I think in order we need (and the order will depend on the health of some of our players):

1. We need a dynamic inside linebacker. We're just getting gashed by the run, and it's not only to the outside. Somebody that can tackle, maybe apply a little pressure up the middle with Raji. Bishop, Matthews and Perry are a good start on a linebacking corp, but we need an upgrade for AJ Hawk.

2. Offensive line. Again. We've spent two first rounders the last two seasons, do we do it again? Sherrod could be a good one, and if he can come back from injury, it would help a lot. Same goes for Bulaga. But we have to solidify this. Aaron was sacked 51 times this year, and he was running for his life against the Niners tonight. Drafting an every down running back won't help until we solidify the line.

3. Running back. This running back by committee works in some circumstances, but we're just too poor on third and short, and it kills too many drives. We need a back that can consistently gain between the tackles, with the speed to get outside. Harris is a nice change of pace back, Green might be better next year a season after knee surgery, but they're not every down guys. Harris isn't big enough to sustain carrying the ball 20 times a game. Sooner or later, the little guy is going to get hurt.

Yeah, I saw Iuputi and co. opening those holes. Can we have the 9er oline?

Exactly, 3 first round picks on that line, and it shows.

You can draft a whole pile o' $hit in the first round too.

BPA generally works best.
This team has had a great multiyear run including a Super Bowl win because TT hit it big on two first round picks that we're the 24th and 26th picks. Two potential hall of famers that late in the round is incredible. Then signing a supposedly washed up Woodson turned up another hall of famer.

He hasn't drafted poorly the last few years. He just hasn't gotten another superstar. Teams win Super Bowls by pairing 2-3 superstars with a few other very good players and making sure they don't have liabilities.

Rodgers and Matthews are still superstars but Woodson is no longer elite and we never replaced Nick Collins or Culln Jenkins. That's the difference the last two years.

The NFL is set up for parity. A team is not supposed to have 18/20 nonlosing records. We've been spoiled with Wolf and then ith TT so quickly cleaning up Sherman's mess.

It's a disappointing end o the season, but I'd rather have TT an anyone else to rely on.
Gb needs to find a MLB or two that can diagnose a play, attack the line of scrimmage and knock somebody the **** out every now and again.

I'm also not convinced we have found our OLB opposite CMIII. Perry looks more like a DE to me. Might be worth it to bulk his ass up and put him on the line.

Offense line, offensive line, offensive line.

The nasty hitter at LB might be the only way to stop this read option stuff. Getting drilled hard might sow down these running QBs. Did Kaepernick even get hit on any if his runs? He had the cleanest jersey firva guy running for 180 I've ever seen.
See that's the thing. TT is heralded for finding these undrafted guys on the street. Some of them are players (Shields comes to mind...there are others). But some of them are just guys filling a uniform and playing. I don't necessarily dislike Walden, but he's a limited football player. So are Barclay, Dr. Jennings, EDS and Van Roten for example.

Good post.

We've got the best QB in the game. Even with Jennings likely leaving, Nelson, Jones and Cobb give us one of the best receiving corps in the NFL. Finley stepped up big time in the second half, so maybe he's back to being near the player he was before the injury?

On defense, Matthews is a stud, Raji had a great second half, we have some young guys in Perry and Worthy that I'm excited about.

Fix the offensive line, get a inside linebacker, and a running threat (not a 30 year old guy), and this team can be right back in the thick of things.

I do know that we need to get more physical as a team. I think the Packers are a fineness team for the most part, and against more physical teams, we struggle too often.

I trust Ted to get the pieces we need.
I agree. It's fine to have role players like that, but you can't have a team of role players.

The difference between San Fran and GB, aside from the OL, is the ILB's. Willis and Bowman are all over the field making plays. Willis was a terror blitzing and Bowman was always in the right spot in coverage. And both shed OL and tackle the ball carrier. Look at GBs defense, were Hawk and Jones even on the field? San Fran dominated getting to the 2nd level and making those ILBs non-factors. You can't do anything when you're ILBs are crapping their pants. Hawk is due 7.5 million in the offseason, if they agree to pay that with the level of play he's putting out, then someone deserves to be fired immediately. I know there are some who think it's knee-jerk or an overreaction to say Hawk flat out sucks, but he f'ing SUCKS!
Play calling doomed the Packers. (1) first 3 offensive plays were short sideline passes - one was to John Kuhn who couldn't catch the ball. John Kuhm runs the 100 yard dash in 1 minute and 30 seconds and is a 250 pound marshmellow. Packers never got into sync to start the game. (2) What is a rookie Ross #10 trying to catch a punt in a playoff game (and fumbled) who joined the team several weeks earlier. Why didn't Cobb start the game or play on the punt team in the first quarter? - He entered the game earlier - why not sooner? (3) Why not go for the fouth and 2 yards with nine minutes remaining in the game and down 2 touchdowns when the 49ers just drove down a tired GB defense for 93 yards and a TD? McCarthy gave the ball back to opponent by punting - the 49ers again took the ball and drove down the field for another 93 yard Packer pounding to score another TD. Duh. (4) having Driver suit up and not play was a distraction and letdown for the team regardless of the outcome of the game.

49ers had the previous week off and it showed.

Packers with a bye and playing in Lambeau are a totally different team. Dismantling or restructuring the team for next year is not required. Better team head coaching LEADERSHIP is the difference - McCarthy is not a leader but good admninistrator.

Kinda like last year? How'd that Giants game work out?

And how many SB winning teams has Harbough coached? Two years ago MM had his team fitted for SB rings the day BEFORE the SB. He's a leader. Things need to be fixed before next year. He'll get it done.
This team really isn't far off. The Packers don't need a major overhaul. Some improved luck with health next year will certainly help (but the injuries alone shouldn't have kept the Packers from the Super Bowl this year. We had it just as bad in 2010).

How Ted keeps our top guys signed, and addresses some areas in need of improvement, will go a long way in determining what we do in 2013.
