Hey, how about a defense run by Capers and designed by Fritz Shurmur ?

I've been reading some interesting comments around the web and I'll plagiarize them here:

This link talks about Fritz's Eagle 5 LB Defense that he ran with the Rams in the 80s and its perfectly suited to hybrid players like Peppers/Neal/Perry who can play standing up or with a hand in the dirt and both inside & outside rushers

One of the other things this defense allows is to be multiple without needing to substitute - and that neuters the up- tempo offenses who try to catch you in a bad personnel package.

( MM does this all the time on offense)

Hybrid players make it work and Peppers is one of the best candidates for that role. And by having several players capable( Neal, Perry) you aren't handicapped in case of injury.

If you read the article, it allows for a 2-5, 3-4 or 4-3 all with the same players on the field and this gives the defense an advantage. GB now has the horses to run it

The other thing noted is that GB will likely have more 1- gap penetration from the DL to disrupt plays instead of just relying solely on 2- gap Big Guys to keep the LBs clean

Capers tried to stop the run with Big Boys,( Jolly,Raji, Wilson) but they had no pass rush so play action was a killer. Now, if you have more athletic DL, they can attack play action with penetration and that makes it easier on the LBs and DBs.

Last year GB got gashed in the run game playing nickle D, and the base 3-4 offered zero pass rush

So, maybe we see an "old" innovation from Fritz Shurmur to help solve that modern football dilemma.

And one more note - Shurmur often used a Safety as one of his 5 LBs and GB has both Hyde and Richardson available to fill that role while keeping Burnett and HHCD as the traditional Safeties

Unlikely we "see" much in mini camp, but by TC there should be some hints...

They played an amoeba defense where the guys all sort of milled around to keep the offense guessing about who was doing what.

Other teams tried it too, including the Rex's Jets vs Pats. But Brady and Belichick just said ****-q and quick-snapped the ball... catching the defense with their pants to their knees. And that was the end of the amoeba...

They still do the Psycho with one down lineman.
