 31 career TDs against 11 picks that completes less than 60% of his attempts over a little less than 2 years???? Phillip Rivers puts those stats up year in year out.

Just a lot of WTF but after the last few years, glad to see it!

Looks like 6yr/110 mil contract with escalators that reset every year up to $126 mil total, and only $12 mil signing bonus.  Don't have figures on a per year though. $61 guaranteed.

http://profootballtalk.nbcspor...ck-contract-details/

Detail of the contract are coming out, really only 13 million guaranteed. SF really protected themselves. One of the most complicated contracts I have ever read about. Lots of ways for Kaepernick not to get paid and easy outs for the 49ers.

Sounds like a smart cantract strucure for the 49ers.

If Kaepernik developes into a franchise QB then they get themselves a 6 year bargain, if he disappoints, they can move on without a huge cap hangover.

You're the future of our franchise Colin unless you're not the future of our franchise

Not sure what to make of this contract other than its a good contract for SF except for the $2 million per year de-escalator in guaranteed money that stops if SF makes the SB or he makes first or second team all pro.

In short, if guys in SF bust ass and help their QB make SB or All Pro they may be greasing the wheels for going elsewhere.

I know it has to be hard to pass up 13M, but why would he sign that contract?  He had the leverage, and to sign a contract with a clause that makes him take out an insurance policy that he has to pay for, for his employer, would be a non starter for me.
