CM3 interview

"This guy's (6-7), 290. I'm 6-4 on a good day and 255," Matthews told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday night during a break from a commercial shoot at his alma mater, USC.

"They're going to double the big guy, and that leaves plenty of opportunities for me. I haven't had too many one-on-one opportunities, and when you do, you're expected to win — at least in our locker room — the majority of the time, because that's supposed to be a mismatch."

from CM3 interview:

Q: It's an interesting time to be an NFC North pass rusher. Peppers goes from the Bears to the Packers. Jared Allen goes from the Vikings to the Bears.

A: I saw something on the Internet: 'Hey, is Clay coming to Minnesota?' No.

In 2009, 2010 and 2011 the Green Bay Packers were number 1  in the entire league in INTs.

Number 1  (3) years in a row . Talk about getting lucky !

In 2012, they dropped to number 10 and in 2013 they fell to # 25

With an influx of talent and the development of youth, these guys need to step up and replace the output of HOF Charles Woodson and All- Pro Nick Collins on the back-end. No easy task, but they've done it before and getting turnovers is what makes this defense hum

Those INT's were the reason I never believed all that bashing of the Packers D until last year. This was a big play defense. Last year's defense was really bad. The injuries didn't help, of course.

The opposing teams' QB rating vs the Packers was often as high as Rodgers vs the opponent in 2013

When a defense makes every QB look as good as Rodgers, its time to make some upgrades/changes.

In 2010 Opponent passer rating was 67, 2013 it was 94. Ouch

Starts with the pass rush. A good stable of pass rushers will make DB's a lot of money. When you're rushing a converted DT and 2 rookies as your primary pass rushers then you're going to make opposing QBs a lot of money. Even a Julius Peppers who is 75% as good as he used to be (his production in 2013 dropped by 25% from his previous career average) is still MUCH better than Andy Mulumba, Mike Neal and Co. So at a minimum we have upgraded our #3 OLB and then getting our regular #1 and #2 (Matthews & Perry) back means our pass rush should be significantly better than it was vs. the 49ers in the playoffs. And again, just to keep , we only lost to that team by 3! And heck, we didn't have a real pass rush for most of the season. I'm not just talking about sack production, I'm talking about consistently pressuring the QB and forcing mistakes. We got sacks, but QBs had very little fear of our pass rush and that led to fewer INTs.

Get a real pass rush going and we will see a magical turnaround from our Safeties. Everyone needs to stay healthy.

I didn't know that. Can you imagine playing against Arod every week? To boot, we only had Arod for half the season. OOF!

Exactly right, GD. That pass rush was BRUTAL.

Great call.

Think back to the SB run....vs Eagles, Matthews terrorized Vick on the opening play and the (edited) Tramon Williams INT sealed it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt130x903Po

vs Atl the next week, Tramon has one pick to stop a drive and another for a TD to end the half. That was the turning point

vs Chicago- Raji INT for a TD and again Shields with a INT to seal the deal

vs Pitt- Collins with the pick 6, Matthews/Pickett with the Spill It ! fumble and recovery and Tramon with the knock down to seal the game

Lots and lots of Big Plays, even Bush had an INT

Super Bowl. Middle 3rd. Pitt driving again after making it 21-17. 3rd and 10 on Packers 29.

Big Ben sacked by Frank Zombo. Pitt misses a 52 yard attempt wide left

Crazy how many huge plays were made by guys that pretty much disappeared after that game.
Only fumble was caused by Clay (spill it Pickett) and recovered by Bishop.

its officially listed as 37 yards. I'd like to start a petition to have Nicks SB pick six changed to 36 yards.

That's an important point. The 2004 Packers defense was ranked #11 in sacks, but they were easily one of the 2-3 worst pass rushing defenses in the league that season. Similar story for last season. They ranked #9 in sacks, but they were rarely within arm's reach of the QB. I just want to see guys who are consistently within arm's reach when the QB still has the ball.

A defense that's been good on the edges will be better this year. Clay, Peppers, Tramon, Shields, Hayward, Perry, Bradford.

The middle has to be better. Trgovac is on notice. He's been handed a load of early draft talent AND a gift in Daniels. No QB likes middle pressure. Don't need 12 sacks from the DL. But they need to press the pocket into the QB's lap. Clay, Peppers and Co. will clean that up. Can't possibly overstate the benefits of Daniels and the effect he should have on Jones, Worthy, Boyd, and Thornton.

I didnt love Burnett saying he's not feeling any additional pressure coming of his 2013 season. If he doesn't realize Hyde or Richardson would love to take his spot and drafting Clinton-Dix aren't red flags then he's going to get lost in the wash. He needs to understand if he doesn't make this work there really is no plan B. He's a good safety. But he can't regress anymore. Maybe a fault on the coaches but he's had it too easy the last 2 years.

Plenty of unknowns with this defense but the holes are being pared down bit by bit with the right mix of young talented competition. The pieces are there to be a good defense.

Is he still playing and available? I always thought he'd look good in green and gold. This team could use his veteran leadership.

I agree on the Burnett quote, and hope Richardson, Hyde and Dix make him see the bench at some point. He got the big contract last year, but in the NFL if you don't earn it constantly you go away or get renegotiated....

Hope he proves me wrong this year, but I've seen nothing from Morgan Burnett up to this point that indicates he's anything other than an average player or worth the generous contract the Packers gave him.

I think Burnett is a good safety that's never been pushed. He'll be given every chance to embrace MM's dedication to improve the defense. He'll be shown the bench if he thinks he's entitled to a starting spot though.

That my friends, is a VERY large human named Josh Boyd

Apparently he's been on the Gilbert Brown "see-food, eat it"  diet

Should you feel the need to run vs the Packers, don't worry.

That feeling will go away soon enough...
