Jermichael Finley has caught 15 of the 17 passes he has been targeted on this season.

Most of the Bear rushing yards came on Cutler's scramble late in the game. Would've been great to hold them to four yards, as the announcers were saying before the Cutler run.

I heard that the last time Chicago rushed for this few yards in a game, Gale Sayers was in elementary school.
Yeah, I believe it was 1956 at Yankee Stadium.

quote:-Masthay: Can someone explain to me what the eff happened? They keep saying the Bears faked it but isn't the direction of the punt determined before the snap? Not sure we can blame Slocumb for that one as the ENTIRE team ran to the right side of the field. Apparently only Masthay thought it was going left.
that was not on Masthay. he did what he was supposed to. all the rest of the guys got sooked by the trick play. well executed by chicago except the holding which from what I've read we can thank Jarrett Bush for creating.
the bears did us a favor by bringing that one out now and then screwing it up. hopefully, won't get fooled again.
+ Having the chance on Dec 25th to beat the Bears 4 times in the year 2011.
I think Starks performance had more to do with Chicago's defense being more geared towards stopping power running plays than zone running plays. Grant ripped off huge chunks of yards on zone runs while Starks got stuffed on the power plays. His fumble was inexcusable, but lets remember he's only in year 2. Teams like Philly and New Orleans are faster and can stuff the zone plays, but they struggle against the power runs. McCarthy didn't do Starks any favors by giving him half a dozen draw plays to run.
Positives:
Very impressed with Newhouse. I thought he held up really well.
Jarius Wynn looked like a really solid pass rusher. Him and Neal will be a really solid duo.
Sam Shields made some good plays.
Morgan Burnett had a really solid game both against the pass and when supporting the run.
Clay's TFL on Forte was awesome!
Redzone D continues to be fierce.
Grant looked like the 1200 yard runner from a couple years ago.
Lattimore is a monster on special teams.
Negatives:
Tramon looked a little sluggish. He needs to knock off the rust.
I thought the playcalling was weak on offense. McCarthy kept trying to establish the run with Starks and Chicago wasn't buying it. He goes to the well on running plays that just aren't working too often.
This team is D*MN lucky that punt return got called back. It was a great play call by Chicago, but it was undisciplined play by our coverage unit.

Crabtree is ****ing hilarious. We should start a running thread of his tweets.
I'm not gonna crap all over the playcalling but I did find it a bit frustrating to see GB pass the ball up and down the field and then run the ball in the redzone only to end up kicking FG's.
Why weren't the Packers punting the ball out of bounds, especially on the last punt. It almost seems like we were asking for their ST to make a play like they did.
LOL, looks like GratefulPack beat me to the punch as I was typing this up. I agree with you 100%.
------------------------
Still trying to figure out why the last punt was in-bounds. I almost didn't even watch the play because it seemed so obvious the Packers would just kick it out of bounds instead of potentially giving Hester a big play. What exactly had the Bear's offense done in the second half? Seemed the only chance the Bears had to get back in the game was to get a big special team's play on that return. Even if Masthay shanks it and only gets a 15 yard punt, the Bears only have 1 minute with no timeouts to gain 70 for a TD, successfully execute an onside kick and then gain another 20 yards for a long field goal attempt. Why did Hester/Knox even get a chance to field the punt on that play? I realize the Packer's pass defense has been terrible and there have been numerous breakdowns in the secondary, but after watching that Bear's offense for the second half.......
Did McCarthy have any comments on that play in the post-game? Either the punter did a terrible job not getting the ball out-of-bounds, or it was a significant oversight by McCarthy and Slocum allowing the Bears a return.

quote:Itâs clear in the television replay that Graham makes contact with Bush coming off the line of scrimmage. Graham, the Bearsâ best special teams player, was upset afterward.
âIt unfortunate that something we worked so hard on would be called back because of a play by me,â Graham said. âIt was maybe 30, 40 yards away from the play. It wasnât blatant but it was just a bad play by me. I should have just let him go, just donât even touch him. He had nothing to do with the play.

That's ironic, since MM has had "poor awareness" concerning Slocum's performance as a coach for several years now.
Flag comes out before Knox catches the ball. You can't really see it but 21 holds Bush off the line and down the field as JB got a great jump.
You can just glimpse it on the wide-screen shot before they tighten on the clusterf*** of Packers around Hester. The Bear player has hold of Bush's jersey on the back. The Bear player was correct when he said later he should have never even touched JB since he wasn't going to make a difference.
Funny thing -- can you imagine what Masthay was thinking when he kicks left, the entire team goes right, and he now is the only white jersey left to try to bring down Knox? He gives it the ol' college try, but he had to be swearing!

