Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's pre-practice press conference Monday:
- (On Linsley and Bulaga) Both did what asked to do. We'll get into heavier loads. We'll get a better idea. They need to be able to put their foot in the ground and explode.
- (On Linsley starting) We'll see how the week goes.
- (On Abbrederis) He did everything. He's looking good.
- (On Montgomery) He's not making progress. You try to reach different thresholds and he's not getting there.
- (On message to team) There's key things you focus on when you've had success. But just because you've had it doesn't mean it's going to happen again. We've talked about direct communication. I'm direct and honest about things we're doing well. We've looked at every correction. You learn from those experiences and you continue to work. Our players dealing with when lose, you have conversations about what happened the week before. We have that responsibility. Our fans know we're working and we're preparing for Detroit. It's my job to keep them focused.
- (On four straight division games) We knew it would be a challenge. It definitely heightens the challenge. Not a fan of Thursday to Thursday, but both teams are going through it. That's the beauty of the NFL, challenges come in different forms.
- (On Randall) I'll know more today.
- (On Quarless) He will start today.
- (On Rollins) Played well. Very aware. I really like the way he's playing.
- (On Nick Perry) He's been great. Been here putting in the extra time.
- (On Quarless returning) I think the position has a lot to do with it. Him coming back is by design. Wanted him to practice in pads. That will benefit him as much as anybody.
- (On Janis kickoffs) Done a really good job. Definitely looking at him this week.
And that's it for McCarthy.
Sounds like Janis! may have won the kickoff return job. Hard to pull him off the field given what he's done the last two games.
I wonder what Randall's status is.
I realize as much as anyone how poorly Adams has been playing but I don't think it's a true indicator of what he can do.
The New England and Dallas game last year are probably a better indicator. He's playing poorly and much of the fans' overall frustration is being directed his way. Don't quite understand why some are completely writing him off as a lost cause.
Sometimes players flash, defenses adjust and the player can't counter. Sometimes players tank and don't recover but I don't think that's Adams.
It would be stupid to write him off, he does need to get on the ball tho, and soon. they need him and are not going anywhere without him. While we are at it JJ needs to step up too, 3 catches on average a game is not enough.
I think JJ is giving about all he has left. His case seems to be - surprise some people and make some plays because everyone thought he was too old and slow, defenses adjust and start paying attention to him again which results in lower production. Then people forget about him and he flashes again until they remember to cover him. Repeat.
Jones is a 4 playing the 3 and some want him to produce as a 2.
Jones has a lot of value against zone coverages because he has some veteran savvy and can find the openings. He's also good on free plays and the sandlot stuff that happens when Rodgers breaks the pocket. His problem is that even an average NFL nickel back (or even a lot of safeties) can stay with him in man to man.
Jones is a 4 playing the 3 and some want him to produce as a 2.
In 2 out of the last 3 games he has had zero catches, both losses, in the win he had 6. In the 4 losses he has had 3 catches. Need more from him and everyone, I'm a tough grader.
#Packers Davante Adams 32 catches on 64 targets this year.. 4th worst catch % of any WR with at least 60 targets.. pic.twitter.com/XKO6scOyeM

