We just don't have that much talent on defense. Watch the best defenses play and ask yourself "how many of our defenders would start for this team?".... when I do this my answer is "3 to 4" .

They have two strong Pro Bowl candidates (Alexander and Z. Smith). K. Clark is a good NT. None of the DBs are liabilities. What they need (and have needed for a decade) is a LB who can make a difference in the middle of the field. AJ Hawk, Brad Jones, Ryan, Martinez, Kirksey. It's all the same. It's a tough position to play being able to put up some resistance covering guys like Kamara out of the backfield, TEs like Kittle, and being able to stop the run. But when your DC apparently feels it's better to play dime a lot in base defense it says a lot about what Pettine thinks about his ILB talent.

In the end, if they lose in the playoffs they are going to regret not doing anything to add personnel from the draft that could contribute this year. As Henry and others have said, Jordan Love and AJ Dillon better up being an All-Pros for this past off-season to be labeled anything other than a failure.

I was rewatching some of the 2014 game vs NE.  We had 3 rookies making significant contributions late in the season on that team.  Adams, Linsley and Ha Ha.  The addition of those 3 (Peppers notwithstanding) got them to the NFCCG and should have powered them to another SB.  Draft picks can make a big difference even as rooks.
