After 4 games in 4 days last weekend I was afraid they would look like this tonight.  Short on shots and no legs on defense.   They should have lost to Perdon't.

This isn't an NBA team on the second half of a back to back. They haven't played in 5 days.

I don't think it's tired legs. They started the game playing tight and not to lose. They also got punched in the mouth and wilted.

The good new is that they return almost everyone next year (except Wahl). We'll probably get another 4th-6th place big 10 finish with a ceiling of a 2nd round NCAA game.

They've won 2 NCAA tourney games and haven't made it past the first weekend of the tourney in the last 7 years. That coincides with when the last guys that played on those final 4 teams (Hayes and Koenig) played their final game.

They are just good enough for Gard to keep his job, but never good enough to be even a contender for the Sweet 16.

Wahl reminds me a lot of Ethan Happ, except Happ was better under the hoop. Still, this is going to be Wahl's last game as a Badger, if, or should I say when, they lose. Not the way he wanted to end his career, I'm sure.

.

Ethan Happ was an NBA level post player. He was a college All-American. He would have played in the NBA in the 80s. Wahl probably shouldn't have been a starter at any point in his career. He was a guy who should have played 15-18 minutes off the bench.

72-61 Bucky loses. What a terrible game by the Badgers! Totally unprepared for this opponent. To think that someone had them ranked #6 in the country, at one point, this season. Still, I'll be back next Fall to cheer them on, again. It will be interesting to see who will be on the squad, next season. Will Essegian stick around, after riding the bench most of this season? How about Storr, or Blackwell? Oh well, that's the way the ball bounces.

As a team, JMU shoots about 38% from 3.  In this game they were barely 30%.  Yet they still won easily against the Badgers.

You can’t expect to beat just about any team when you turn the ball over 20 times in a game.  We’ve seen that at times with Wisconsin.

James Madison is a good team but man, if you’d told me Tyler Wahl was literally a non factor in this game I wouldn’t have believed you.

I've only watched a handful of games this year, but my family (who watches most games) have raved about Storr being a future NBA-level player all year.

He looked like the typical player Wisconsin gets last night - with a ceiling of being a decent mid-level Euro league player. When the game gets physical or the role players struggle, the "star" is supposed to keep them in it, and he couldn't do it.

Klesmit (who played on an AAU team with my nephew in high school - so I'm biased) was the only guy playing last night that looked like the moment wasn't too big for him - and he didn't get it going until the second half.

Extend Gard

There are better coaches out there, but there is probably an 80% chance the guy you replace him with will be no better or worse.

I'm not sure athletic directors know how to judge coaches in the NIL era. Calipari has been essentially running an NIL program for well over a decade and Kentucky just got beat by a guy who is 24 years old, looks like he's 40, and that will be playing in a rec league a year from now.

You could argue Gard played the NIL/portal game very well this year. If they didn't get Storr from the portal, they probably don't even win 15 games this year.

Had 4 days to prepare, looked really unprepared.  I know they took a beating in the B10T, but I didn't expect this horrible of a showing.

I assume Storr and Gus are gone, along with Wahl.  I've been supportive of Gard, but the two thirds of his coaching resume ("his guys") has been a let down.

I got your new coach for ya

Don't know how you can say that. NBA guys are men, these Badgers were boys. Bad lazy passes, shot shots on FT and FG,  committing fouls because not moving quick enough are all signs of a tired team.   Yes they may have been tight, but they started many games that way and were able to come back.  Not last night because they were drained physically and mentally.

After a bit of cool down….the Badgers seemed slow handed, it seemed JMU got every loose ball after forcing those loose balls, the refs let them play, plenty of fouls not called on JMU but JMU noted the refs letting them play and they did, seemed Bucky never realized that.  Crowl was doubled teamed when catching the ball and he never seemed comfortable as to what to do with it, guys did not get open to receive a pass.

IMO JMU played real well on D not so much on O and still dominated this game. How many. Badgers get substantial minutes on JMU?

PS…who is this Gus guy I keep hearing about, is he real, I have never seen him.

Go Marquette and hope for many more close finishes and upsets.

It’s been sort of story under Gard.  Start the season very well, then fade a bit, then come alive in the BT tournament and they get bounced in round 1 or 2 of the NCAAs.

You can certainly do worse than Greg Gard, but if the ceiling is Sweet 16 and an occasional BT championship that’s what will happen.

I know I’ve poked fun at him for building a team of try hard guys but at some point you need to emphasize skills and athleticism in your recruiting.  There is no way a team like James Madison should run you out of the gym but they were clearly more talented and more hungry.

So explain Kentucky.  They are one of the most bluebloods out there but have a terrible NCAA record the last few years.  They are 1-3 in the last 3 years out done in one as a #2 and #3 seed.  They recruit great athletes, not try hard guys.  But have not done shit in the last 3 years or even longer.

Were the Badgers seeded too high?  Yes.  The 5 seed was based on the B1G Tournament  and early season success, not the last 6 weeks of season.  Maybe a #7 seed playing a play in team may have been more appropriate.  Would they have fared better, who knows.   But when your bench only scores 7 points and Blackwell averaged almost 9 per game in the season alone you lose.

Kentucky has not been to a Final 4 since they played Wisconsin in 2015 and haven't even been to the Elite since 2019.

These are the players Calipari has had in that stretch. 7 legit NBA all-stars (first 7 on the list) and a bunch of others that would all be, by far, the best player Wisconsin had on their roster post-Final 4 teams other than 2 months of Johnny Davis. Calipari should be in the Final 4 every year. They've had 22 NBA players go there in the last 9 years.

Shai Gilgeous Alexandder

Devin Booker

Jamal Murray

Karl-Anthony Towns

Bam Adebayo

Tyrese Maxey

De'aron Fox

Tyler Herro

Shaedon Sharp

Malik Monk

Immanuel Quickley

Cason Wallace

Keldon Johnson

Willie Cauley-Stein

Trey Lyles

PJ Washington

Kevin Knox

Jarred Vanderbilt

Hamidou Diallo

That's not counting guys like Chris Livingston, the Harrison twins, TyTy Washington, etc. that hang on the fringes of NBA rosters.

The only year Calipari won a title was with this group.

But you're not explaining anything.  Badgers don't win because Gard brings in try hard guys.  Kentucky hasn't won in ages it seems and only recruit NBA level players.    So which is best?

Badgers have had a mix of NBA level players and try hard guys.  Devin Harris, Frank the Tank, Sam Dekker, etc. And they mixed them with guys like Chambliss, Krabbenhoft, Penney and yet still didn't win it all. Is it strictly on luck to win a NCAA Championship?
