He wasn’t an all timer in GB but a very good player. Had the fewest snaps of the primary edge rushers on Sunday which was a signal. An underrated leader too.

I personally worry more about losing his leadership than his play on the field.

@TomSilverstein: Not totally surprising given Smith’s snaps have been going down. Let’s we if the #Packers make a deal for another pass rusher. Kingsley Enagbare would be most likely starter. Should mean Arron Mosby or Brenton Cox Jr. will see more time.
Preston is still only 31. Steelers play a 3-4 which he should be better in than the 4-3.
Hmmm. I guess they think Mosby can step in? Sure as hell isn't going to be LVN.

Smith will count for $5 million in dead cap next year.

Eh, production is pretty low for a guy about to turn 32 with cap numbers he would never see in 2025-2026. 7th round pick seems about right for 8 games then cut him loose.
I'm thinking there's a trade or two in the works that will get us some pass rushing help now.
Getting a pick and shedding some payroll is a precursor to another Packers trade? Maybe to bring in someone?

But I think the Packers are still on the hook for 5 million in dead cap space in 2025. That's the same as it would have been had they simply released him after this year. The future salary cap space was never going to be a factor.
They do clear 4.1 million for the remainder of the season, but Preston Smith is a solid guy at a position they aren't necessarily deep at. At least they got a 4th rounder for Rasul. A 7th round pick is basically nothing.

Interesting how we aren't deep at D-line but all we heard all off season was how dominant this D-line was going to be. I swear every year whatever part of the team we get excited about in the off season ends up being a huge let down.
Also we got a 3rd for Sul not a 4th.
Well, the trade deadline has come and gone. No additional moves made by GB. With the open spot now on the 53 they will sign or claim someone on the street, elevate a PS player or sign a PS guy from another team.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes the Preston Smith trade seem even worse.
Maybe they see something in practice about Luke Van Ness that we aren't aware of, but more snaps for LVN doesn't seem like a winning strategy based on what I've seen

@WesHod: Gutekunst on the open roster spot: "MarShawn Lloyd is coming off IR pretty here soon, hopefully. That could factor into it."
Mosby looked decent in limited play last week. Cox has always been interesting, would like to see what he can do with more snaps.

Hate this so much. Yes, Preston is a better fit in a 3-4 but he’s been steady, available and a good leader. LVN and Enagbare aren’t comparable replacements.
