If the confirmation test is positive he’s out 21 days. That means he misses the next 3 games. Say goodbye to the season if that happens. Hopefully it’s a false positive.
Is Coan healthy and ready to go ? He is 12 and 6 I think few teams have a better back up.
And he evidently was ahead of Mertz before the injury. THe QB guru must think he is OK.

When did 21 days come about? Maybe it is different in Iowa, but you get back to work faster isolating with a positive than you do quarantining with an exposure. Positive test is 10 days, quarantine is 14.

Duration of isolation and precautions
- For most persons with COVID-19 illness, isolation and precautions can generally be discontinued 10 days after symptom onset1 and resolution of fever for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and with improvement of other symptoms.
The Big Ten isn’t following the 10 or 14 day standard. Not sure why, but it’s 21 days.

The RB situation doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in their ability to grind out some of the stereotypical Wisconsin wins.
No. 9 Wisconsin is scheduled to visit Nebraska this week, followed by games against Purdue (home) and No. 13 Michigan (road). SophomoreChase Wolf would likely step in if Mertz has to miss time.

If there is a COVID outbreak among the QBs, it's pretty likely a lot of other players are going to test positive also. How many people did Mertz hand the ball off to on Friday (the day before he tested positive)? How many people did he congratulate after TDs? Assuming the test is confirmed, he was in the huddle calling out plays facing 10 other guys 75 times during a time that he was likely shedding a lot of virus (the fast test picks up viral proteins which means it's active virus). The odds of it just being Mertz and Wolf that test positive are pretty low. The Illini are likely to get some positives as well.
The Big 10 should shut down the Badgers for two weeks at this point (assuming more positive tests happen). If they don't, they are likely to have problems in Nebraska after the Badgers play them in 5 days.
The problem is the Big Ten has boxed themselves in allowing for no flexibility if and when they get a C19 outbreak or spread.
In my view, it’s now become a competitive balance issue if both Mertz and his primary backup can’t go for 3 weeks.
Put it another way, if this were Justin Fields (and not Graham Mertz) testing positive do you not think O$U would not be shouting from the rooftops to find a way to reschedule or allow him to play?
Why this is surprising to anyone I have no idea. Since Labor Day cases have been spiking all around the state including Madison. With no bubble in place it’s a matter of time.
As for Chryst, his comments leave a lot to be desired as well. He’s confident they will play. Quote “I feel confident in everything that is happening now.” Um what?
Really was hoping for a false positive, but no such luck. Second test confirms and he's out for the 21 days.

Well, I think it’s safe to say if he tested positive and it was confirmed there will be other positive cases coming. I highly doubt the team has this situation contained despite Chryst’s duckies and bunnies bullshit. I mean, this has the chance to derail the entire season.
Given the Bucks and Brewers disappointment(s) this year its only fitting we should get kicked in the nads once again.
Oh and one other rant - fuck the Big Ten for putting the Badgers in this situation. Their 21 day standard is complete bullshit. Assuming he wasn’t directly exposed to a positive case (like a roommate) he should be out 10 days from first symptoms or if no symptoms 10 days from the test date.

I support the quarantine of the players I do but 21 days? that is utter and complete B.S. by the Big Ten.

What's Chryst supposed to say? Freak out and have a meltdown of self-pity? If they have enough guys that test negative, they will play and it's his job to get them as ready as he can. It sucks, but that's the reality.
It looks like the Badgers catch a sliver of a break (not much, but trying to be positive). Because they played a Friday evening game and Mertz tested positive the day after on a Saturday, he will likely only miss two games and be back for the Michigan game (which would be 22 days later). If the Badgers would have played a normal Saturday game and he tested positive on a Sunday, he'd have missed 3 games.

NFL & NCAAF will be crowning champs in late Feb/early Mar.
Unless they decide on fewer games. Possible in the NCAA, extremely unlikely in the NFL.
UW’s test positivity rate is close to the threshold that would force the team to stop regular practice and competition for a minimum of seven days and then reassess the situation. If the game is not played, it would be considered a no-contest rather than a forfeit
So if they do play and Danny Vanden Boom gets hurt or God forbid should also test positive then the emergency QB is Garrett Groshek. He was an All State QB and took some snaps last season in the Wildcat formation.

A no-contest. You mean like a Vikings game?
I think it’s a real possibility the Badgers trip that 5% threshold. If 2 guys already came up confirmed positive you know there will be other cases. Even if you try to do all the right things. These are kids that interact with a lot of people so honestly this whole situation is unavoidable.
I’m not annoyed at Mertz or Chryst or the program but the Big Ten and Kevin Warren in particular deserve criticism because they had to know this could happen and there very little wiggle room to address situations when they come up. And they will come up. Not to mention the 21 day standard is just stupid.
What I hope is they extend out the season and allow for rescheduling in certain situations like this. Of course the teams will say they want to play but it needs to be safe and you also need to protect competitive balance.
Oh, and find out who tested Nick Saban and get him on board with the UW program lol.
I agree the Big Ten really screwed this one up in my opinion. They left no wiggle room to play to reschedule games. I would also like to hear the rationale for the 21 day standard. I almost get the feeling that the BIG really didn't want to play the games and would make it as hard as possible to do so.

After this is all over it will be interesting to see how these tests were really implemented. Mullens (the Florida coach) was the guy pleading to pack 90,000 into their stadium just a few days ago before they got the positive tests.
Will we hear stories 10-15 years from now about how some of these programs gamed the system to make sure they didn't ever have to deal with missing practices, etc.? Orgeron at LSU has made some comments that would make me suspicious.
I don't have a sense for whether these medical testing personnel operate independently from the football staff.

Nope and I bet they won't down the line either. Michigan, I also will be curious down the line when the dust settles (and it will one day) if the SEC teams gamed the system or were willing to take the chance on playing. I think the answer is somewhere in between. I am really starting to think with teams it all comes down to who is willing to take the chance of being liable and sued or willing to take the chance.
The Dodgers pulled their best hitter in the 6th inning due to a positive COVID test. IOW, whatever these guys are going to get away with to win, they’ll do it.
Then there are those that “do the right thing” and report it. Are they suckers? The SEC knows the game... they know it and they rely on others not to or refuse to play.

LSU game canceled and moved to December...SEC gave themselves more wiggle room than Big Ten did.
Yeah I have no confidence schools like Floriduh or L$U are acting above board but honestly I’m disappointed with Paul Chryst. When Barry Alvarez sounds like a rational and logical person that says a lot about the head coach.
I think Chryst is really smart BTW and a good coach but JFC keep him away from the microphone and the press. He came away looking and sounding really stupid with the C19 related crap. Him testing positive doesn’t help matters.
The real issue still remains the Big Ten conference and how they set this all up.
I think a lot of the B1G rules as for how many days and how many players was to get the B1G Presidents to allow football. The presidents were still against it but with coach pressure they relented and allowed football to happen with the current rules. As for the 21 days it is my understanding they want players to fully recover and then undergo the myocarditis tests to see if there is any heart damage.
