Interesting observations.

6 Packer first round picks of the 11 starters on defense - Alexander, Stokes, Gary, Savage, Clark, J. Reed, Q. Walker. The other 5 starters (P. Smith, Amos, D. Campbell, and J. Reed) carry 42 million in cap charges.

On offense, the only Packer first round pick is Rodgers. Lazard and Nihman were UDFAs as was Tonyan (who you assume will eventually be TE#1). Myers was a 2nd rounder. Runyan (6th), Hanson (6th), and Newman (4th) were all mid to late round picks. Cobb, Watkins, and M. Lewis are all "economy-level FAs."   Jones was a 5th but is at 6 million a year now. With Bakhtiari and Jenkins out, outside of Rodgers the entire cap charge this year for the other 9 current offensive starters is roughly 20 million TOTAL.

Invest in QB, RB, and defense (and left tackle) and try to get by with inexpensive guys on the rest of the offense.

I thought Ford had passed up Heflin.

Not sure about that, but I did read a blurb from camp that suggested it

Ford is a HUGE NT type at 338 lbs, so he's 3rd behind Clark and TJ Slaton at 0-tech and 1-tech

Heflin is more of a DE type ( 304 lbs) and would play 3- tech and 5- tech

The Packers drafted Ford with one of their (4) 7th rounders because they knew they'd never get a Florida dude in GB as an UDFA.

On cut- down day - its a real crap shoot that Ford makes it thru to PS; so if you want to keep him, might have to roster him. And with all of the PUPsters, it might work out. Flip side is 3rd string NTs are a tough sell on the 53 given how little they'd actually play.

The unknown, is how much Barry wants Kenny Clark at 3-tech in 2022.
IF the answer is " a lot" then Ford has more value. Generally speaking, very few NTs have much to offer in the pass rush dept. - but Kenny does. ( Raji too)
Which is why GB keeps Clark there over some the behemoth's like Ford.

for reference - chart below shows the "tech" alignments on the DL

.
I sure hope Gute saw this presser today.
If Winfree gets kumerowed on cut down day - there's gonna be hell to pay

β€œI will say, between 88 and 87, there’s been a lot of positive things that make you feel good about the depth we could have in that (WR) room.”

The way they present those charts is confusing.
You have to read left to right all the way across a row. Then drop down and read left to right across the next row

So Goodson is 4th behind Patrick Taylor -  and that makes more sense given their pedigrees.

So you read left to right, then drop to the next line and read left to right again.

Thanks Satori. I don’t think I would have ever figured that out. It’s almost like it’s text on a page that you read every day!

Incredible insight. You’re a very useful poster.

Ok, I realize that I am no coach or scout. But I can’t figure out why Jake Hanson is getting snaps with the ones. The only reason I can think of is because he might be the backup center. Otherwise I just don’t see it. I hate to dump on a guy without seeing the actual practices. But what I saw on family night and the preseason game as well as practice reports has me scratching my head.

Ok, I realize that I am no coach or scout. But I can’t figure out why Jake Hanson is getting snaps with the ones.

During preseason, the coaches want to get film on each guy in a variety of positions - that gives the coaches teaching points AND by putting him with the ones- they can eliminate the other variables.

If he gets snaps with the ones, then the other guys aren't effing up as much and the coaches can isolate more on Hanson's skillset. They're auditioning him for the Lucas Patrick role where he covers LG, OC, RG as a back-up on game day.

My guess is that GB will activate 8 OL on gamedays; the starters + 3 guys who can cover all the other spots. Nijman and Zach Tom are the back-up OTs and GB needs somebody to cover the 3 IOL spots. I believe that's why they are looking at Hanson with the ones.

What if the 2022 Packers OL went like this :

Bahk, JRJ, Myers, Jenkins, Tom

# 50 Zach Tom has been getting a lot of strokes from coaches the past few days and his play at RT has been pretty damn good per PFF  ( vs back ups)

That might turn out to be our best 5 and it pushes Newman to the bench
(which should delight some of you )

That lineup really solidifies the interior with stud Jenkins at RG

( Tom doesn't appear to be an OG candidate)

A lot of people are clamoring over the perceived need to sign OBJ. My 2cents is that if we are looking for a replacement in the slot for Amari (and maybe Cobb) Why not Cole Beasley? Yes, his is in his early thirties, but he is smart, tough, sure handed and (unlike OBJ) is available now. He can build a trust factor quickly with Aaron and give him a quick, safe outlet when our line is breaking down.

Because they aren’t very good?

I think the WRs they have now have the capability of being good. Watson and Doubs have a lot more upside than some of the previous guys like Janis, Abbrederis, and Jarrett Boykins.

If you were doing things independent of how Rodgers feels and locker room considerations, guys like Cobb, M. Lewis, (and maybe Watkins) should not be taking up roster spots. They aren't good enough at this point in their careers to get you over the top in the playoffs and they are taking snaps from guys that can get a lot better.
