Notes:

Prepped in North Carolina, where he tallied 219 tackles as a senior. Suffered a knee injury in his final prep game which forced him to redshirt in 2008. Saw action in all 12 games, making three starts at weak-side linebacker, and recording 42 tackles, 2 1⁄2 tackles for loss and zero sacks with one pass breakup, one interception and two forced fumbles in ’09. Was the starter at WLB in all 13 games in ’10 and posted 75-10 1⁄2-4 1⁄2 with three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one interception. Led the ACC in tackles for loss in ’11 after posting 76-14 1⁄2-5 1⁄2 with five pass breakups, three interceptions and four forced fumbles in 11 starts at WLB. Suffered a knee injury against South Alabama, which required surgery, and he missed the next two games.

Positives:

Instinctive (reliable trigger). Athletic movement skills. Bends naturally. Attacks downhill and can scrape and fill. Flashes explosive striking ability. Good zone awareness and ball reactions. Plays hard. Has pass-rush/blitz ability — occasionally lined up as a rush end and shows coordinated hands/feet and agility. Solid special-teams ability.

Negatives:

Lacks ideal bulk. Too easily engaged, squared up and eliminated by linemen. Does not shoot his hands or detach quickly. Average speed — can be a step late to the perimeter and lacks finishing burst. Shows some hip tightness when he has to break down or quickly adjust. Overruns and slides off some tackles. Had incurred multiple knee injuries and durability could be an issue.

Summary:

A good-sized, weak-side linebacker who would have benefitted from another year of development, but declared with family considerations in mind. Is most ideally suited for a backup role in a 4-3 but has fine instincts and athletic ability and should help readily on special teams.

A couple of these sound like the anti-AJ Hawk.
It'll be interesting to see where he fits, but getting him in the 5th has to be a steal.

Kiper had him going in the 2nd round to the Ravens, and had him rated as the 4th OLB just behind Pakrz' Bear mancrush.

Maybe we could work out a trade since both teams have now drafted LB's that aren't obvious fits for what they do on defense?

Big Grin
Looks like Hawk may be traded to recoup one of those 7th rounders TT just used to get Hawks replacement.

No more draft picks left to trade so the war room has taken a run to Kwik Trip for some cig's, treats, beer and milk.

Does that mean that Colt is not coming to GB since TT has no more picks to trade?

Dude, seriously? 6'2" vs 5'10". College MLB vs college WLB. Xplain, please.
Take it easy, Hoss... I had read his height wrong- thought he was 6'0".

So who is he competition for? They just re-upped with Walden. I suppose Zombo, Francois, So'oto and Jones should all be updating resumes, eh?
Kiper:

Made "most underrated" list.

"...he play(s) the game the game with a vengeance and he got my attention immediately when I watched him on film. Manning plays at a frenetic pace, is a ferocious tackler, and he makes a lot of impact, highlight-type plays....he comes into the draft as a very unheralded standout who never got nearly the recognition he deserved for his time in Raleigh and for his value to the Wolfpack defense."

He's competition for all the LB's, including and especially AJ Hawk. I'm excited to see if this guy can get some playing time at ILB, it'd be nice to have some speed there.

Three out of the six so far were trade ups, which means that TT only has 50% lap-fallers at the moment.
Other than Bishop and CMIII (and now Perry), there isn't a single LB on our roster that has a guaranteed spot on this team. So yes, I expect Zombo, Francois, Jones and So'oto to have updated resumes.
I am hoping that GB takes another OLB in the 7th or gets a few UDFA's to boot.

I am hoping that the competition is so heated that it warms the Frozen Tundra. I am hoping that heated competition is so hot it produces a few diamonds.

Jones,Waldo, Zombo,Latte,Hawk ,Bishop , Francois,Smith and DeSooto all still have potential to get better and with the added competition a few of these guys will get better. If not dont let the door hit your arse on the way out!

Still falling in his lap, even if he did move his chair.
This guy reminds me of Hawk. He is a little quicker and looks like he covers better, but his tackling on the tape I have seen looks like Hawk. This isn't a bad thing, just saying we shouldn't expect much from him.
wow, didnt see this coming.

Terrell Manning could have definitely used another year to bulk up and refine his skills in coverage but family needs led him to declare early.
Definitely a med risk high reward pick. Ultra talented to the point
of attack. Consistently blowing up plays in the backfield.
Some scouts look to disagree but I thought he was abused in coverage at times.
I remmeber him batlling knee issues, hope his solid season & workouts put that to rest
Surrounded by other NFL picks in Nate Irving and Audi Cole
allowed him the opportunity to freelance and be put in many different looks.

in the 5th its a great pick. had he stayed I think he coulda been a 2nd rounder next year. High motor, high level of determination. that should take him far

Espeically under Greenes tutelage wouldnt be surprised to see him put in a year of solid ST and then breakout next year.

TM followed Stephen Tulloch here who also declared early and went in the 4th. Hope Manning has similar success
Me thinks with all these guys who "could have benefitted from another year in school" and "needs to develop" that TT has his eye on next year having the No. 1 defense. This also tells us how unhappy TT and the coaches were with the guys they have on D.

I think Bishop deserves to not make this list.
This might be the most interesting pick out of their entire draft this year

Was thought to have gone higher in the draft, but he fell and TT traded up to get him. Seems like more of an ILB than OLB, but has good LB quickness, seems to play hard, and sure looks like a LB instinctively when you watch the film. Seems to me the biggest issue was injury concerns, but for a 5th round pick that's the type of thing I don't mind taking a flyer on.
