I'm also disappointed with Amazon's streaming of Thursday night games. Honestly, I'm not sure why they bought it from the NFL and why the NFL sold it to them. So far, it doesn't seem to be doing either of them any good. I'm a prime member, so it comes with my outrageous prime fee, but the stream is jittery at times, lags behind real time, and the announcers are uninspired. Man, I miss Madden.

Right? I don't get the fascination with this guy. What's he ever done and if he's such a great coordinator, why isn't he a DC already? He's been available for years.

Rust. He hasn't played in a meaningful game in 7 + months.
Jesus Fuck.
Just brutal tackling here. And a reminder that the Packers traded up to take Amari Rodgers in the third round of the 2021 draft 27 picks before the Lions selected Amon-Ra St. Brown. pic.twitter.com/zYLxbYRYXU

Buck stops with LaFleur, he has to help his young QB out more. He did him no favors with the first half gameplan. When Goff is successful it's because his OC forces him to play in structure, which he is easily smart enough to do, his biggest issue is that he can't ad lib and he can't navigate the pocket when things break down. Love isn't quite there yet either although he can scramble, but he needs to be given as much structure as possible to get in a rhythm and slow the pass rush. The OL was struggling, but they weren't struggling less in he second half, LaFleur gave Love more opportunities to get the ball out faster. LaFleur's best games are when he doesn't have toys to play with and he has to manufacture drives with KISS theory. Seems like when he has a full stable of weapons he feels like he has to have a very complicated gameplan. I don't think this group of skill players, QB included, is mature enough yet to execute gameplans that Rodgers has executed in the past. The first half seemed like last years gameplan with Rodgers. The second half seemed like they adjusted and got it right and did what their guys could handle.
Mike McDaniel and Kyle Shannahan run successful offenses because they NEVER let things get complicated. Even when things look complicated, it's pretty basic football, they just execute well. They manufacture touches and yardage, like you would if you're on your 2nd QB, 4th WR and 3rd RB, but they do it with the most elite talent in the league. It's dumb simple, but you let (or force) elite players run simple schemes and it's tremendous.

To be fair, I hiked five hours yesterday to get my new avatar, so by the time the second half rolled around I was a bit tired.

I wouldn't drag Tom and Walker too much. They only have a couple starts under their belt and are learning their positions. Royce Newman is no better than a deep backup. It's like the Jake Hanson experiment at the beginning of last year when Jenkins was out. JRJ is consistently inconsistent. Myers is just too tall for the center position and cannot anchor - he may actually be better as a guard.
I don't know the snap count but Hollins and Enegbare are liabilities on the edge against the run. And, we were rolling with Corey Ballentine at corner for a bunch of the night.
I have no expectations of a winning record this year as LaFleur figures out how the offense with Love at the helm and the known deficiencies on defense, Barry included. Just hope to see improvement as the year progresses.

We're you able to climb up the tower? There was an old fire tower in the Eagle River area where we used to vacation as a child. It was a great view.
Also, how many great Packer seasons started 2-2? Remember 4-6? This team will mature before our eyes by Thanksgiving. And lastly, can Amazon help my stream? Many issues there..
I actually got to the cab back in August, although I was aghast that I didn't take very many photos from the cab, which is part of the reason I went back yesterday. (That, and I wanted to do a loop trail instead of an in and out.)
Yesterday the cab wasn't open (I wasn't expecting it to be) and it was windy enough that I only got halfway up the cab to take just enough pictures above the treeline and get down.
There are actually five mountaintop fire towers in the Catskills, and I started a thread about them over in the Lounge, having climbed up to all five this summer.
Amazon stream was very jittery and pixelated last night. In Nevada. My buddies house. Cox cable. Not sure what he has his account speed set at.
With so many people complaining about it, it can't be an isolated incident.
I could go through the rest of my life and never need to see the Packers running an option play ever again.

