As a rookie, probably a guy that will play on every ST unit. Should see some PT on defense, too. Bush should be very concerned.

Hard to say right now if this guy is a long term CB or FS.
I say you draft a CB who might also play safety later each year until Bush is no longer on the team. At that point, you might have enough talant. Until then, you don't stop.

Fast enuf, tackles, will keep our young DBs from getting complacent. Everyone knows that a rookie can push their way into the dime, so none of the young guys who looked good last year can sit back. They all need to step up or they'll be on the bench. Like DB, the tackle from colorado, a good player on a bad team. leader, respected but underscouted a bit maybe. Would have gone higher if surrounded by better players, but he was on Iowa, so what can you expect.

So, like the pick, especially since he is listed as a sure tackler.

5. MICAH HYDE, S, Iowa

NFC scout: "... He's not really a corner because he's not fast enough. But he has good ball skills. I'd take him on my team, but I just don't know what you do with him. He's not quite a cover corner, and he's not as physical as you'd like to be a Cover-2 corner. I'd take the player and then let the coaches figure out how he fits. Sixth or seventh round."

AFC scout: "No. No!"

AFC scout: "It ain't happening."
I've watched this guy for last 2 seasons(didn't get to see every game) but he plays the ball, catches it most of the time. Tough tackler too Probably best 2ndary player the Hawkeyes had. Good player...ask Daniels

There are literally hundreds of NFL scouts. The opinions of an unnamed few probably isn't indicative of much of anything.

Coach Q&A: Iowa's Phil Parker on CB Micah Hyde
jsonline.com

By Tyler Dunne on May 7th, 2013

What do you remember most about Hyde?
Parker: “Micah has a knack to make big plays obviously. To me, he always had great ball skills. He was a good punt returner for us. He could catch the ball. And he’d have some unbelievable receptions. You’d wonder how he made them. I think it helps that when he was in high school, he was a multi-sport guy. He played a lot of different sports so that helped him. He's a great person and I'm happy for him to have the opportunity to play for a great organization.

“Everybody says he’s not fast enough. And everybody says ‘is he tough enough?’ And then you see the good hits he makes. And then you see how he tracks people down. I know the Combine and all that, you never know how fast are you? Sometimes you’re just fast enough to make some plays.”

Should the public intoxication charge be a concern?
Parker: “Here in Iowa City, for him, if my kid only got that... he’s such a great kid. I felt bad for him with that. I don’t know exactly what went down totally because I wasn’t there. But he’s not that kind of kid. He never had a problem with me. I never had a problem with him missing meetings or working hard or getting in trouble with the law, anything. So to me, that was out of character. Sometimes, you’re in a bad place at the wrong time. To me, there’s no question about the kid’s character.”

Is there something different about Hyde that people don't know?
Parker: “He's not going to come in and be a real energetic, bubbly guy. He's a very flat-line guy. And the pressure, he goes through a game and is very calm. He says, ‘I got you coach.’ He's very flat-lined with his emotions, which I really think makes him a good player. He doesn’t get too high or too low. It could be a big situation and he comes out makes a big play like ‘Yeah, I was supposed to make that play.’ That's what I like about him. The plays that he makes, he expects himself to make." continue
Lots more past the click.

I'm not really sure why Micah Hyde fits - is he a safety or a CB- but the guy can play football and I like his versatility.    I think the only area he struggles a little bit is defending the deep pass over the top similar to what we saw last weekend against the Rams on the long pass completion.  However,  other than that one play he was very solid in pass coverage and run defense.

I like Jarrett Bush on special teams but to me it's clear that Hyde is a better DB and I think he's an effective special team guy in his own right so this might be the year that Bush finally gets the boot.   I have a hard time believing they keep both guys unless one of our DBs ends up on the disabled list before the season starts.

I didn't know Hyde returned punts for 2 seasons at Iowa. For some reason, I trust him in that role. Not sure who would handle kickoffs if Ross doesn't make the roster. Franklin has shown nothing so far.

It's funny that you say that because I feel the same vibe about Micah returning punts.

It's not really based on anything other than for some reason he just looks the part to me, from his demeanor. And those long gangly arms of his look like natural pigskin trappers, I guess.

Just something about the dude.He looks cool as a cucumber amidst chaos type of guy.

Hyde just looks like a football player with natural football skills.  From what I've read he's somewhat limited in some coverages but he finds a way to get it done.  The future looks pretty bright for him.

Biggest beef at Iowa...is he let a lot of punts go without trying to field or return them.

Was very sure handed...that was never an issue.

He can find his way through traffic and at the worst I think he can be a 7 yards and a cloud of dust returner for us.

I do not have the same trust for Ross....have the better feeling he could break one...but also have terrible feeling he will allow something dumdum to happen

Worse than that he looks disinterested in the roll. Outside of DJ Williams, Franklin has been one of the disappointments at the half-way point of preseason. My expectations were too high for the fourth rounder apparently.

I look at Franklin as a poor mans Reggie Bush. He's never running the ball between the tackles, especially given this OL's ability to open holes. He's never really returned punts or kick off's. That was really evident against St Louis when he half assed his way to field a punt, let it drop, and then touched a GB player for a turn over. Would have liked to have seen better effort but he's not a punt returner.

I'd like to see the guy get some opportunities out of the backfield as a 3rd down back. That's probably his best opportunity to show he can contribute. Haven't really seen much of it after two preseason games but maybe that's a reflection of MM keeping things under wraps?

There's no way he's getting cut though based on a few weeks of ineffectiveness. And there's no way to stash him on the practice squad either. He'd be gone, fast.

More his poor pass protection based on what I've read.

Between Alex Green and now Franklin, it looks as if TT is looking for a poor man's Reggie Bush type player. I had/have high hopes for both, but haven't heard much to get excited about yet.

I really like how TT tries to build his offense to be multifaceted. Not content with a couple of good WR and a pass catching TE. He ads more TEs that can fill various roles. A dynamic player like Cobb who can do a lot of things. He is trying to find a Reggie Bush type 3rd down back and then also using a high pick on a bruiser like Lacy.

It is like he looks around the league and then tries to get his version of a Steven Jackson and his version of Daren Sproles or Reggie Bush...his version of Percy Harvin and his version of Jimmy Grahm or Gronk. Trying to get all of those weapon types on the same team.

He doesn't have to be listed as a S for this group to be on the field at the same time.

"He doesn't have to be listed as a S for this group to be on the field at the same time."

No, but if he is staring opposite of Burnett, the number of snaps he gets increases drastically.

I know Capers plays a lot of nickle on early downs, but it's typically just playing his 3rd CB . (That will be Heyward)  In years past 5 db's, with Wood in the slot, was basically the base D (2 DL).  I wonder if that will be Heyward this year or if we see more conventional 4 DB's and 3 DL's on early downs.

I wouldn't worry too much about making Hyde a S just to get him on the field sooner. He is a rookie and being the 4th CB on a team that plays a lot of nickle isn't a bad spot to be for a rookie.

He can watch and learn and be available if (or more likely when) one of the top 3 CBs misses some time during the season.

Just like Butler...
