Packers Daniels no longer a fit for Pettine's defense

The one guy conspicuously missing is the former heart and soul of the Packers’ front seven, Mike Daniels. At 6-foot-0½, 310 pounds, Daniels, even with adequate arm length of 32½ inches, just doesn’t fit the model Gutekunst has set for his defensive linemen.

And so, it wouldn’t be surprising to find Daniels on the trading block.

He is entering the final year of a four-year, $42 million contract extension signed in 2015 and the Packers are probably going to move on from him next year. Clark is their anchor in the middle now and either this year or next, he’s going to be signed to a lucrative multi-year extension that will far eclipse what Daniels got four years ago.

Yep. I understand Silverstein's point that at 6'0, he no longer fits the mold of what Gutenheimer has now built, but the bottom line is Daniels can still play football.

Granted, he's missed 8 games in the last 2 seasons, but I just don't think you shed good players who can still play in the trenches where it matters. If anything, this depth should allow Daniels to stay fresher. And let's face it he's also in a contract year. He should have plenty of motivation to go kick ass in what will likely be his last decent contract.

I guess the idea of trying to get more than a compensatory pick for him makes sense but I wouldn't be in any hurry to move him just yet. While it's true that there seems to be a theme to the defensive players the Packers are now accumulating, we have yet to see whether this is really the key to any success. It's all just projections at this point. Agree PB there's always room for football players.

Pettine wants inside pressure. Losing Daniels puts the full weight of inside pressure on Clark and that's just not a positive situation for the young man. Don't subtract productive pieces when you're trying to make a run.

Trade him for something of significant value? Sure that should always be on the table for all but your most valuable of players.

Trade him just "cuz"? No. God no. He may not be a perfect fit, but the guy can play when healthy.

Realistically though, no one is paying anywhere close to "equal" value for a guy that has been injured a lot, is in the last year of a contract, and on a team has gone through a lot of changes on this side of the ball. Best case you get what, 50 cents on the dollar for him?  Probably closer to 25 cents.

Unless you literally have no use for him in the scheme even as a backup, and you want anything for him, I mean sure. But that seems like a stretch and having guys that have proven themselves playing a position where injuries happen all the time seems like something you don't just give away.

Uhm...you need to get up to speed with how Pettine is going to be getting inside pressure.

What the hell do you think all the new interchangeable Chess pieces are for?

The whole FA and draft were just used to set it all up and here you are acting all "Expert" again...but living in 2018.

Buy a vowel or sumptin.

Football players come in all sizes even 6 footers.  Replacing Daniels with a bigger faster player that doesn't make plays is dum.

Moving a big man playing for a new contract is also usually dum.

Getting rid of a productive football player for the sake of doing so is stupid. Daniels will be 30 soon but he can still wreak havoc on the interior.

Keep Daniels for the final year of his contract and let him walk in FA for a comp pick.

What's the best we would get for Daniels anyway...a 3rd? Sorry, but having a reliable guy, 6' or not, given how many injuries we've had is worth more than that 3rd (best case IMO).

There's another 6' 290lbs inside DL that does pretty well...Aaron Donald. No, MD isn't AD, but the assertion he doesn't fit Pettine's scheme is bullshit.

I'll be the first to say that my perception may be wrong on this as I didn't watch the Pack as closely last year as I have some other years, but I thought Daniels took a couple steps back last year.  I recall him missing a lot of training camp and then when he did finally get healthy he didn't seem like the outstanding player I remember him once being.

Even before this thread was started, I sort of thought based on last year that Daniels might be on his way down.  Here's to hoping Daniels has a great year and proves me wrong, but I didn't get the feeling he was the same guy who had been one of the better DTs in the NFL.  Maybe someone will have a stat that proves I am full of sh&$t with my opinion, but I didn't think he was the same guy.

The bite hasn’t matched the bark with Daniels.  And I say that because he barks a lot.  If you don’t think so just ask him.

He reminds me of Randall Cobb circa 2018.  A guy that has aged and at this point is overpaid.   Can he still produce and make plays?  Surely.  But I think it’s one reason Gute may have taken the DL at pick 12.  More options and youth on the DL.  While I don’t think they will trade or release Daniels I would be surprised if he came back after this season.

Yes it is and one that has proven he can play.  I am no expert on what the Angry Bald Man wants in his players but it seems to me that there is one thing all DCs want and that is the ability to rotate bodies on the DL.

If Daniels can bounce back nicely from his foot injury you keep him around.  Sometimes you just can't replace experience.

Bullshit.  Daniels does a shit ton of the dirty work and people piss and moan about it.

You’re thinking like it’s 2016 dummy, open your eyes and see what Angry Bald Dom Capers is planning for 2019!

Right..  and if he signs elsewhere we probably get a 5th for him in compensation from the league.   So, your options are no more service and a 3rd or 1 year of service and a 5th.      I'll take the year.

We probably cannot afford the asking price of his next contract. But cutting or trading him now is dumb. I understand the reason for the hypothetical article. But let’s see what happens this year. Besides I like the guy.

So, the question is, has Daniels ever fit the mold? No matter the system, he has been too short, and no matter the system, he has been too good. Silverstein is reaching.

It's just an article and an opinion...that is his job. Don't take it soooo literal.

I would just assume keep him...but a possible high 3 would be very tempting and the idea isn't reaching at all.

Pettine might have his own ideas on this ...thinking we would be further ahead in a year forcing some youngsters to develop.

It's not THAT out there.

Sorry, just prefer writers who are not interested in manufacturing drama. That's my opinion. Take it as literally as you like.

Maybe I'm missing something, but we should trade one of our best inside d-linemen cause we seemingly had a good draft and signed promising FA ? That seems a bit risky to me. I'm a big fan of the FA signings and liked the draft, but Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark form a very solid tandem. Lets enjoy the depth and versatility and watch the new guys settle in before we get too giddy with our overabundance.

BTW, Mike Daniels in a contract year ? Let the mutha ****er loose !!!

I think the evidence is in that he wears down. And it’s not just the missed games- it’s the lack of effectiveness as the season goes on. First 4 weeks he’s the guy you’re paying on the contract. The other 12+? Not so much.

I don’t think you need to trade him, but you don’t invest long term on a guy like that anymore.

The last couple of years or so, both Daniels and Clark were forced to play way too many snaps (DL injuries).
Let's hope that definitely changes this year. We've got the guys to form an excellent rotation; they just gotta stay healthy...

Actually, you just described a perfect player when put into a functional rotation.

I am 6’4” and go around 255. I cannot imagine going somewhere between 55 and 80 snacks (typo on purpose) against players that have 20-30 pounds on me through an entire game. Doing it on a weekly basis would be daunting.

MO, Daniel’s has been being asked to do way too much because GB has nothing to put in to give him an adequate break.

Think about it. Daniel’s is just fine when used properly and not axed(ny) to do what he is not physically able to do on a realistic basis.

Of course he wears down.
