He wasn’t an all timer in GB but a very good player.  Had the fewest snaps of the primary edge rushers on Sunday which was a signal. An underrated leader too.

Wish him well

@TomSilverstein:   Not totally surprising given Smith’s snaps have been going down. Let’s we if the #Packers make a deal for another pass rusher. Kingsley Enagbare would be most likely starter. Should mean Arron Mosby or Brenton Cox Jr. will see more time.

@mattschneidman:  The Packers are getting a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Steelers for Preston Smith, according to a source.

@TomSilverstein: Have confirmed this deal is going through. No changes to Smith’s contract, so # Steelers expected to pick up rest of his pro-rated $3.2M base salary and $900K roster per game.

Smith will count for $5 million in dead cap next year.

A 7th round pick seems a bit light.

Yes, but Steelers are picking up the contract too. As noted above, up to $4.1 million for the remainder of the season and $13.5 mil for 2025

EDIT: Ken Ingalls with more on this:

@KenIngalls:

Green Bay Packers' trade of Preston Smith will create:

🔹$2,023,529 of 2024 salary cap space
🔹$9,881,000 of 2025 salary cap space
🔹$18,207,000 of 2026 salary cap space
🔹$1,667,000 of 2027 salary cap space

Eh, production is pretty low for a guy about to turn 32 with cap numbers he would never see in 2025-2026. 7th round pick seems about right for 8 games then cut him loose.

I'm thinking there's a trade or two in the works that will get us some pass rushing help now.

This is the actual trade right here.  I feel like most of the trades happening today are more about money than anything.

Extremely exciting Preston Smith trade.

Not only did the team get even younger, but now GB will have 8 picks in 2025.

Doesn't get much better than having the youngest team and an extra 7th round pick for Packer fans.

But I think the Packers are still on the hook for 5 million in dead cap space in 2025. That's the same as it would have been had they simply released him after this year. The future salary cap space was never going to be a factor.

They do clear 4.1 million for the remainder of the season, but Preston Smith is a solid guy at a position they aren't necessarily deep at. At least they got a 4th rounder for Rasul. A 7th round pick is basically nothing.

Interesting how we aren't deep at D-line but all we heard all off season was how dominant this D-line was going to be.  I swear every year whatever part of the team we get excited about in the off season ends up being a huge let down.

Also we got a 3rd for Sul not a 4th.

Well, the trade deadline has come and gone. No additional moves made by GB. With the open spot now on the 53 they will sign or claim someone on the street, elevate a PS player or sign a PS guy from another team.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes the Preston Smith trade seem even worse.

Maybe they see something in practice about Luke Van Ness that we aren't aware of, but more snaps for LVN doesn't seem like a winning strategy based on what I've seen

Yes!
IIRC, the game announcers were giving credit to Smith for a sack, then had to correct themselves to Mosby during the replay.

Sources: The #Steelers aren’t done. They are trading for #Packers veteran pass-rusher Preston Smith.

One of the NFL’s best defenses gets better.

They had to get somebody to cover Zay Flowers, Tee Higgins, Jerry Jeudy.....
