Packers OL #1 in Run Blocking

 

I would too. I don't know their % of runs on 3rd and short, so I was jesting about the 25%. Their only excuse for not running it more with the the talent in the backfield and the improvement in blocking on the OL is they love to pass. And that's a sh!tty excuse.

Why do you think that is?  Could it be, perhaps, they feel they have a better chance of converting?  AKA... They have more trust in it.

Not saying they shouldn't because history says they should.  I'm just saying they should give the current team a chance to earn that trust.

Ugh, we need a new coach. No way EDSdoing anything but sucking.

 

Gave it to Lacy on third and three and he got four against the Lions. I just think both MM and AR are going through an adjustment period with the running game and it'll come.

The real question is what they do with Bulaga next year. Do they just cut him and use the money to sign EDS?

OK, you're kidding. 

I guess it is reasonable, 3rd and short, to have the ball in the hands of the best player in the entire NFL's hands.  I can see doing that.  Some conversions running wouldn't hurt my feelings, but the best way for this team to advance the ball is with AR scanning downfield. 

 

 

Agreed. Having the ball in ARs hands on 3rd and 1 makes a lot of sense... just before he hands it to Lacy.

 

 

 

 

I'm excited to hear MM to openly talk about evolving the play calling.  This team is always going to be a passing team but I really hope they find their identity in the run game come playoff time.  

 

I truly believe the ability to grind out yards in tough spots will be incredibly pivotal for this team.  They need to break the one dimensional mold.

So they are coaching to each players strengths?   Meaning you have guards that can play in both schemes but you have a center who is more limited in scheme so you coach to what they can do as a unit?  Crazy!  Who doesn't love context. 

 

That statement alone speaks highly of MM.  That's adaptability.  That's seeing a problem and fixing it.  

 

Speaking of coaches, that whole piece was just chock full of wisdom from Campen.  Outside of the quotes from MM, Clement, Fontenot and Alex freakin' Van Pelt, Campen's wisdom on the subject was fascinating!  Cog. 

 

The numbers and run game look good.   BTW, do olinemen do anything else but run block? 

 

Packers are statistically the 5th most pass happy team in the NFL as measured by passing identity, which takes into account situational play calling (score of the game, etc).

Another thing about the article, now I see why they drafted Tretter over guys like Schwenke as well.  Smart, athletic guy that can help balance the oline as they toggle between schemes.  His background would suggest a ZBS player but his overall size with intelligence makes sense as to why he was tagged a C after playing T in college, particularly for what MM is doing in the run game and for standard pass protection.

In a pre-draft article that McGinn worked on, he interviewed a senior personnel guy from another team to get some insights on what type of players and positions the Packers were likely to target in April.

"They had (Jeff) Saturday and he got replaced. Once they get a guy that can recognize schemes and is highly intelligent, he can play for years in that offense. How good does this player (Evan Dietrich-Smith) have to be? They've always had an athletic guy in there. I don't know where Dietrich-Smith falls on the intelligence. He beat out a savvy veteran. When they had to make a playoff run they were comfortable enough to make that move. That was pretty revealing."

This is one thing I love about the game...  on the surface it looks like it's all about strength and speed, but the intellectual game underneath it is fascinating, from play design, recognition, etc.  Unfortunately, it's also the area that is least accessible to fans.

Campen, all over it.  Shows what a innovator, dare I say visionary coach he is.  Cog.

It will be no surprise with the depleted WR corp to expect a heavy dose of multiple TE formations and Lacy running wild early on Sunday. That should get Nelson and Boykin (maybe Jones) some favorable man opportunities in the 2nd half.
