Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke with the media for about five minutes following Thursday's practice. Here are the highlights.

On Datone Jones not practicing:

Datone did not practice today. He's not recovering as fast as we thought. He made some progress Friday for Saturday, but it's not coming along. He was just testing it out yesterday.

On Cam Newton:

He's a big-time player. He's obviously the focal point of their offense. He can do things running the football and passing it through the air. Very talented.

On Tramon Williams and Sam Shields:

They're getting better. Didn't get any updates today. Tramon is still further ahead of Sam.

On Bouncing back from Miami heat:

They're fine. They had a chance to bounce back Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, they just had the helmet on. Our padded work was what it needed to be. I'm actually excited to watch the tape.

On Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin:

He's big, physical, goes up for the football. He looks to be a favorite target for Cam Newton. He's got big-time ability. Big catch radius.

On Panthers TE Greg Olsen:

I think Greg is playing excellent. I don't know what his numbers are, but we've always had a lot of success for him going back to Chicago. He's having a heck of a year.

On working Jarrett Boykin back in:

I don't think so. I thought yesterday he needed to go through the practice to kind of get through. He did a bunch of stuff today. How he goes through the evaluation tomorrow will probably be a pretty good indicator.

On Demetri Goodson's readiness:

We've got 63 guys in the building we're counting on. Demetri will jump in in a heartbeat if he needs to go.

Hey, Marvin!

Those headaches and fogginess that most players experienced regularly throughout their careers? The stuff everybody ignored because claiming injury from a headache was malingering? That wasn't football-itis. That was concussions. The fact that you consider it "normal"  means you still don't grasp the nature or severity of the injury. The protocol is in place to protect against people like you.

I'm thinking Marvin Lewis may have been 'dinged' a few times.

Neil, Ben, and Sam.

90 percent of what you see on the current site has been completed by either Ben or I - Neil

Ben - Director of Analysis at Pro Football Focus. University of East Anglia. BS in Ecology

Sam - is an analyst at PFF. His real job is as a Sales and Marketing Director in Dublin, Ireland.

Gebins to these guys for spending time each fall reviewing games and then spewing stats to their site while generating some revenue with their fanboy POV. What's really funny to me about them is that they have been following American Football since 2005 and yet have national media types quoting their grades like something from a pro scouting service. Patty should head over to the UK and hook up with these guys.

From Green Bay Press Gazette chat today:

Comment From Mike W If Shields and Williams can't play, are the Packers in trouble?

Robert Zizzo:
Not necessarily. I say that because Davon House and Craig Hayward are better than your average backups. They both have a lot of snaps behind them. Plus, the Carolina receiving corps is not among the best the Packers will face. Kelvin Benjamin, their best receiver, is a rookie and is still limited because of a concussion he suffered last week. The guy that the Packers should most be concerned with is Greg Olsen, the tight end who has come on of late.

I guess they're so above average a local beat writer can't remember his name.

GO PACK GO!  Incredible fall weekend in the GB area - what fall and football is all about.

Damn, if I actually HAD seats I would have tried that in the 70's and 80's...I sure hope it works for you!
