"You're not happy about it, but officials made a call. It really hurt us at the time; didn't think that that penalty had a whole lot to do with the play, " Bears coach Lovie Smith said Monday. “It's a play that we had kind of set up earlier with a few things that we did. Worked out perfectly. That play really could have gotten us back in. We're onside kicking and have a chance on a game that we didn't really play well."

So if a penalty happens away from the play, it really wasn't a penalty?

Asked about the play in his day-after-the-game news conference Monday, McCarthy said: “It's excellent design by Chicago and obviously was executed very well if it wasn't for the penalty. But there was a coverage issue from our standpoint that was not intact. But it's a good play. There's some things we'll look at as we move forward. ( It was a) very well-executed play, and they actually did it earlier in the game, one where we downed the ball on the 2-yard line."

Poor, poor coaching. A good coach, if he really had seen this on tape and earlier, would have reminded his players to make sure they look for the ball, have some faith that the kicker executes the called kick, look for orange jerseys on both sides of the field, and not just stare down Hester.

Slocum is a poor excuse for a coach/teacher and should have been shown the door a long time ago. I can't believe MM sticks by him. Maybe we could start a campaign to have MM fire So-dum heading into the bye-week so we can start fresh after it.
One of the negatives I've seen through all three games is the second half play calling with a lead.
I know conventional wisdom says run the ball, kill the clock and trust your defense to take care of business. But this NFL is a passing league. The bears went from their 20 to the GB 7 in 3 plays before halftime. Then took 1 play to score after Stark's fumble.
Rodger's accuracy and care with the ball makes an occasional incompletion moot when they're moving the chains. And teams are susceptible to play action when they think the clock's being run on them. (87 for 84 yards!)

Edit: having just reviewed the play by play, the Packers didn't get conservative in the play calling. There was a good mix of pass/run (7-7) from Stark's fumble on. Though the passes all seem to have been short routes, with only Jennings making a big play right before the interception by Urlacher.
The Patriots/Bills game is good example of why a team can not just go metal to the petal with the passing game.
Passing all the time can lead to more turnovers, risk injury to the QB, and does not burn time. And it is still early in the year, wait for colder weather and when players are hurting.

While the Packers Offence really slows down when they try to run they still need to try once in awhile.
