Except for 1 year there was never too much doubt about the job Mason would do,

MM deserves so much credit for sticking with him. I admittedly was past the point of no return and Crosby went on for the better part of a decade after that rewarding everyone who roots for the green an gold. There's a part of it that has to be internal. If the players are with the guy it makes it easier to see the tough times through.

Does he have a history of hammy issues with the Raiders?

I didn’t make it clear but I was referencing Lloyd's hamstring injury. Should be standard practice to measure the skill player's muscle mass balance. Just hoping we don't get an article after this season that one of his legs has 30% less muscle mass.

Oh crap. Yeah, I know you meant Lloyd. Just getting my new RB's mixed up.

Special teams

Kicker (1): Anders Carlson

Has Greg Joseph made more field goals during camp? Yes. Did his balls look cleaner on Saturday? Yes. But I figure the Packers believe there’s still untapped potential with Carlson and special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia will think he can salvage another Carlson’s career after a rough rookie start. He isn’t too far behind Joseph in what we’ve seen during open practices, either.

Does anybody think Joseph would be signed by another team if Carlson struggles thru week 2 or 3?  I doubt it. There will be quite a few kickers who will be looking for work during the season. The snap and the hold are just as if not more important than the kicker.

Joseph is better than Carlson. Give me the guy who can make extra points and is consistent from the 45 in. The days of long field goals are going away unless it's the end of the game/half. Teams are just going for it on 4th down anymore. Now with the new kickoff rules, it's more important to be directional.

Carlson is so tall and has so many moving parts that I think it's easy for him to get out of whack. Keep Joseph and keep looking.

2023 there were 3 kickers drafted.

Jake Moody from Michigan in R3 by SF

Chad Ryland from Maryland in R4 by NE

Carlson from Auburn in R6 by GB

Looking at all their stats...

Moody was 84% FG, 4/6 from 40-49, 2/3 from 50+ on 25 attempts
Ryland was 64% FG, 5/10 from 40-49, 2/4 from 50+ on 25 attempts
Carlson was 82% FG, 4/8 from 40-49, 3/5 from 50+ on 33 attempts

Moody was 60/61 on XP
Ryland was 24/25 on XP
Carlson was 34/39 on XP

It should be noted, the Pats and the 49ers both had two of the best longsnappers and holders in the league. The Packers did not.

Was it worth spending a 3rd round pick for the Packers to get Moody when Jack Coco was doing the snapping?

Drafting NFL QB isn't an exact science. Drafting a kicker is probably harder. At some point you have to take a risk to get the next Mason Crosby.

Part of the problem is that we don't know enough about how Carlson will react in really big moments. Yes, he missed at SF, but it was his first year, first big game, etc., etc. BUT he does have the bigger leg that someday may turn a sure L into a big W during a really big game.

On the other hand, even as a vet, Joseph will miss at the worst times. He'll miss that almost 35-yarder at SF that ensures a loss, and then the next week win a game from extra-long distance. He's an ulcer producer because you never know when that miss will pop up.

They'll keep Carlson because he has the bigger leg and (so far) the higher ceiling. But he is on a one-year maximum trial.
