Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's pre-practice press conference Monday:

  • (On Linsley and Bulaga) Both did what asked to do. We'll get into heavier loads. We'll get a better idea. They need to be able to put their foot in the ground and explode.
  • (On Linsley starting) We'll see how the week goes.
  • (On Abbrederis) He did everything. He's looking good.
  • (On Montgomery) He's not making progress. You try to reach different thresholds and he's not getting there.
  • (On message to team) There's key things you focus on when you've had success. But just because you've had it doesn't mean it's going to happen again. We've talked about direct communication. I'm direct and honest about things we're doing well. We've looked at every correction. You learn from those experiences and you continue to work. Our players dealing with when lose, you have conversations about what happened the week before. We have that responsibility. Our fans know we're working and we're preparing for Detroit. It's my job to keep them focused.
  • (On four straight division games) We knew it would be a challenge. It definitely heightens the challenge. Not a fan of Thursday to Thursday, but both teams are going through it. That's the beauty of the NFL, challenges come in different forms.
  • (On Randall) I'll know more today.
  • (On Quarless) He will start today.
  • (On Rollins) Played well. Very aware. I really like the way he's playing.
  • (On Nick Perry) He's been great. Been here putting in the extra time.
  • (On Quarless returning) I think the position has a lot to do with it. Him coming back is by design. Wanted him to practice in pads. That will benefit him as much as anybody.
  • (On Janis kickoffs) Done a really good job. Definitely looking at him this week.

And that's it for McCarthy.

The New England and Dallas game last year are probably a better indicator. He's playing poorly and much of the fans' overall frustration is being directed his way. Don't quite understand why some are completely writing him off as a lost cause.

I think JJ is giving about all he has left.  His case seems to be - surprise some people and make some plays because everyone thought he was too old and slow, defenses adjust and start paying attention to him again which results in lower production.  Then people forget about him and he flashes again until they remember to cover him.  Repeat.

When he first came back from the injury he didn't look like the same player.  He was rounding off his routes and just wasn't up to speed.  At the time, you could chalk it up to rust, and maybe still being injured.

Watching him on T-Giving, he has got to still be injured.  It's either that, or he completely "forgot" how to be an effective receiver (unlikely), or just lost all his talent for some other reason, like drugs (also unlikely).

Whatever it is, he should have been benched.  MM all but admitted as much.  Except the only guy who could replace him, Janis, apparently either can't or won't learn the plays.

@ByRyanWood: #Packers TE Andrew Quarless returned to practice Monday, sentenced to 1 year probation on gun charge. https://t.co/Q12sTH1f8p

"... Quarless had plenty on his plate Monday, and not just football. He was sentenced to one year probation, a $1,000 fine and must attend anger management courses after being charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for discharging a firearm in public July 4 in Miami. It’s unclear whether the NFL will further punish him.

Either way, Quarless is now able to put the incident behind him. Whether he’ll play this week remains to be seen.

“I’m happy whenever they put my number up,” Quarless said. “I’m going to make sure I’m ready. That’s how I’m going to approach it.” ...

Any others?

Several free agents they'll have to make decisions on

1. Mike Daniels

2. Mike Neal

3. BJ Raji

4. Mason Crosby

5. Letroy Guion

6. Nick Perry

7. Don Barclay

8. Casey Hayward

9. James Jones

10. John Kuhn

11. Scott Tolzein

A bunch of contributors, but other than maybe Daniels no one that would be considered a star. They might want Raji back, but someone may overpay him. Crosby will be an interesting one, he's had a great year other than one kick (and hit some mega-pressure attempts in the playoffs last year), but that one kick against the Lions is the type you pay kickers bigger salaries to make and he flat out choked.

That's a pile of a hot garbage outside of Daniels and Crosby.

I will be at the game on Thursday...seemed like a lot better idea when I bought the tickets in August.  With their recent success and being a thursday night game, I expect the crowd is going to be well-lubed and LOUD to start the game.  Need to withstand initial energy and get the crowd out of it.  Will be interesting to see how many Packer fans turn up for this one.  Usually a pretty good showing in Detroit, but with the way things are going....

Maybe playing in a dome and wearing his favorite shoes will help Rodgers get back on track.  Wouldn't you love to see a game like the 2010 playoff game in Atlanta?  For me, that was his real coming out party.

Aaron isn't wearing those shoes anymore. Just started wearing adidas in recent weeks in repsonse to new endorsement deal.
