The Commish was extreme, but let's be honest, Jolly just kept on messing up and made it easy for the commish to come down hard on him. I didn't get the feeling Jolly really fought all that hard to get back into the league until recently.

I hope the light has come on for Jolly and he realizes just how much of his career he pissed away and how fortunate he is to get this 2nd chance. He is a rare talent, and hopefully he gives the Pack 1 more good year if not many more.

#Packers practice ends with James Starks fumbling in 11-on-11. At least his second fumble today.

Two ways to look at this. 1. The Packers statement that they have to cause more fumbles is working. 2. Starks wasn't happy with his body of work last year to solidify a spot on the bench.

"Well, we’re going to find out. If an individual can do it, I believe Johnny Jolly is that man. He has the toughness, the drive, the passion. I don’t know off-hand how many players are in our locker room that were teammates with Johnny. He’s definitely someone that you know can do it. But this is more of a question about life and second chances. We feel that he’s gone through the necessary rehabilitation and training to get to this spot. I’m excited to give him this opportunity."

Jolly said he tipped the scales at 340 yesterday, about 10 lbs more than his playing weight.

Packers minicamp: McMillian stands out, Starks works with starters, kicking competition begins

Jerron McMillian is starting to play on instincts.
Yes, it's cliche. Every second-year player will say they're doing less thinking and more reacting. Still, McMillian's play so far in Year 2 supports such rhetoric. During 7-on-7 -- always a pass-happy drill that favors the offense -- McMillian broke on an Aaron Rodgers bullet to tight end Jermichael Finley over the middle for a deflection. During an 11-on-11 segment, he blitzed off the edge for a would-be sack.

Worth noting that Randall Cobb is one of Green Bay's best practice players.
There's a reason Aaron Rodgers is always quick to compliment the wide receiver. Since his first training camp out of the lockout, Cobb has been turning heads at practice. On Tuesday, he had several receptions. Cobb hauled in a deep(ish) ball from Rodgers on a flag route inside the safety and had a pair of touchdowns in red zone work.

McCarthy doesn't talk about injuries during OTA's and minicamp.
But of note, wide receiver Jarrett Boykin did not practice Tuesday. He had suffered an injury during last week's open OTA session. And today, outside linebacker Dezman Moses left the field midway through practice. His calf was wrapped up.

For those asking, Desmond Bishop (hamstring) continued to sit out also, but did do conditioning work off to the side.

The following did not participate: Boykin, Bishop, WR Kevin Dorsey, RB DuJuan Harris, CB Davon House, S Sean Richardson, T J.C. Tretter, T Derek Sherrod, DL Josh Boyd, DL Jerel Worthy. continue

Rookie running backs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin continue to take reps in DuJuan Harris’ absence. Harris is nursing an undisclosed injury.

β€œWe did scheme evaluation. We made tweaks where tweaks needed to be made, regardless of who’s running. It’ll play itself out. Preseason will be critical. It’s great to have the depth. Someone will step up and take control of the deal,” Running Backs Coach Alex Van Pelt said. continue

Packers CB Sam Shields: 'I just have to ball out this year'
jsonline.com

Standing at his locker Tuesday, Sam Shields was honest, direct. The Green Bay Packers cornerback didn't get what he wants. After his third NFL season, Shields was hoping for a long-term contract extension.

And when the Packers refused to budge, the restricted free agent signed his one-year tender.

The payday will have to wait.

"I’m not that guy (who says), β€˜I’m not coming because I didn’t get paid. I need to get paid,'" Shields said. "Business is business. I wanted to get paid β€” it didn’t happen. I came and signed a tender and I’m here now.”

By the sounds of it, the Packers and Shields' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were not seriously close to reaching a long-term deal. Shields said there was "a little progress" when Rosenhaus met with the Packers Monday but "it didn't happen." An extension "was getting there, then it wasn't." Eventually, Shields decided it was best to sign his tender and start practicing after skipping voluntary organized team activities.

Shields is still shooting for a long-term deal.

β€œOh yeah," he said. "That’s one of my goals. It didn’t work out. I signed the tender. I came back to minicamp. If I have a great year this year, it’ll speak for itself right there ...I was really calm with it. I wasn’t like, β€˜Nah, I’m not coming because they’re not paying me.’ It wasn’t that. It’s business. I got here for the minicamp signed and I’m ready to rock and roll."

"It felt good. It felt good signing. I wanted to be back. I was tired of being home. I was home too long. I was just ready to sign the tender. I didn’t get what I wanted. I was like, it’s not going to go that much farther so I might as well sign the tender and get back.”
continue
At least he has some common sense.

