Horseshit call on the 3rd strike to Sanchez.
Williams struggling again. 2nd and 3rd, 0 outs.
Williams making it interesting again tonight. Brewers up 6-4, but Devin allows the first two runners on (HBP followed by a double).
Playing with fire two nights in a row.
Now Williams walks a guy with one out to load the bases with Goldschmidt up. Last night, I was worried about a Goldschmidt walkoff game winning HR. Same position again tonight.
Williams gets a big break. Goldschmidt gets called out on strikes on what could have easily been ball 4 to walk in a run.
Now Williams does walk in a run on 4 pitches. Tying run on 3rd. Winning run on 2nd.
2-0 count with the bases loaded now and the pitches aren't even close.
Williams completes the meltdown with another 4 pitch walk.
Just completely lost his control. All over the place.
UNREAL.
Murphy pulls Williams - but probably too late at this point. MeGill in.
Another bad decision by Murphy leaving Williams in. He was done after Carpenter - needed to go to Megill earlier.
Kinda glad I cut over to the DNC for my wifey.

He walked 3 of the last 4 guys and got bailed out on Goldschmidt as he should have walked 4 in a row (plus the HBP with 2 strikes to start the inning).
How in the holy hell, do you leave Williams in after the 1st 4 pitch walk, after throwing 17 pitches yesterday. you have to save Williams from himself
Megill gets out of it.

Oof - thatβs true love.
Hoskins strikes out to lead off the 10th. He's now 0 for his last 16 and 2 for his last 27 at the plate.
Brewers fail to score in the top of the 10th.
Well, if you are ever going to give up a grand slam, it might as well be then. A single would have had the same effect.
Lose on a walk off grand slam. The loss doesnβt matter in the big picture - just kind of sucky with the way Williams looked in the 9th and Murphy leaving him in too long.

When the top 3 teams in the NL, are separated by 1.5 games, top 2 get a bye, it kind of does really matter
Bounce back day after last night. Can still win the series. Contreras with a day off catching. ESPN has the Brewers with a 60% chance of winning. I like that chance.
Yes last night was a huge downer in the fact they went back to being the #3 seed. But in the grand scheme of things, unless it becomes a 5 - 6 game losing streak it is just another tough loss. Montas looked very good on Tuesday and hope he keeps that up down the stretch and into the playoffs. I just hope Murphy has learned that if Williams looks like he doesn't have control on any given night, well get him out of there. We've seen this before too, Last season he had several nights and CC kept him out there hoping he would find it. Sometimes he didn't.
Just get back after it today, do your best and let the chips fall where they may. Just don't let it be a habit.

The key for Williams is getting that first pitch strike to get ahead in the count. His off-speed stuff can be unhittable when a guy has to protect the plate with 2 strikes. If you look at the pitch location on the two walks above, you can see he missed badly on his first pitch and then the Cards hitters just taking pitches just off the plate that they might swing at if they were behind on the count.
With a 1:15 CT start ( no TV) here is the Pitching comparison:
Player | W-L | ERA | WHIP | IP | H | K | BB | HR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
8-7 | 4.00 | 1.21 | 137.1 | 115 | 162 | 51 | 22 | |
8-10 | 5.41 | 1.29 | 138.0 | 156 | 96 | 22 | 20 |
Won't disagree with you M P. But it is important for almost all pitchers to throw 1st pitch strikes, some more than others. Williams is one of the some. His fastball has little movement and ML hitters will hit that no matter how hard he throws it. Williams really needs to develop a 3rd pitch. Something in between fastball and change up. But once again, Murphy has to realize if Williams doesn't have the feel of the change up he has to get him out of there. Nobody wants to get beat with their 2nd best but you don't want to get beat with your best being ineffective either.
I have no stats to back it up (too lazy) but it seems that Garrett Mitchell takes an abnormally high amount of called 3rd strikes.
But he just saved a run on a deep fly out by Nootbar. Reached way over and above the wall according to the radio guys.
Mears comes into the pitch the 7th in a scoreless game and gives up 3 singles before walking Contreras with the bases loaded (after getting ahead 0-2 in the count).

And then gives up a single for the Brewers to fall behind 2-0.
And then Wilson replaces him and the Cards go up 3-0 on a single.
This one may be getting out of hand. Still obviously in good shape overall, but the fact that the starting pitchers (while pitching well) can't give you more than 4 (Myers) or 5 (Peralta) innings eventually catches up to you.
Wilson now just walked to bases loaded. Already down 3-0.
Sanchez leads off the 8th by striking out on a 3-2 pitch that was probably 4 inches inside.
Monasterio gets called out with 1 out in the 8th on a terrible call.
Maybe Murphy needs to get thrown out again. Cards getting the borderline calls and the Brewers are not.
I also don't understand why you pinch hit Monasterio for Turang in the top of the 8th. I know it avoids a lefty-lefty matchup, and if you had a really good right handed hitter to put in it would make sense.
But Monasterio is batting 200 with a 610 OPS in 50 ABs against lefties.
Turang is at 222 and 560. Monasterio is marginally better, but not enough to take Turang out.
Haase was on the bench and is at 385/1275 against righties this year (with 2 HRS in 13 ABs). It would pretty simple to pinch hit Haase there and then do a defensive replacement with Monasterio.
Very questionable decision by Murphy.
Brewers lose on a 3 hit shutout. Still way up in the division, but the offense just got dominated by a guy with a 5.19 ERA for the year.
The only consistent offense since Yelich was hurt has been Contreras and Chourio (with some Adames hot stretches mixed in).
Never thought I'd see the bullpen melt down 2 games in a row. And that is 2 bad outings in a row by Mears. Say bye bye Nick.
Time for the guy who was anointed here just yesterday as the leading candidate for manager of the year to manage. All teams stumble a bit here and there, the trick is to keep the stumbles short.
Right the ship Pat.