Detroit ended up being the perfect landing spot for Goff. He has really settled in with regard to what they need from him, and that structure with the offense as a whole is the exact thing he needs to keep from trying to do too much. Quite a number of times last night, it felt like the Lions had out-schemed GB so badly that they could afford that extra second in the pocket, that extra block, passes didn't need pinpoint accuracy because the design of the play had the defenders completely out of position no matter what.
The Lions running game reminded me of the way Jerry Kramer explains the deadly effectiveness of the power sweep. Once the defense commits, the back can adjust and find the next lane, because the lanes are exposed based upon the way the defense reacts. We've seen that time and time again with the Packer defense for a good while now. And the most striking thing with the Lions in both the run game and passing game is the fundamental simplicity. They're a well coached and disciplined team. They can trust their qb to follow the route concepts that brings guys open, and they look to hit you in the mouth and dare you to stop the run. They did it twice to GB last year, and now again last night.
Fundamentals go a long way in football if you're true and consistent with them. To me, that explains the gap between the two teams last night. Unforced errors, missed tackles, dumb mistakes on one side, and simple disciplined blocking and tackling on the other.
Apparently the game plan was to pass early and score quick to neutralize the Lions run game.
But:
-Opened with 11 passes = net 0 yards. -10 yards into the 3rd quarter. 😡
-Jones and Watson on snap count = invisible in 1st half.
-We needed quick release plays and if it wasn’t a throw behind LOS Love was holding the ball like 12 as OL collapsed.
-MLF halftime interview came off as scared, bullied kid trying to talk tough. It rang hollow. He never has team ready for big games or able to deal with adversity. Needs to dig deep-er.
-No run D, Barry refuses to try 1 high safety or stuff the box. Death by a thousand cuts.
-Manhandled in all 3 phases, Lions for real.
-Stop giving Milwaukee/Gold package Mon and Thur night games. Apparently they don’t want to travel weeknights so they sell their tickets and we get sea of blue. Bad look.
+Team had fire in 2nd half. 🔥
+Kicker hit a 50 yarder.
+Extra time off to regroup.
Seeing some of the replay, the DET offense looked more like what I thought GB's offense would look like this year.

Obviously. Just giving you shit man, relax.
As bad as they looked last night they looked worse opening game against new orleans in Jacksonville a of years ago. I am not looking forward to playing those guys in Detroit for Thanksgiving but packers should be in every other game they play this year. They could still win 9 or 10 games
Quay is making a lot of tackles downfield because they're positioning him 5+yds off the LOS. That's not his fault, that's the scheme. However, I'm guessing one of if not the reason he is that far off is because he has a history of not diagnosing and sorting through wash when playing up on the line. That was his pre-draft rap.
LVN resembles a young Harry Kane.
Just don't call him Hairy Cane!
Barry sucks and I have my doubts about LaFleur but the bottom line is that Detroit is a better team right now.
@DH13 posted:The score is the least of their problems. What we all saw tonight was not encouraging in any way. Soft teams don't just change overnight. It takes a cultural shift. Physical and mental. This team will always have problems with SF, NYJ, DET, TB, and any team with the same talent and fortitude unless their own talent just grossly outweighs them. Good luck!
Like bringing in a Dan Campbell.

2. The OL is the biggest long-term problem for them. I think OL is a lot about finding 2 or 3 good lineman and then plugging in guys in the other positions and then scheming to cover up their weaknesses.
If Jenkins and Bakh play, you can basically just leave them on islands and slide your protection schemes and call plays to help out the lineman that are "just guys." I think Myers is at least average, but he's surrounded by absolute garbage at guard right now which it makes it hard to evaluate him. The problem they have right now is that it's Myers (maybe a B- level) lineman surrounded by a bunch of D+ guys as options (Newman, Walker, Runyan, Nijman, etc.). If every lineman you have needs some help, it makes it almost impossible to do anything. The TEs they now have aren't good run blockers (maybe DeGuara is OK). It would be good to have M. Lewis in this situation.
The offensive line is garbage. With Bakhtiari on his way out, the reality isn't pretty. Jenkins recent injuries add more doubt. At least with a healthy Jenkins there was a foundation to build around. He showed he probably needs to be on the left side, but he's also shown previously he can be a pretty good left tackle.
Tom's best spot is probably Center. Love the guy, but his size/strength is an issue.
The rest are chum.
Walker got exposed last night. He was bad even for a rookie. And he might have the most promise of the remainder. I'm not sure he has the feet for LT.
Nijman is JAGtastic.
Myers might be serviceable competing for a backup guard spot, but preferably not starting. Same for Runyan.
Newman is just bad, but he's at least good enough to be exposed as terrible, unlike Rhyan and Jones. It isn't like they're sitting behind Bulaga, Clifton, Lang and Sitton, either. Guys need time to develop, but when they can't even earn snaps on a line like this it's not promising.

He consistently had the Badgers ranked as one of the top defenses in the nation. With their recruiting pool, his defenses were considered on par or better than the top programs.
People believe he turned down the Packer DC gig because he believed he was in line for the HC job. Didn’t happen and he is taking a year off.

Give Jones and Ryhan a start to see what you got there. We need to know if we are looking for 1 or two tackles this off-season and we need to know if we are looking for 2 or 3 guards.

Must listen podcast for me every week. Great football discussion from a GM perspective
Big fan of Mike Wahle’s analysis. Honesty and candor is missing within the program right now. And I’m not talking about MLFs cheesy presser vents. It’s fake outrage because no one is responding.
The most accurate and damning comment.
“schemes- that is the softest philosophically - defense I have seen in a long time.”
Yup.
Maybe Mike Wahle should become our defensive coordinator.
I watched his podcast on the game and loved the part where he said the Lions OC kicked Barry's ass. The other thing to note is that he is friends with that OC, and many other coaches around the league, so I deduct that he isn't alone in his opinions.