Other interesting notes from minicamp practice on Tuesday:

Coleman fumbles snap at goal line, can't have that
β€” Pete Dougherty (@PeteDougherty) June 4, 2013

The B.J. Coleman vs. Graham Harrell competition may come down to who makes less mistakes. Not a promising sign so far.

Jolly's first snap in goal line and he swims right past the guard and into the backfield forcing the QB to scramble.
β€” Zach Heilprin (@ZachHeilprin) June 4, 2013

In order to balance out the the bad news with some good news, Johnny Jolly seems to still have some natural technique along the defensive line.

As of right now would you feel more comfortable with Crosby having a good camp and winning the job or Tavecchio having a good camp and winning the job?

For myself I find it really hard to trust Crosby this year even if he has a great camp. It will be in the back of my head the whole season that he could flake out at any time even if it's just due to some bad luck. I can easily picture him spiraling out of control after what happened last year.

Tavecchio really has to show reliable kickoff ability as well as making FGs though. If he falters at all there he's donesky.
I really like Sam and would love to see him a Packer for a long time... in ways it is easy to see him as an heir apparent for Tramon.

That being said, at times it almost seems like he could carry that cockiness, being from teh YeW that could make you wonder. But then he comes back extremely reasonable and humble when you least expect it.

This is going to be a very intruiging year for the Pack. With all the talent we have, players ready to break out, experienced players who are hungry as hell, and the freaking slew of players to be UFA's next year (Sam included).

I have to wonder.

How much is TT hedging his bets. Which players will he ultimately spend $ on and which players will play out of their mind on a contract year to earn a contract that we cannot match.

TBH, if the trophy comes home again, and the existential play of some result in them leaving GB, I really don't think I will mind.

...

I am fine with whoever does the best, wins the position. The tendency though is that if the veteran is tied, they win. If the kid can kick ass let him have the job, the added bonus being more cap room. I wouldn't think that would play in but who knows.

When it comes to kicker, the same but cheaper may be enough to win the job.

My feelings exactly.
You could get really ballsy and figure no one else would sign Crosby if you cut him, either. If the kid goes pfffft in the regular season you would probably have the opportunity to give Crosby another shot. [/waaaayoutsidethebox]

That's exactly the way I read that article. Thought jumped into my mind that if he gets the contract he may lose his drive, but then he at least said the contract is one of his goals. Hopefully becoming an all-pro is another one.

That he realizes his situation and his leverage at the moment and went back to work without feeling angry puts him ahead of seemingly more than half the players in the league on the common sense grade.

It's going to be a wild ride this year with all the players impressing for contracts and I'd venture a guess that one of them will get the 'out of training camp' contract extension. My money would be on Morgan Burnett right now. He seems ripe for a deal that could provide him financial security and give the Packers very good value. I think those beginning of the year offers really make a player think about risking their health during the season. Fortunes are made and lost in an instant in the NFL. The second contract is the life changer for most of these guys. There's a lot of risk in putting 16-20 NFL games in front of getting it.

Let's look at the Crosby issue from the other side

Do you have confidence in an unknown kicker who has never kicked at Lambeau Field or the NFL ?
Would you espouse choosing your Lambeau Field kicker based on how he did in July/August ?
He grew up in Italy and went to school in Cal- neither a good prep for December on the frozen tundra

I surely understand your lack of faith in Crosby, but I don't understand your leap of faith with Tavecchio

" The left-footed kicker connected on 48 of 64 field goal attempts during his four-year college career (75 percent), including a long of 54 in California."

I also think Crosby brings something to the(teh)table on kickoffs and onsides kicks

Its a tough choice either way...but MM stood by his man and my guess is that confidence will be rewarded in 2013.
quote:

That's because I didn't express faith in Tavecchio. This is more like choosing between spam and slim jims than choosing between steak or lobster. Heck if they're both shaky I wouldn't be surprised if neither is the starter on opening day. They surely couldn't stand by Crosby if he gets the yips in the preseason, could they?
Like I already said;

With this management (and a philosophy I agree with) the tie goes to the Vet.

This will be decided in pre-season. I doubt the cap savings is that signifigant.

I also agree with tit (to which I was implying) that at least one vet will be extended before the season begins. Since we didn't draft a WR I wouldn't be surprised if it was JJ... but he already took one cheap 'to prove himself' contract. If either of the new rooks show themselves a bit, that won't happen.

My call would be on D, since no other O players would really qualify, I just am not sure if McMillan is on his last year, if so, it's a decent choice. I still think it could (duh choice) be Raji. It would save the cap millions.
