I don't think Gute has any plans on signing any WR's mid-season.  Too much of a challenge to get any use out of him considering how AR handles newcomers.  But if Watson can't stay out of the tub he's going to have to do something.  Toure had moments in the PS but he's a really slight kid that would probably get buried with anyone jamming him at the line.

Big, big night for Sammy returning to play the team that drafted him and that he still loves so much.

Watkins finished with 1 catch for 3 yards tonight.

Watkins has 8 catches for 147 yards on the season. No TDs. He's been injured repeatedly.

There is a narrative that ARod won't throw to young players.

Tonight, Doubs had 4 catches for 62 and a TD. Toure had 1 catch for 37 yards and a TD. Even Amari Rodgers had a catch for 22 yards and Watson caught 1 for 12 yards before leaving with his latest injury.

Can we finally admit that the Sammy Watkins signing was a bust and that the youngsters need to start eating his snaps?

I'd release Sammy tomorrow.

I think the boom/bust potential existed since signing him, if not before. It was a gamble that has came up snake eyes.
I don't see the need to release him, though. The Packers need bodies at WR, any salary and per game active bonus savings is minimal, and he can't be taking that many snaps away from the rookies/young guys. Plus, nobody to replace him, unless they sign another PS guy to the active roster. Or a FA/trade, of course.

I think back to this off-season when the Pack looked for a veteran FA WR on the cheap.  The one guy who really panned out was JuJu Smith-Schuster.  Guys like Jarvis Landry, Allen Robinson, and Watkins really didn’t live up to what their teams had hoped for to say the least.

Edit: Allen Robinson not Marcus

The Packers paid next to nothing for Watkins so it's hardly a loss. The timing is a bit weird considering it's game day today.

At this point, he's a breathing WR with experience. Oh, he'll block a bit, but at this point, he couldn't separate from AJ Hawk. If anyone picks him up, it would be for deep bench help.

That is exactly what Ravens fans were saying about Watkins after last season when that WR deprived team moved on from Sammy.

Considering how cheap he is, if Watkins goes unclaimed now it would probably signal the end of his career.

My question is this ..... what did they see when they signed him? Videos back in Spring OTAs showed him to look "chunky" and slow. I would put a guy like him through same tests he did at the combine coming out of college to see how much physically they have declined.

Remember how excited 12 was when we signed him? My guess is he got to play GM and picked Sammy. BTW, he’s a shitty GM.

Would it be fair to say Gute isn't the best judge of vet wrs? If the thinking was, we drafted a crop of young guys and Cobby, Watkins, Lazard will be stopgaps while the draft picks get up to speed, I'll accept the rationale. It also felt like they believed they could make up for Davante's production by spreading it out over three or four guys. And that might have worked if the offense had been able to function like previous years. I know MVS didn't light it up in KC, but that isn't why Andy brought him in. He's been productive in their scheme and one of a wr group who benefits from a great qb. I get that Sammy was cheap and little risk, but whatever the plan was, Gute takes a fail on this one.

He was about as cheap as it gets as a veteran WR. The problem wasn't that they kicked the tires to see what he could give. I think the biggest problem was that Watson was hurt for large parts of training camp and for a large part of the beginning of the year and they kept Watkins as a stopgap. Even then, the Packers FO plan looked to have worked. Win games at the beginning of the year with Cobb, Watkins, and some duct tape while the rookies learned the offense and then hope Doubs and Watson learn the offense.

They got out of the gate 3-1 with games against the Giants, Jets, and Commanders next. At worst, that should have been a 5-2 start. Instead, they got swept, in large part because they had no deep threat to stretch the field. The first snap of the season they put on tape was Watson blowing by Vikings defenders for what should have been a TD. At worst, they replace MVS and force the DBs to play back a step or two. Instead, Watson gets dinged up, a concussion and ended up playing a total of 41 snaps during the 5-game losing streak. If Watson plays normal snaps during those games (or even half the game), they likely win at least 2 of them, and they are in the playoffs.

As somone else pointed out earlier in the thread, the other bargain-level veteran WRs weren't great options either.
