As I was looking through our list of future free agents, I noticed there are some big ones coming up soon. Last report I saw said we have a little over 11 million in cap space right now, so we have the money to throw some up-front money at guys.

Who gets priority? Greg Jennings and TJ Lang are going to be free agents after this season. Lang has no back-up right now and we're going to also be losing Donald Driver next offseason so if we lost Jennings we would be down to Nelson, Jones, and Cobb. I saw one article, I think it was Packer Update, saying they didn't think the Packers would give Lang a bunch of money because Thompson wouldn't want 2 high paid Guards.

Then again, Thompson will have to pinch his pennies next offseason if he wants to re-sign some of the talent that will be in contract years next year. It wouldn't be unheard of for a guy like Clay Matthews or BJ Raji to hold out rather than play on 1 year deals. You solve that by re-signing them early. We will be in the same Finley drama next offseason that we were this offseason if we don't re-sign him early. And what about Johnny Kuhn, if that guy holds out then we are screwed!

My opinion on the order of importance:

Re-sign Mid-season:
1. Jennings - He's a great player we don't have an adequate replacement right now
2. CM3 - Reliable and productive and, like Aaron Rodgers, won't make ridiculous demands IMO

Re-sign 2013 offseason:
3. TJ Lang - Wait and see if he truly is a starting Guard or just a 1 year wonder
4. B.J. Raji - I anticipate him wanting a contract before training camp
5. Morgan Burnett - See how 2012 goes and see how our other Safetys progress

Re-sign 2013 mid-season:
6. James Starks - Wait to answer questions about health
7. John Kuhn - See if you can find a replacement but I bet you can't

Wait. What?

If what you're saying is we can afford to lose Jennings more than Lang based on the respective depth of each player's position, sure, I can see where you're coming from. Greg Jennings is a special player, though. One that I don't think TT would want to let walk just yet. He has at least a few productive seasons left in him.

Lang shows promise, but I don't know if we can identify him as one of the best guards in the business. Jennings can be identified as among the best at his position.

I chose Clay. Out of that whole group, I think he's got the most "special" in him by a wide margin.

Agreed. Since he's not due to hit free agency until 2014, I still say Jennings is the #1 priority right now, however. If both were due up at the same time, Clay would need to be addressed first.
I don't think Rodgers, Jennings or Matthews value will leap up too much too soon- they are already elite players at their positions and will be paid accordingly

Lang on the other hand is worth locking up now, before his value jumps up much more. Given his ability to play Tackle or Guard, his price will only go up if he has another top- notch season

That's the only reason I push for him first; ease of completing the deal
I'm going through the WR's in the league and I can honestly only come up with two who are clearly better than Jennings - Megatron, who IMHO is the best WR in the game right now, and Fitzgerald. I'd probably take Andre Johnson over Jennings too, but only if he was healthy, which is a big if. The only other guys who would even deserve to be in the debate would be Roddy White and Welker. I'd take Jennings in that debate and feel good about it.
