Whoa. Westies, others, whaddaya think?

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders, rivals on the field, are moving forward together on a plan to build a $1.7-billion NFL stadium in Carson that they will share.

The Chargers and Raiders will continue to seek public subsidies for new stadiums in their home markets, but they are developing a detailed proposal for a privately financed Los Angeles venue in the event they can't get deals done in San Diego and Oakland by the end of this year, according to the teams.

In a statement given to The Times on Thursday, the Chargers and Raiders said: “We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises.”

... This latest high-stakes move was precipitated by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who announced in December his plan to build an 80,000-seat stadium on the land that used to be Hollywood Park.

That put pressure on the Chargers, who say 25% of their fan base is in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The Raiders, among the most financially strapped NFL teams, joined forces with the Chargers because they don't have the money to build a stadium on their own.

... All signs point to the Chargers and Raiders — like the Rams — targeting the 2016 season for relocation, should those teams not get acceptable deals to remain in their current cities. The NFL has long held that L.A. is a two-team market, and it's almost inconceivable that the league would allow three teams in such close proximity.

The NFL has ruled out any teams' relocating this season, and is strongly opposed to a franchise's enduring more than one lame-duck season in a market about to be vacated. A team or teams moving to L.A. would play for at least two seasons in a temporary home — most likely the Coliseum, Rose Bowl or possibly Dodger Stadium — while a new stadium was under construction.

Using LA as a negotiating tool has been going on for years, but they just spent the cash to make the lever a little bigger. Raiders also threatened going to San Antonio a few months back. (Yawn)

The Mayor of San Diego and Chargers' owner Spanos are scheduled to meet on Friday - they've been lobbing insults at each other all week

The article cuqui linked talks about how the Chargers get 25 % of their fans from the LA area - what they don't mention is that the vast majority of those fans are displaced Packers, Steelers, Chiefs, Pats etc fans who go to San Diego to see their team.

A home game for Chargers-Packers is 50% Green & Gold.

Chargerfan won't step up, so the owners are salivating over the LA market - and they are happy to pay homage to Roger; note the submissive comments about how they will defer to the league/LA committee.

"Throughout this process we will respect the rules and procedures set forth by the League and defer completely to the ultimate decision of the NFL’s owners."

Conversely, Stan Kroenke of the Rams says; he'll do whatever he wants, eff the League.

I think Stan and the Rams are the winners, this is just a slightly more elaborate bluff by SD and Oakland.

Two hated division rivals sharing a stadium ? Yeah right...

Try that in the NFC north

look a little closer at that abomination of a proposal - the cruise ship is just box seating.  past the box seating is an open air field with open air seats on the other side.  what a horrible horrible design especially the propped up on pillars part.  but I guess the richies need to be up and away from the riffraff.

I'd love to see the Rams back where they belong, and fans WOULD support a winning team. My father-in-law was a die-hard Rams fan, but in their latter years in Anaheim the fans were boycotting what that foolish woman owner Georgia and her accountant friend who was running the team were doing to that franchise. They were voting with their dollars. But LA does have a grip of fans from elsewhere who still support their old team. It will always be thus.

The Charger owners used to be called the Spanos Goofs by an LA Times sportswriters. They're Idots.

It's really hard to believe the general public still falls for bull**** like this.  Last year the TV revenue alone brought nearly 190 million dollars to each NFL franchise.  Then add in other revenue sources (for the Packers it was nearly 140 million) and it's likely every NFL team is receiving somewhere between 300 and 350 million dollars each season.

Amazing how 99% of people out there will cry about corporate welfare (and with good reason), but when it's the local sports team they will allow themselves to get bent over and ****ed every time.

And why in the hell does every time a new sports stadium "need" to be built, it always seems to cost 300 million more than the one that was just built last year?

Couple of thoughts.  The first one is why in the world would you need a dome in SoCal?  The weather is perfect and it never rains it makes no sense.

My second thought is if you are the Chargers why in the world would you get yourself involved with an agreement with the Raiders?

This whole thing looks like the proverbial suicide squeeze with Kroenke doing his thing.  I think it's intended as a shot at the NFL itself as well.

That graphic looks like they told some kid in the graphics department to whip something up to make this look legit.

Where will the circuses be held if they don't?

I wonder if the history books will update the saying to "Cheetos and Footballs"?

Yup, can you imagine the Packers and Bears combining on a joint stadium ?

As stated above, they've been blowing smoke at each other for more than 10 years - ever since Tagliabue said there'd never be another Super Bowl in San Diego without a new stadium and even before that to a degree.

Every time the Spanoses have threatened to leave without us paying for the vast majority of their new stadium, the city has responded with, "Fine, then leave" and the team has always come crawling back.

It's the same thing this time - if you want to go, then go.  SD doesn't need an NFL team and it certainly doesn't need to be paying for a rich prick's playground.  Socialism for billionaires really isn't my thing - there's already more than enough of that.  I'm glad the county's voters have repeatedly told these clowns to get bent.  Keep it up.

OMG, I almost told that joke, but I stopped myself. Reason? Not funny. Thanks for the confirmation, Fedya.

Surfing in South Dakota?  Ouch!

Raiders, Chargers, Rams, Jaguars. Team with the best record in 2015 gets an LA stadium solo and the NFL pays the construction tab. Team with the worst record in 2015 gets kicked down the DII Super Region 3 where they can mix it up with Harding and Sioux Falls for a while and stop wasting everyone's time.

Kroenke is going to build his own stadium for one team in LA with his own cash. Do these clowns really think they can beat that deal for Los Angeles? Tons of people in LA are also dreading the idea of the Raiders coming back to town (think Raiders games in Oakland are rough? They're nothing compared to the gangsta element in LA), and no one would care about the Chargers. The Rams actually did have a strong following before the team became terrible in the early 90s and Georgia Frontiere alienated all the fans. They're obviously going to be the team to go to LA, the NFL wouldn't approve a weird scheme like this (no, not even Roger Goodell would go for this). What a cheap ploy from the Raiders and Chargers.

Tsk, tsk, Cavetoad.

You forget this is  the Vikings we're talking about.

2 teams makes sense in that the stadium gets used 20-21 weeks (including preseason) vs 10 weeks. But the Chargers and Raiders in same location? Smells fishy to me. If something seems strange follow the $$.

As far as Rams they have been gone a looong time too and I don't think there is a great love for them in LA anymore.

BTW, who came up with the stadium on stilts look?

Guess I'll stand outside and watch for free...