Those watching Adams last week were at the game said in many plays he was doing essentially a slow jog through his route and easily got jammed on the line.
Ankle still bothering him? Doesn't like the rain?
Really don't get it.
When he first came back from the injury he didn't look like the same player. He was rounding off his routes and just wasn't up to speed. At the time, you could chalk it up to rust, and maybe still being injured.
Watching him on T-Giving, he has got to still be injured. It's either that, or he completely "forgot" how to be an effective receiver (unlikely), or just lost all his talent for some other reason, like drugs (also unlikely).
Whatever it is, he should have been benched. MM all but admitted as much. Except the only guy who could replace him, Janis, apparently either can't or won't learn the plays.
In the same zip code as Ted Ginn where catching efficiency is concerned.
Just think about that.
@TomSilverstein: #Packers practice: Lang, Bulaga, Goodson not here. Peppers not practicing for 1st time in GB. Randall returns. Perillo rolls ankle, returns.
Well, what do you know.
@WesHod: The #Packers now listing Jeff Janis as their No. 1 kickoff returner on depth chart, ahead of Abbrederis, Hyde and Montgomery.
One less way for Abbrederis to get hurt. Montgomery is pretty much out with the high ankle. Not that he hasn't earned it but he's not exactly beating out a murderer's row.
Hard to believe they trust him to catch the ball and run with it....Or catch the ball and not run with it. Good thing there are not 3 choices
He could "not catch the ball".
Interesting comments regarding Quarless.
Reports are he was due in court today.
Quarless apparently cut a deal.
@ByRyanWood: #Packers TE Andrew Quarless returned to practice Monday, sentenced to 1 year probation on gun charge. https://t.co/Q12sTH1f8p
"... Quarless had plenty on his plate Monday, and not just football. He was sentenced to one year probation, a $1,000 fine and must attend anger management courses after being charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for discharging a firearm in public July 4 in Miami. Itâs unclear whether the NFL will further punish him.
Either way, Quarless is now able to put the incident behind him. Whether heâll play this week remains to be seen.
âIâm happy whenever they put my number up,â Quarless said. âIâm going to make sure Iâm ready. Thatâs how Iâm going to approach it.â ...

So, here's a guy that has never played on STs during college. IQ problem? If Janis has an issue, then it would have to be dedication.
Rodgers was complaining about too many video games being played by younger players (in lieu of studying film). Collinsworth mentioned it during the broadcast. With the way AR ignores Janis on the field, I have to imagine he was one of the guys he was pointing the finger at.
Well, returning kicks doesn't take an Einstein or the confidence of his QB so maybe Janis can continue contributing there. He has looked good so far on KOs. Maybe a little confidence there can roll over into his study habits and route running... as long as he doesn't uss his iPad for games.

Any others?
Several free agents they'll have to make decisions on
1. Mike Daniels
2. Mike Neal
3. BJ Raji
4. Mason Crosby
5. Letroy Guion
6. Nick Perry
7. Don Barclay
8. Casey Hayward
9. James Jones
10. John Kuhn
11. Scott Tolzein
A bunch of contributors, but other than maybe Daniels no one that would be considered a star. They might want Raji back, but someone may overpay him. Crosby will be an interesting one, he's had a great year other than one kick (and hit some mega-pressure attempts in the playoffs last year), but that one kick against the Lions is the type you pay kickers bigger salaries to make and he flat out choked.
That's a pile of a hot garbage outside of Daniels and Crosby.
a fire will be lit under the offense ass- Kindle it.
I will be at the game on Thursday...seemed like a lot better idea when I bought the tickets in August. With their recent success and being a thursday night game, I expect the crowd is going to be well-lubed and LOUD to start the game. Need to withstand initial energy and get the crowd out of it. Will be interesting to see how many Packer fans turn up for this one. Usually a pretty good showing in Detroit, but with the way things are going....
Maybe playing in a dome and wearing his favorite shoes will help Rodgers get back on track. Wouldn't you love to see a game like the 2010 playoff game in Atlanta? For me, that was his real coming out party.
victory in any form will be just fine. it's my belief that the loins are playing confidently right now - the exact opposite of us. if the GBP allows them to grow that confidence in the 1st half it will be hard to climb that mountain.
They Lions are playing like it's 2014. The Packers like 1984.

Aaron isn't wearing those shoes anymore. Just started wearing adidas in recent weeks in repsonse to new endorsement deal.
So THAT's the reason for the drop off in play! Drop the endorsement now!
Hollywood.
Hollywood.
Zurich.

Aaron Rodgers was the best Quarterback in Kern County when wearing his white shoes.
When they activate Quarless, who gets the ax? Monty to IR?
Backman?

i would be totally fine letting all that defense walk. crosby is the only one worth anything.
