Despite what MM says, I'd rather he ride the guy who has a hot hand than rotate backs. Sometimes it seems a RB just gets going and then he gets pulled for the other guy who comes in cold. Or they go away from the run altogether. If we're going to run the ball, make the commitment to the run and a back until the other team stops it.

Weds practice doin's from the JSO:

Green Bay — The secondary for the Green Bay Packers received a much-needed boost Wednesday when both Sam Shields (shoulder) and Quinten Rollins (neck) returned to practice.

Both Shields and Rollins were injured in the loss to the Denver Broncos two weeks ago. Their injuries kept them out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers in which quarterback Cam Newton threw for more than 200 yards in the first half.

Rollins was more involved than Shields on Wednesday.

But the secondary also took another hit over the weekend when cornerback Casey Hayward suffered a concussion. He left the game in the second half and continues to move through the necessary protocol. Hayward did not practice Wednesday.

Also absent were rookie Damarious Randall (unknown) and right tackle Bryan Bulaga (unknown). Randall notched his second interception in as many games against the Panthers and had developed into a strong presence for defensive coordiantor Dom Capers.

Linebacker Mike Neal (unknown) was present Wednesday but did not participate fully.

Two doses of good news surfaced on the offensive side of the ball, where rookie receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) and tight end Andrew Quarless (knee) were back to varying degrees.

Montgomery, who injured his ankle in the win over the San Diego Chargers prior to the bye week, had both ankles wrapped and moved fairly easily. He took part in every drill during the portion of practice open to the media.

Still on injured reserve/designated to return, Quarless is eligible to practice this week for the first time since leaving the win over the Kansas City Chiefs with a knee problem. He arrived at practice a few minutes after the rest of the offense, presumably after completing a rehab session indoors, and was mostly an observer.

Quarless is eligible to play on Thanksgiving against the Chicago Bears.

@TomSilverstein: Surprise appearance by WR Jordy Nelson at #Packers practice. Caught a few passes. No routes but the guy walks around like his ACL is fine.

Maybe there's a double-secret IR/designated to return rule no one knows about.

Take Janis' jersey and give it to Jordy, Tell Janis to lay low for 3 months.

No one will catch on until "Janis" catches a few TD's.

You know what. Never mind. As soon as "Janis" runs a few good routes and catches a pass or two everyone will start asking questions.

I've actually thought about this. What if in a playoff game suddenly "Michael" Bennett is playing both ways taking snaps at TE. Everyone on the field realizes its really his brother Martellus - whose Bears are obviously at home - in Michael's jersey.

Do the refs force him to remove his helmet and look at photos? Are there blood tests taken? Does he step on a scale to compare listed weights? Does it spill into a 6-month, $300 million legal case?

Janis has a little Eddie Munster thing going on. But you throw one of those LT / Calvin Johnson Foster Grant face shields on and Jordy ... I mean "Janis"... is having a monster second half.

Ricky Williams did interviews with his helmet on so it's not like anyone is breaking ground here.

Tom Silverstein talked with Sam Shields about his injury.

Green Bay - Cornerback Sam Shields said he was able to move around pretty well in practice Wednesday and felt that his injured shoulder was improving enough that he could play Sunday against Detroit.

Shields suffered a shoulder sprain in the first quarter of the Denver game two weeks ago and did not play against Carolina.

Practice Wednesday was not conducted in pads, but Shields said progress is being made.

"I feel pretty good today," Shields said. "I did a lot of moving. Things I thought I wasn't able to do, I was able to do it, going up and getting the ball and things like that. Everything felt good. But I'm still taking it one day at a time."

The next step for Shields will be to practice in pads Thursday and see how the shoulder responds to being banged around a little. A bigger concern than that, however, appears to be his ability to reach out or extend upward with his arm.

He said that if he were able to play against Detroit, he would wear a brace on his shoulder to help keep it from opening too far and causing a recurrence of the injury. His former teammate, Tramon Williams, was able to play through almost an entire season with a harness...

Very important to have Sam back and playing well.

@WesHod: According to #Lions report, Bryan Bulaga (knee), Mike Neal (hip), Casey Hayward (concussion) and Damarious Randall (illness) didn't practice.

@WesHod: Lang (back), Sitton (back), Matthews, Perry, Lacy (groin), Montgomery, and Shields were limited. Quinten Rollins (neck) full participant.

He hasn't been making blocks this year.  He whiffed a couple of times in pass protection against the panthers and I have seen him miss blocks in other games causing sacks and hurries.

He also gets blown up when he blocks on running plays as well, the huge starks run against the chargers happened because Kuhns block was so bad that it forced Starks to reverse the play, it ended up good but Kuhn got stood up right in the hole that starks was supposed to run through.

IMHO, Rip should be starting and Kuhn should only be used to spell him.

Kuhn is excellent when he sneaks out for a pass and no one covers him, other than that, I think he's done.

Rip won the hearts of a few Packer fans with that play.  As long as he doesn't start shooting a gun in Florida to scare his girlfriend, he'll get a pass in Green Bay for a couple years

Can this be true?  (from WTMJ):

"

More than one-fourth of the Green Bay Packers active roster, including six starters, are battling injury problems as they get ready for the Detroit Lions."

Do our players not properly condition themselves during the off-season?  A quarter of the roster injured????

More stretching?

Another streamer for me.

Of course next weekend when they play the Queens I will be in WI having to work.

But, TBH, the goat has been fantastic compared to what it was just a couple of years ago.

Thanks Bartman, I was calling this out in last weeks GDT.  Every time I watched Kuhn he whiffed.  Be it pass pro, or run blocking.  He ****ing whiffed.

The bandwagon was full saying he was done and shouldn't have been paid.  I agreed.

Get the Ripper in and let's see what the kid can do.

I mean for ****s sake, a FB should be able to line up as a TE and do similar **** since our TE can't do **** right now.  I don't think Koooooooooon can do that right now.  It's time to take away the binky and see what else can happen.

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's pre-practice press conference Thursday:

  • (On Bulaga) Just coming back a little slow from the game. Getting some work on the knee. We'll see what he can do today.
  • (On whether it affected him in game) He missed practice on Saturday, so I'm sure it did.
  • (On whether it's the same knee he hurt earlier in the season) Yes.
  • (On line being injured) It's Week 10 in the NFL, everybody has something. It's just a product of where we are.
  • (On Lions) I see them as a talented division opponent. You trust the video, what they put on video. There's been a philosophy shift offensively. We're preparing for that. This is a very talented football team.
  • (On what might be different) You look at the relationship between Jim Caldwell and his time in Denver. Those are things you look back at. You buckle down on everything.
  • (On pass rush) Statistically, we haven’t sacked a quarterback, and we’re not hitting the quarterback the last two weeks. We’re looking to improve. It hasn’t been where it was the first six weeks, the past two weeks. That’s something we’ve brought up. Not where it needs to be. Something that was brought up in self-scout.
  • (On Sam Shields) Good practice. Very encouraged. Today is padded practice. Hope he feels as good as he did yesterday.
  • (On best thing Damarious Randall has done) Ability to play in man situations, where you feel comfortable putting him out there. Ability to make plays. Like the way he sticks his nose in there. He's getting better at every opportunity.

I really hope Montgomery plays.  I think the offense will start clicking when all WR starters from 1-4 are playing.  That hasn't been the case for a little while and is a big reason with the O struggles.

Thursday injury report per ESPN.com:

The Packers are now up to 15 players on the injury report with the addition of WR James Jones (quad). However, only OLB Mike Neal (hip) did not practice.
