Not a particularly optimistic assessment for Thursday night from the head coach.

Could be trouble in the meeting room.

Draft TJ Watt like 95% of GMs would have done and who knows.

I would have loved Eric Kendricks in the 2015 draft to fill our never ending hole at ILB, but Ted knew it was better to draft a Safety and convert him to CB.

Not the Wizard's fault that Damarious Randall didn't turn out in Green Bay ... or Cleveland ... or Oakland, just bad coaching.

I absolutely believe coaches need to elevate players and considering the lack of energy that's on Pettine.  Not sure how you overcome the sheer pile of garbage in the middle of the defense.

Our 3 best defensive players are Z. Smith, Clark, and Alexander. They HAVE to make plays ....Alexander didn't get many opportunities and Smith & Clark did not impact the game.

Clark was constantly double-teamed. He's supposed to command those to let other guys make plays.

5-2 teams with SB aspirations to panic fire their DC after 7 weeks. Pettine isn’t going anywhere until after the season. We’re 5-2 for a reason, they just need to get their shit together and rebuild some confidence. They were riding high as #1 in every pundits power rankings, they got smacked around by TB, Houston is too sad of a sack to build confidence against, and MIN smacked them again. Excising some demons against SF would go a long way IMO.

Biggest negative is we now have 2 conference losses. That will make a difference come playoffs.

This team is a finesse team that would be better in a dome anyway.

If the Niners smack them around again with a bunch of guys out then Pettine could be in trouble with the mini-bye after the Thursday game.

If you were trying to make cousins win it, why wouldn't you dare him with 8 (at least) in the box against cook????? Yet pettine has the DL in 2 or 3 man stunts????

P. Smith as a deep CB on an island????? Common man!

I think he will be around to the end of the year.  I just don't see them making a change at this point of the season.

Anyhow the positives:  its over

Negatives?  as usual in a loss its the defense with horrible tackling, soft scheme, and just not physical.

@Fandame posted:

If Clark is eating up two blockers, the Z should have been more present in this game. He was pretty quiet and, if I'm not mistaken, got taken to the cleaners on some screen plays.

Not too hard to account for Z when every other player up front doesn't need to be accounted for.  This is another reason why you put P IN THE FRONT 7 AND RUSHING THE PASSER.

Well when Cook is whipping you all over the field then you need to position key pieces everywhere! Could we coax BJ Raji out of retirement to play Nickel for us? 😂

I bet Howard Greene would be an upgrade for Josh Jackson.

This is the dumbest fucking shit.  Isn't that why they have a flood of DBs every year?

The best part is that when Smith got split out when Cook left the backfield Alexander made him switch with him so that Jaire was covering Cook and Smith went wide to the top of the screen. Then about 5 seconds later, they switched back. Both players knew they were screwed if Cousins went to whoever Smith was covering. The Vikings ran a play to the other side of the field, but talk about a hole in your scheme.

With this defense the game was lost at the coin toss. Tied at half, advantage goes to the vikings

Especially when we were trading TDs with them in the 1st half and then they got the ball first in the 2nd half. I did, however, feel we had a chance of winning in the final minutes, when the vikings had to punt and gave Rodgers the ball back. Hopefully, Gute will address our defense, now. Pettine won't see next season in GB and maybe not the end of this season, in GB. I'd line up Malik Taylor, as our #2 WR, until Lazard comes back. ESB needs more snaps to get back in playing form.

+ 7 games in and the Pack is 5-2!

+ 17, 12, 23, 97 (doubled all day)

+ ALL PRO 23 owned Justin Jefferson- four targets for only 26 yards with none of those going for a first-down.

- Kamal Martin finished with one stop

- Huge losses against smash mouth teams

- lost playoffs #1 seed

+ Realizing gutenuts 2019 and 2020 drafts are busts. So he might finally hire some D scouts

We could have ended the vikings season, with a win, on Sunday. Instead, because the vikings won, announcer Moose Johnson gets to tell us things like "with this win, the vikings can look to the play offs..." I just about barfed, and I woke up this AM with a horrible taste in my mouth, so maybe I did. I'd better check my pillow.

+ Tonyan continues to be a solid TE for us.

+Sternberger made a few catches for us, as well.

+ Our makeshift O Line did okay protecting Rodgers.

- We lost to the last place team in the NFC North.

-Our run defense is nonexistent, and showed the League just that, and in time for the 49ers game.

-Time to think about dumping underperforming players. Decisions will be made that will hurt Gute's reputation.

_ The Packers did not seem to not have any pride, in this game. They allowed Cook to do a Lambeau leap. Someone should have ripped him down from that wall. At least, we did not have to listen to that damn horn.

min getting to the playoffs would not be the worst thing.  They won't get far and their draft position would suffer for it.  They're rebuilding and need an infusion of talent despite what we saw yesterday.

Cousins only attempted throwing 14 times. Packers came into the game wanting to make Cousins beat them and failed spectacularly.

I also don't think Cousins threw more than 2-3 passes that were completed past the first down marker all day. Two key plays were the Alexander DPI (the correct call since he wrapped his arms around him) and the Josh Jackson DPI (very questionable but Jackson's reputation probably contributed). Other than that I think every other play was a short crossing route, screen, or a route in the middle of the field. I've listed the key plays on the 4 drives below which were 6 throws for 109 yards. None of the throws were hard and could have been made by any QB in the league. Not a single one of these plays involved a pass more than 5 yards past the LOS.  Other than these plays, Cousins completed 5 passes on 8 attempts for 51 yards.

