Dateline New York City

in a press release issued Sunday afternoon, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell once again clarified the new roughing the passer rule. In the statement Goodell states “We the NFL have decided to take all ambiguity out of the roughing the passer call.  From now on the rule will officially be what most have suspected it to be so far this season.  Officially, from this point forward all roughing the passer calls will simply be up to what the official wants to call.  They can use whatever criteria they choose.  Possible examples could be: not liking a player or team, trying to make the game more interesting, trying to control the outcome of the game, or simply feeling that they have not gotten enough air time during the broadcast.  Furthermore , the NFL will completely back the officials on all calls or no calls; making up whatever interpretation is needed to verify the officials decision, no matter how blatantly out of line it is.  We hope this decision will eliminate any doubt or questions about interpretations of the rule in question.  Enjoy everyone.”

Speaking of this, I just read the actual rule, and it says "when the quarterback is in a defenseless position" like throwing the football, etc.  Can they rule that a QB is always in a defenseless position?

I always thought roughing the passer was after the QB threw a pass, otherwise it would be ruled "unnecessary roughness".

I’ve got your press release NFLFU greedy fukks

You are bleeding fans left and right.  You continue to slow down games and make them virtually unwatchable with all the penalties and reviews.

Even better, the officiating is now calling into question the integrity of the league. So much for “protecting the shield”

Got an e-mail from NFL game pass asking me to sign up. I noticed a reply button on the e-mail.

Here was my reply:

Who in hell wants to watch the NFL anymore. The roughing the passer rule is a disaster. Unwatchable.

So sick of debating this crap.

How is this in any way amusing or entertaining?

If you're implying there's nothing to debate- I agree. When the league leaves its stain like they have so often, it sours the game, win or lose. It kinda sucks because usually I'm willing to play along at least until midseason. Wait, maybe I should look at this as a positive. Frees up time on a Sunday.

I think some ppl just need to vent or make some light of such a sh***y situation. There really is no silver lining in any of this. The profit margin runs the show now.

Here how much if a farce this had become. A good friend of mine a college coach in fact says that because Rogers “stepped up” in the pocket the way was tackled or suplexed was perfectly lethal as he was a runner and the protection rules applied. My brother in law another coach at a different university disagreed. So yes coaches can’t even figure this 💩 out how are the players.

I would guess there are going to be opposing views. But once we reach that point where every team has been stained by this, the only question left will be the same one Clay's making. What am I supposed to do? Now that they had Hochuli double down, this issue isn't going anywhere any time soon.

I loved watching the NFL (and especially the Packers) for over 40 years but all good things must come to an end. It actually feels good to stop caring about something I had no control over anyways.

The apparent emphasis, as I see it, is to find enough criteria to justify a PF/RTP call, NOT protecting the QB. It's like there is a scramble drill to go through as soon as the flag is thrown to find enough "right" about the call to make it justifiable.

The rules that have been made/modified regarding QB or 'defenseless player' hits have been baloney since their inception, but since it's likely we'll have to live with them in some form or another, here's my take:

Since the refs can make a judgement in real-time if a tackle or hit defines some criteria or another, they can damn sure make a judgement about intent.

It's not hard to see which hits are made to intentionally hurt, and which ones are football plays. Hitting a QB long after he has gotten rid of the ball, driving him into the ground as you are grinding your helmet into his chest is a penalty.
Flattening a QB with a textbook tackle is not.

The league doubled down on replacement officiating until they got egg on their faces with the Fail Mary play.

If fans become so disgruntled they turn the channel or stop watching you know damn well they will do something about it. It has nothing to do with player safety.  They just don’t want to see the QBs take hits and risk getting hurt thus leading to bad matchups and lower ratings.

As Florio pointed out, what’s ironic is that most of these QB injuries aren’t happening in the pocket getting hit by defenders.  It’s when they escape or try to pick up additional yards on the ground that bad things tend to happen.

Perhaps what that should do is outlaw hits in the pocket, but QBs cannot go past the LOS or they get penalized for being downfield.  Think about that for a minute!  It might actually happen.  The league is moving toward QBs being treated like punters or kickers where they can’t be touched at all.  IMO that’s not football.  The fantasy geeks will love it but it’s not football without defense and hitting.

But the problem is they are trying to get away from the "textbook tackle" on the QB.  That's not by mistake.  The new emphasis has nothing to do with intent.  It has to do with limiting the contact for the highest paid player on the team.

this is what we've come to.  I would coach Clay and the rest to run right up to QBs and hug them until the whistle blows.  and that definitely blows.  FTNFL, NFLFU, NFL - Not For Long (will I continue to watch this ****show of yours)

Might as well throw a folding chair in to the field and hit the QB with it if you're going to be penalized!

I would absolutely keep driving QB's into the ground until they either wave the white flag or get knocked out of the game. Might as well get your money worth if you're getting a flag anyway

Put a couple flags with a red jersey on 'em - Game is great!

I would really like to see an entire team "retire" - that would be awesome - I would definitely pay to see that

Yup, times have changed.  Players, coaches and GM's need to adjust.  Looks to me that  the Clay M type is becoming obsolete, no need to draft that type of player anymore or pay them big money.

With the QB no longer fearing getting hit teams are going to need more CB/safety hibreds. Coverage, breaking on the ball and tackling before YAC will be ever more important.  I can see 3 or 4 down lineman stuffing running lanes and the rest of the D arranged per the down, distance and opponent.

Oh, we fans will need to adjust also or don't watch.
