OVERVIEW:

Played defensive tackle and fullback as a Florida prep. Attended Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia for one year. Originally committed to South Florida but was denied entry to the school despite meeting NCAA qualifying requirements. Enrolled instead at Southern Mississippi, redshirting in 2009. Played all 13 games in 2010 and recorded 17 tackles, five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. In 2011, he appeared in 14 games, starting seven at defensive tackle, and tallied 24 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks with one pass batted and one forced fumble. Was Southern MissΒ’ primary defensive tackle in 2012, playing in 12 games (11 starts) and totaling 36 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and one sack with one pass batted, one interception and one forced fumble. Started 11 games in 2013 and had 39 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and one-half sack. In the Golden Eagles' home finale Nov. 23 against Middle Tennessee, he suffered a deep bone bruise to his right leg that caused some internal bleeding and was not able to play the following week. Team captain.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS:

Flashes shock in his hands. Solid anchor strength. Versatile and lines up all along the front. Flashes speed and short-area burst to flatten down the line and close to the ball. Three-year starter.

WEAKNESSES:

Has short arms and small hands. Could do a better job working off blocks, creating separation and protecting his legs. Tends to wear down and tire late in games and effort wanes. Needs to develop more pass-rush moves -- stays blocked too long. Relies too much on his upper-body strength. Can be late to locate the ball and needs to do a better job of feeling blocking pressure and anticipating. Misses a lot of tackles. Minimal sack production.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Rounds 5-6

BOTTOM LINE: Has the size, brute strength and enough agility to warrant interest as a developmental, rotational five-technique in an aggressize, zone-blitzing scheme such as the Jets, Ravens or Steelers. Versatility is a plus.-Nolan Nawrocki

My take: This seems like it could be a reach, although Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. raved about Thornton during the ESPN draft broadcast.

J H TARBORO says:
Here are some notables from the NFLPA collegiate bowl practices:
National:
QB Connor Shaw S.Carolina
QB Dustin Vaughan 6’5β€³ 220 W.Texas A&M He’s the NCAA passing leader with 5,401 and 53TDs
He’s recieving praise for am strength and precision passing and NFL readiness.
RB Trey Watts Tulsa 5’11 200
WR Isaiah Burse 6’0 185 Extremely quick and sudden movements, good route runner and hands catcher, a natural! i could see him in a Pats uniform.
DT Khyri Thornton 6’3 300 Southern Miss. good get off and great power, impressing scouts.

I liked the HaHa pick.  Adams was an alright pick (i think Ealy would  have been better- but after picking Perry and Jones they probably dont want to invest in another edge rusher... again, rather see if one of those guys pan out).

But Thornton just screams bust to me.  Character problems + another DL with motivational/motor issues.  Spending a 6th to move up 5-7 spots and grab Borland was the value play here.  Heck even Nix who was available in a similar spot would have been a decent value to target, no character problems.. and was stellar in 2012 (still have the motor/fatigue issues.. but at least dude isnt a Clet Hunt in the making).

I hope the guy succeeds and Im wrong, but this is the type of guy we have seen before in GB... it just has never ended well here.

You're right on this, i think a lot of draft "experts" had him at being undrafted or rounds 5-7.

However, I think they spent a 2nd on him because they feared oakland? was going to draft him.  I can't remember the team.. but i remember them saying another team was in the mix on him pretty early and the secret was sort of out.

I think HaHa will be the answer at FS that we have been looking for since 2011.  He will continue in the long line of great safeties to play here in Green Bay.

Im concerned about this season because both of our lines are not looking very good.  I'd like to see another pass rusher emerge besides Daniels + Matthews + Peppers.. maybe Perry or Jones?  Both have major question marks still.  Perry can't stay on the field (17 games over 2 seasons, injuries..) and Jones really didnt show much in his time on the field (3.5 sacks, 8 tackles in 16 games).  Otherwise, we have the same jokers back for the most part.  The run defense is going to be epic fail unless Raji goes to Oz and finds a heart, AJ Hawk gets some courage, and if with the team Jolly finds a brain.  Give Ted Thompson some ruby slippers and away we go?
