Why am I not surprised? Howard’s always acted like that, all the way back to his playing days.

Howard's excuse last year when he went after Turgeon was the following (after he charged into the Maryland coaching box from the other side of the court and Turgeon told him to get back to his own bench).

“...I was raised by my grandmother and also by Chicago. When guys charge you, it’s time to defend yourself.”

Juwan Howard is now 49 years old and made 150 million in the NBA. Age and money don't buy maturity.

Why did Michigan put on a full court press on the Badger bench players?  I think that is what Gard was asking Howard.  I'd take a TO too to get my guys ready.

Exactly. Those walk-on guys work hard for years and then Howard tries to embarrass them by leaving on the press with at least one starter in. Good for Gard for taking a timeout and letting them succeed in breaking the press. He could have called the timeout, put Johnny Davis back in, and then tried to set him up for a windmill dunk. But Gard is too mature for that.

Observations from the dust up and press conferences:

Howard says he’s upset about the time out with “3 or 4” seconds left. There were 15. He either doesn’t know the difference between the shot clock and game clock or he is a liar.

Howard says his team was not pressing. They were in their typical man to man pressure defense. Huh? Everyone knows they were playing full court defense. Gard doesn’t take the timeout if they drop back to mid court. He either doesn’t understand defense or he is a liar.

Howard says that he felt someone touching him on the chest before he threw the punch at Krabby. Watching the video, he seems to be so far away from any Badger player or coach that none of them could touch him. Either he can’t tell his own people from Badger people, or Krabbenhoff has 6 ft arms that can pass through matter, or he is a liar.

Howard didn’t offer any sort of apology. Either he is a complete jerk or he is a complete jerk.

Gard’s explanation seems reasonable. Resetting the 10 second time to cross mid court makes sense. Gard even quipped that Howard might not know the rule. Either Howard doesn’t know the rules or he is a jerk (The two are not mutually exclusive).

I think Gard handles the press conference really well, especially trying to deflect the attention back to the team and their performance.

I am curious to see how the media runs with this story. So far, they don’t seem to be making Howard the victim but I’m not convinced that won’t change.

I completely forgot about the Mark Turgeon incident.  He’s not exactly known as a fiery, talk shit, instigating type head coach.  Those guys are out there but it’s not him nor is it Gard.

It’s pretty amazing if you think about it but Howard acts like some of these tough guy AAU coaches that threaten and intimidate others and don’t mind mixing it up.  Forget sportsmanship he just acts like a bully asshole and no wonder some parents and coaches in lower levels act like idiots. If it’s good enough for Juwan Howard, it’s OK for them.

If Michigan had any balls they’d fire his ass but that will never happen.   For as unhinged as Bobby Knight was I don’t ever recall him going after another coach like that and this is now the second incident with Howard in a short amount of time.

Talking heads during the Marquette game half time show said Howard had another altercation last year with another coach, (I think they said),  but with him trying to slap Krabby, that IS GROUNDS FOR SUSPENSION.

Dealt with that BS for years in coaching....up 20 and opposing coach presses your last 5 guys (when he wouldn't dare press your top guys) to try to make the score look closer, you encourage your guys to keep trying to score and he sees it as "unsportsmanlike" ...

Seems pretty cut and dry what happened little bit surprised haven’t seen anything come down yet.   Conspiracy thinking is they must really be looking at tape to see what any punishment should come UW way.  From what I saw only number 0 threw a punch in the Badgers side.

Something I'd like to see Howard answer. Really disappointed in seeing some people attempt to defend what he did and assign blame to Gard.

Gard does share some responsibility in it . When he saw Howard's emotional state, no matter that it was unjustified, he should have just let him walk by and not stopped him to engage. I know his story is that he was trying to explain about the 10 second rule, but clearly his body language was aggressive in response to Howard's anger. I've spent a lifetime deescalating emotionally charged people ... if you show anger / emotion you only escalate them. Of course in the heat of battle that is difficult to do, especially if that isn't your role.

I haven't Zaprudered the shared video clips, but I think the Gard blame is based on Gard touching Howard's right elbow as they met in the line.

To me, I see that 1 of 2 ways.

a) Gard touching Howard's elbow as one might to ensure a solid handshake... so as to not miss - somewhat reasonable in a crowded area and while moving

b) Gard touching Howard's elbow to get his attention so that he can explain the reason for the timeout.

b) seems to be what Gard was doing based on post game comments

a) is not too different from how they've met each other at previous games based on some additional clips floating around.

Regardless, I didn't see any action from Gard to instigate Howard grabbing a handful of Gard's shirt... and I can't find justification for the slap/punch.

Unwritten rules are so stupid anyway.

Both guys violated “the code” lol

So let’s go ahead and throw the hands?

The problem is some wannabee coaches out there will see this and think it’s OK behavior.  There’s already enough slime and instigating and shit talking in youth basketball.  No need to up the ante and start getting punchy.

He already lied about it with a denial. We are all victims these days.

If you look at Twitter right now, a majority of black media members are defending him claiming that Gard invaded his personal space.

As a black man i can explain this with one word. IDIOCY! We are not animals. We can choose to make decisions even in the heat of the moment. This defense of Howard is fucking inexcusable. This is not a race issue. It is a stupidity issue.

This suspension does not include the Big Ten tournament or any other postseason games.

The conference also announced that Michigan forwards Moussa Diabate and Terrance Williams II would be suspended one game.

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard was also fined $10,000 and Wisconsin guard Jahcobi Neath has been suspended one game.

Kinda shocked Gard got the 10,000 fine.

Would want to know exactly why. If it's for grabbing his arm, there were dozens of examples posted on Twitter yesterday of coaches grabbing the other coach's forearm during the handshake line to get their attention to talk.

Howard also had that bizarre interference last week against Iowa. It's a long season, I guess many  weird things can happen, but he really has some impulse control issues. Michigan has talent, the big ten is a tough conference, but 14-11 is the real reason Howard was so upset..that and a game plan that stopped getting the ball inside where Wisconsin struggled to stop Dickinson.

$10,000 might not take food off of Gard's table, but that will have a bigger impact than the $180,000 that Howard will lose. Stopping people in a handshake line doesn't seem to be intimidating or instigating.

You see coaches extend their right hand and grab the elbow area of the  arm  of the opposing coach all the time.  It makes it more personal than just a handshake and even shows respet IMHO.  Why Howard went berzerk is unbelieveable.   If he didn't want Gard to call a T O he should have called off the press.  He still has not answered why he put a press on with the score so lopsided.  And he never will.  He is a turd.

Listening to the Illinois- Michigan game today with Bill Raftery doing the color. The announcers mentioned the brouhaha involving Howard punching Krabbenhoft. Sounded like Raftery was blaming the use of the hand shake line for Howard's behavior. Time to hang it up, Bill?

Some apology their Coach Howard.  Wants to say he’s not going to talk about excuses but then lists off the “offensive atrocities” UW did never not once acknowledging that he still had the press on. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️
