But….you know he’s going to protect his $150 million body all year long. I don’t blame him for being pissed about being squeezed in arbitration.

The 2008 Milwaukee Brewers were fighting to get into the playoffs for the first time in 26 years.

Ben Sheets basically pitched until his arm fell off at the end of that year. On September 7th, he threw a 120-pitch 1-0 shutout. On September 11th, he threw 113 pitches. He was already hurt by then. He came back and threw in relief for two games and then had to have elbow surgery in the off-season. The Brewers do not make the post-season without him. Sabathia's run obscures what Sheets also did that year.

After the season, he was a 30 year-old free agent, but was damaged goods. Other starting pitchers that signed in free agency deals in 2008 or 2009 included John Lackey (5 years, 82 million); Randy Wolf (3 years and 30 million to the Brewers); AJ Burnett (4 years, 82 million); Ryan Dempster (4 years, 52 million); Sabathia (7 years, 161 million).

Sheets was better than all of them except Sabathia. If he was remotely close to healthy, he probably gets something like the Burnett deal (around 4 years and 80 million). Instead, he made about 20 million total for the rest of his career (he pitched in 29 games the next 4 years).

I'd take care of myself first also if I was Burnes. I know it's different ownership now, but the Brewers wouldn't even pay for Sheets' elbow surgery in 2008.

They were only $700K apart so it was foolish for the Brewers not to meet Burnes halfway which was probably all he wanted, the Brewers giving in a little. Once it goes to arbitration, and the case is presented, those words can never be taken back. That tells us the brewers will trade Burnes before next season. It was handled very poorly by the Brewers because of the message it sends all players.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Yelich with another RBI and a run scored.  Maybe he is starting to come around.    3-0 Crew!!

I know the season is early but the Brewers are doing exzctly what they need to do to win the division.  Win 2 of 3 at home. Check!  Play .500 on the road. Check!  That gets you 94 wins and 9 times out of 10 that wins the division.

Yelich is having an odd start to the year. He has 17 runs in about 17 and a half games right now.

He is on pace to score about 160 runs and strike out 250 times while walking about 100 times. In other words, in over half his at-bats he doesn't put the ball in play.

160 runs would be among the top 15 seasons all-time. Of course, he won't keep that pace, but it seems like most of the time he gets on base, he scores.