The key completions were as follows. You could argue that Pettine's worst schematic decisions were on the plays that he played soft coverage that allowed the Vikings to turn a 2nd and 19 into a 4th and 1. Otherwise, the Vikings isolated players against specific Packer personnel and their guys were just better.

1. 3rd & 8 at GB 34. First TD drive. A dump down that goes for 13.

(1:33 - 1st) (Shotgun) K.Cousins pass short right to D.Cook to GB 21 for 13 yards (A.Amos).

2. 2nd and 19 at the GB 41 after the Lowry gift sack. 2nd TD drive.

  • 2:56-2nd Cousins short pass to Jefferson who turns a 5 yard completion into a 12 yard gain.
  • 3rd & 7 at GB 29

    (2:17 - 2nd) (Shotgun) K.Cousins pass short left to A.Thielen to GB 23 for 6 yards (J.Alexander).

3. 3rd & 8 at GB 46. Third TD Drive. Chandon Sullivan gets smoked and Beebe is open by at least 10 yards. Easy throw and YAC. The two DPI penalties happened after this completion on the same drive.

(13:46 - 3rd) (Shotgun) K.Cousins pass short middle to C.Beebe pushed ob at GB 30 for 16 yards (C.Sullivan).

4. 3rd & 9 at 50. 4th TD Drive. The screen which I think Pettine had a decent scheme against, but nobody made a play. Vernon Scott missed a tackle 20 yards downfield that ruptured the play.

(5:52 - 3rd) Dalvin Cook 50 Yd pass from Kirk Cousins (Dan Bailey Kick)

Earlier in this drive, the Vikings opened with a pass to Thielen about 5 yards downfield and then he broke a couple of tackles to pick up 12.

The Packers were now down 28-14 even though the Packer offense had played almost perfectly for 2.5 quarters until the drive before this. They had first and 10 at the Viking 37 when Ervin drops a jet sweep on first down, there is an incompletion to Ervin on second down on a poor Rodgers pass that might have been thrown into the ground on purpose because the screen was going to lose yardage anyway, and then the two ESB plays that could have been made but weren't.

The good -

Tonyan is turning into a legit weapon that teams have to account for.  Assuming Aaron Jones and Lazard come back and stay healthy that’s still a decent core of players.

I also think Martin and Barnes showed some grit and toughness at LB so hope they can build off of that.

The bad -

Too many goddamn penalties.  Little to no pass rush.   Pettine gameplan was awful.  More injuries and could someone please put out an APB for Savage and Preston Smith?

The ugly -

Josh Jackson just sucks.  I was totally wrong about the guy.  It has to be mental or motivation with the guy and his effort on the PAT made me want to throw my TV out the window.

Will the real Rashaun Gary please show up?   He doesn’t have to be an All Pro but damn he’s invisible out there.

The receiving group leaves a lot to be desired.  What else is new.

Yeah, OK, Poutine needs to go...

BUT, the personnel decisions on the defensive side...someone needs to be held accountable...Lowry, Lancaster, MAdams, Burks, Josh Jackson, etc.

Buddy Ryan isn't suddenly going to turn Lowry into Reggie White or Burks into Mike Singletary.

The defense is brokedick for more reasons than just "Pettine doesn't know what he's doing."

Lots of talk about Preston being used incorrectly but no mention of his pathetic performance in run D.   Most of the big chunk run plays came when Preston got absolutely man handled by the TE creating huge lanes.

He's been horrible this year and it's been documented via statistics that, no, he is not dropping into coverage more than he did last year.   That's fucking fake news, he just isn't making plays.

It's time for the 12th overall pick to sick or swim and take those snaps.

"According to Pro Football Focus, Preston Smith was in coverage for 15 percent of his snaps in 2019. This season, that percentage is up to 17.5. Clearly not enough to offer a reasonable explanation."

Right, lining up directly at CB vs. dropping into coverage is exactly the same.

P hasn't been great but you didn't sign the guy to drop into coverage.  Of course they don't have anyone else because the LB depth fucking sucks along with the DT starters/depth/rotation.

That's 2 plays.   2 inexcusable calls / schemes by AGM.    It does not explain his lack of production the other 200 snaps.

Hell, the more I think about it, might as well split him out wide.   He sure as hell ain't getting home on a pass rush or filling a lane in run D.   /s

+  the Vikings with Cook versus the Packers without Jones and Lazard on such a windy day.......(no califonia dreamin till Thursday) are just better than the Packers....and yet they made it a game and could have won with one additional catch, one additional on target throw and one less penalty: Packers win--they had no business to be in that situation with this defense and yet there they were.

+5-2...and in the division lead....despite having this defense

+ Gute has done a good job with free agents

- Gute has really been spotty with draft picks

-  that defense is bad

So what are the expectations for this team?  If "almost beating min" is a silver lining, I don't want to know what the storm is.  They've been exposed as soft vs the run and vs physicality twice now in 7 games.  Is everybody ok with them winning the division (not a gimme) and then getting pantsed in the playoffs again?

Smith as a CB is JUST STUPID! Who thinks that? Why is he misusing him this year?
