Starks seems to be at his best when he's the change up. He's not a bell cow, he's not the workhorse, he's the change of pace back. I think he's proven, since his time in Buffalo, that he can't take the beating of carrying the ball 20+ times per game over multiple games. He was used perfectly last night. Maybe 10 or so carries, not more than a couple on any given drive. Lacy is the workhorse and right now should be the leader for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

More carries for Starks makes me worried he will get banged up again.  I have little faith in Stark's ability to stay on the field.  He's notoriously been poor in protection as well, thought he seemed to do fine in his snaps yesterday.

They are two different running backs.  Lacy has great patience, Starks hits the hole hard.  I'm not sure who delivers a bigger blow to the opponent.  If Starks can stay on the field, he makes an excellent compliment to Lacy.  29/7 didn't look like a bad ratio to me.

(I still want to see Franklin more)

Franklin needs to improve his football smarts, that's for sure. Franklin is going to see the field much with Lacy and Starks dominating and that's okay. He probably needed a redshirt year even though he was pressed into service early.

I never understood using a RB on kick returns...guys like Darren Sproles are the exception. I guess if there is no one else available it's okay, but I have a hard time believing Franklin is their best option there. Who knows.

We all saw the potential of Franklin in that Bengals game, but right now it looks like the speed of the game is too much for him at times...which is understandable for a rookie. He's gonna be a good one though and will be lethal in the passing game as he matures IMO. Amazing the turnaround at the RB position in one season. It's one of the deeper parts of the team now

To my eyes Starks seems like a really good compliment to Lacy in that Lacy has a bit more patient pace to the start of his runs while Starks seems to hit fast.

Lacy starts his runs using his vision and is fantastic at reading the flow of the play, picking the best path (which he seems to excel at) and then accelerating through it with aggression.

Lacy is a big, thoughtful runner and a finisher.  The defense gets used to playing Lacy and the timing gets thrown off.  Starks hits into the line quicker. Makes it even worse that they're gassed from trying to get Lacy to the ground and now you have fresh legs coming at you fast when you're trying to catch your breath.

It's so much fun to have a running game again.  Doesn't feel like a great team without it.  Air yards make a defense shake their heads.  Ground yards make a defense bow their heads.  Chucking the ball all over the place is fun, but leads to all kinds of unintended consequences.  Running the ball well always feels like pure football.

All great points as usual, titm.  I'd add "stopping the run", also.  I'm enjoying the GBP games this year more than in a long time.  Smashmouth plus Rodgers is rather f-ing intoxicating.

Mike McCarthy impressed with Packers' latest performance

McCarthy, though, isn't surprised. He showed his confidence by stating in a press conference before the season that there would be a drastic improvement in the offense's run game. McCarthy explained Monday that his confidence came from two aspects: the players and the scheme.

"I thought we were going to be better personnel-wise all the way across," McCarthy said. "The primary individuals that are involved and the key responsibilities of running the ball better."

"We made some changes to our offense. I thought we were definitely going to be more physical as an offensive line, and that's held true. We've added some new faces to our running back group and these guys have stepped up. I thought it was clearly evident we would be better in the spring." continue

I think MM was also eying the forgotten man, DuJuan Harris, for that role too based on how fast he hits the hole...quite an embarrassment of riches at RB after a decade in the desert

from the GBPG  Cliff Christl and Barancyzk:

David Bakhitiari

"At age 31, Jared Allen might not be the player he was, but Bakhitiari took him out of the game. Bakhitiari does a good job with his hands. Both run blocking and pass blocking, he gets them inside the frame of his opponent. That’s somewhat unusual for a rookie to be that sound with his techniques.

Marshall Newhouse had the feet to play left tackle, but never played well with his hands. And because he didn’t punch well — he’d get his weight out over his feet. That’s where he’d get in trouble against Allen. Bakhitiari has better hands and, in turn, does a better job of keeping his balance."

I see Bak as the LT for years to come.  I'd assume Bulaga and Sherrod will battle it out for the RT job next season.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Sherrod take Barclay's job yet this season.

Tretter is a complete unknown at this point.  If he can push EDS or even take the job that's a plus.  EDS is playing very good football right now.

"Chucking the ball all over the place is fun, but leads to all kinds of unintended consequences.  Running the ball well always feels like pure football.    "

"There are 3 things that can happen when you throw the football and two of them are bad"- V Lombardi or C Knox or P Brown or or some other early savant.

RE: The Intoxication of balanced football. The effect this has on the rest of the team can't be discounted. When the O is all "Effin ya, we do what we want" the D and ST buy in as well. This team could tsunami the league.
