From JSOnline:

If the Packers thought Perry was taking too long to recover or wasn't putting in proper time to rehab, they're not saying. Perry said he's discussed his situation with Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy.

"I've talked to them, but I'm a pro as well, so I have to manage things," said Perry, who is now off the physically unable to perform list. "I have to take things upon myself. They can't make me do anything that I don't want. The main thing is me progressing and me making sure I feel good, and I feel comfortable and that's where we're at now."

This guy is a stiff.  I really believe he is trying to play his way out of Green Bay.  What's the value on "potential" for a 4-3 DE who loafs?

Crap. "They can't make me do anything that I don't want" is pretty much game over. Not something you see guy's come back from.

I had much higher hopes for him. Not sure why he didn't embrace standing up. He could have been a good one.

I wonder how high MM and TT ratcheted up the "WTF Nick?" dialogue with Perry? Sounds like it may have reached an uncomfortable level. That's a good thing. I also wonder if Daniel's comments weren't specifically targeted for Perry as well.

Your itchy trigger finger really isn't a good fit in personnel, isn't there somebody you should be shooting in the face ?

When I read those comments in the JSO this morning I just shook my head in disgust. Clearly Perry has some kind of attitude problem based on those comments.

Yet in other comments (GBPG or Wilde) he talks about getting over the hump injury wise and has lots to offer and will only get better.

But the JSO comments sure seem to make him out as a malcontent.

I don't think it's a matter of ability.  I think the guy has all the tools and could be a solid player at minimum.  During the draft he was bulking up in anticipation to get picked as a 4-3 DE.  Between injuries and feeling he's out of position I think he's just playing for a paycheck at this point.  Gets hurt, takes his time.  No urgency because he doesn't want to be in this system.

I just don't think he wants to be here.  Coupled with Dan Compers mad scientry (I like made up words) and little injuries he's disaffected.

Someone blogged that since coming off PUP, they have been playing Perry on the right side of the line where he's most comfortable in TC and it's also possible that Compers will design packages where GB is in a true 4-3 and he can rush with his hand down and how he wants.

Ted's not had the best of luck with defensive players taken in the 1st-2nd (CMIII aside). With Raji back where he should be, Datone healthy and stronger, Dix to eventually get playing time, and maybe this whiner getting what he wants,   perhaps it changes.

But right now, TT can't like what he's gotten.

I'm not completely sold on X4's interpretation of those comments.

We don't know the context, what question's were asked and we don't have a full transcript.

All we have is the reporters' angle and the cherry-picked quotes he chose to support that angle.

And his schtick comes out in the first paragraph of the article- "GB has nothing to show for its 1st round defensive draft picks" and goes on to include Clinton-Dix.

That's absurd in July. Really Tom ?

I'm still in Perry's corner  (a sure sign of failure), but if you guys can hold off on the lynching until mid-season you might be pleasantly surprised.

If not, we'll have a good turnout for the hang session

"I'm not completely sold on X4's interpretation of those comments."

Agreed.  Maybe he was trying to say he is doing what he is told and it coincides with what he wants as well.  Thus, they are not asking him to do anything he doesn't want to do.

It's a stretch but I want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt still.   Sometimes in print these things get twisted.

Still, I just don't think Perry has bought all the way in.

Here's how Perry will benefit:

MM talks about how he wants 3 down players on offense and the reason he wants to go fast is to prevent the D from substituting . Now, flip that over to the defensive side and the coaches know that other teams will try to do the same thing to GB

Try to get them in an unfavorable match-up, run up- tempo and keep them in that package. So to counteract that you need hybrid players who can do more than one thing and don't need to be substituted.

Peppers, Neal, Perry all fit that mold in that they can play in a 2 point stance standing up ( they are an OLB) or in a 3- point stance with a hand in the dirt ( they are a DL). Perry could be an OLB on first down and then a DL on 3rd

When GB marches out their defensive players, the offensive coaches won't instantly know if its base or sub merely based on personnel. You don't know where and how they will line up on each play and that's tough on the OC and the OLine

The same thing holds true with the hybrid "big safety/small LB" ala Richardson or Hyde. The offense isn't certain what package the D is running because the personnel are multiple.

We can pick up another hint here when MM talked about Joe Thomas the undrafted LB.

The guy is 6'1 and 227, not a typical 3-4 ILB at all.

In fact he's about the same size as safety Sean Richardson

The traditional thumpers at ILB are becoming dinosaurs, no more Bishops or even Hawks going forward because they can't cover. Look at what Pitt did this year and they run the same defense as GB. They drafted Shazier, a small, fast LB who would never fit in a traditional 3-4 under Le Beau.

Move to the DL- gone are the big Fatties that stuff the run ala Pickett, Wilson, Jolly and in their place are athletic DL that can play run AND rush the passer

The defense is evolving along with all the spread offenses and you are now seeing the complete make-over in what type/size/ shape of players fit in a 3-4 defense

Back to Perry - he can play OLB OR he can put his hand in the dirt and rush just like a 4-3 DE. That causes major targeting problems for the OL.

I don't think GB is switching to a 4-3 base, but they will use 4-3 looks like they did last year. The bigger change from what I've read is the fashion in which they will play the 3-4; the body types they use to execute the plan and the versatility of the guys on the DL and OLB.

That's where the Elephant comes in

So in some ways, the defense caters to Peppers, Perry and Neal and they become the offenses' version of a TE - you simply don't know for certain what they are going to do on any play. Compare that to a traditional 4-3 DE or 3-4 DE where the offense is pretty sure what they will do every time they line up

Just some food for thought; no clue if Perry will ever realize his potential in GB

I'm just really excited to see all the changes now that I've read about some of the strategery behind it.

Go Packers and sorry for the extended ramble...