âIâve got to just let him go. Iâve got to not even touch the guy.â

After watching it again, a couple of things strike me:
1. Masthay kicks that ball so close to going out of bounds that Knox fields it at the absolute sideline at the 10-yard line. Masthay came thisclose to hitting it out perfectly at the 10. If the team had been aware of it, they would have had Knox pinned on the sideline. If Masthay had kicked it another 2 yards short, it would have gone out perfectly inside the 15. Right from the kick, you can see where Masthay is aiming.
2. Watch Bush all the way down the field. Even as the rest of his teammates swarm Hester, Bush races to the 5-yard line and then looks up for the first time. He realizes what's happening, slaps his hands together like "darn," and then points to Knox about 25 yards up the field.
If I were Slocum, I'd lay low for a very long time... and be very glad I still had a coaching job.

I understand everyone questioning why TM kept the ball in bounds. But when I saw the receiver was pinned to the sideline my first thought was that it was an excellent kick. Then I realized we were watching GB's special teams and all bets were off. Anything can happen!!!
Joe Buck initially said Hester had called for a fair catch. If he had and Knox returned the ball , I believe it would have been flagged.
I don't believe he did call the FC, just came up making it look like he was going to catch the ball. Good design.
Pack almost had another on-sides ko line-up to end a game.

Had it not been for the penalty, that play would have gotten as much media attention as the Connolly return against the Patriots last year.
Embarrassing!

I don't think this play can be blamed solely on Slocum, However, I do believe it is the result of Slocum's poor coaching overall.
Why is MM saddling himself with poor coaches in some cases? I don't get it. I really wish we could have the Jets ST's coach. That guy is great!
So did Mathis kick in the right direction and the entire punt team go for the fake, or, did Mathis kick it in the wrong direction?
Looks like Bush is the only one doing what the play calls for.

who does Johnny Mathis kick for?
Matt Bowen, a former NFL safety and writer for NFP and the Tribune, was on the Score this afternoon. He calls in every Monday after the Bears game and gives great insight into the game.
His take on the play is what some of us have suggested. Regardless of which direction of the punt is called, guys have to follow the return team in the even of a bad hit/shank. He said the moment the coverage team starts looking up in the sky to locate the ball, he'll find a helmet under his chin.
He made another great point that it was a waste to use such a perfect play when the odds still would have been heavily stacked against the Bears pulling off the comeback.
I'll give Slocum a pass on this one since its never been seen in any level of football ever.

When I heard there was a flag, I immediately thought Hester called a FC and Knox advanced the ball illegally. But looking at the replay, I did not see Hester raise an arm, so it was legit. I believe he extended his arms forward preparing to catch the ball. Good design is right!

+ OL in the running game and protecting Rodgers.
+ great effort of the WRs in times when Rodgers threw high or away.
+ Great use of TE to attack the weakness of Chicago's safeties.
+ Road win in the division.
- OL penalties.
- Rodgers not at his sharpest in accuracy (still better than Cutler's best).
- Peprah needs to be the next man up.
- McCarthy wins again, but still needs to develop that killer mindset.
- Slocum still employed.
Hard to say, but this was Rodgers' least accurate game (of only three). the best part is he still threw for 298 yards and three TDs against the Bears. Go back and see how many times someone had to make a falling, spinning or jumping catch. Out of character for A-Rod, but he still did better than most others' best days.

Ditto to all this. Special teams is still a hazard even if we give full credit to the excellent 4th quarter fake out. That the Packers got faked out of their socks is no indictment--almost all teams would. That it would be unimaginable that the Packers would have such a trick up their sleeves is telling. When the basics of blocking, tackling, and lane discipline are weekly challenges, what else can you expect?
Re-listened to McCarthy's presser from yesterday and he mentioned that CHI did the punt return fake earlier in the game but the Packers coverage team downed the ball. Could be that Lovie and crew noticed how most of the coverage unit followed Hester and left the ball to the gunner(s) only, who made the play and downed it without a return. If true, nice set-up by the Bears but that does not speak well for ST players or the coach. I've been a moderate supporter of Slocum because I've believed that at some point players gotta play, but this, if true, looks terrible for Shawn.
Fool me once shame on me, er, ah, I won't get fooled again.
Fool me once shame on me, er, ah, I won't get fooled again.
I always thought the only deception that could be used with the fair catch was to wave your arms, then let the ball drop. We are all aware you cannot wave your arm, then catch the ball and run, so I was surprised you could have a player call for a fair catch, then have another player catch the ball and run with it. I always thought your options when calling the fair catch were to catch the ball or let it drop. In looking at the rules, that particular scenario is not addressed.
i don't believe hester signaled fair catch, despite what buck said.
+ Rodgers
+ Finley
+ Jennings - and some of those were really nice grabs
+ Grant
+ Newhouse
+ run defense(awesome)
- defense giving up too many big plays
- Starks and much of the rushing offense, including play selection. I know you ought not pass the ball all the time, but so often a drive had the feel of "Well, we really need to run a couple of times so here's to a couple of 0-2 yard gainers, a stalled drive, and a FG attempt."
I thought the Bears offense really helped the Pack, such as with dropped passes and lousy passes.
