when we saw him at his rookie camp we were surprised how small he was in the upper body and lower legs.  buddy and I looked at each other like "that's a 1st round pick?"  the leg injury allowed him to beef up like crazy and I thought he'd come back a killa.  But when he got back he was still just sorta passive.  I'm not sure he ever had the I'm-gonna-dominate-you attitude.  guess we'll never know until the book comes out.

Sherrod wasn't much pre injury.

Couldn't beat out Newhouse, says a lot.

Guys like Backteria, Linsley, Lang, Tauscher and Clifton and many, many others have started games as rookies, yet the coaches continued to let Newhouse almost get AR killed rather than give Sherrod a try.

Here's Tom Silverstein talking about your hero:

"One possibility would be to put Tretter at left tackle and see if he would be a better option than David Bakhtiari, who has three holding penalties, had a hand in five sacks this season and allowed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to get knocked down at least four times."

As teams have more film to study, they are finding ways to beat Buck Cherry, often based on his limitations in moving laterally in pass pro. His run blocking has been pretty anemic too. Bak may have reached his ceiling quickly, but it appears to be a rather a low ceiling.

Sherrod either sucked from day 1 and Thompson whiffed big time, or he never developed after the horrid leg injury.

The Packers.com depth chart show no T depth (no more Sherrod) and does not yet list Tretter at any OL spot. They may take the week to decide on the possibility of Tretter as the swing T for now, or they will have to do some shuffling Sunday night if either T goes down.

They could bring up Jeremy Vujnovich from the practice squad.

Depends on your point of view eh ?

He was a developmental OT that never got the chance to develop.

CBA lockout killed one offseason, broken leg killed 2 more. Allen Barbre is on an NFL team, Breno has a ring and its likely the final chapter hasn't been written for Derek either

Developmental OT in the 1st round?

Good point on Barbre and Breno though. I do think the Packers are lacking in the area of being able to develop OLinemen overall.

I'd love to see TT nab La'el Collins or Spencer Drango (if his health checks out) in the draft come April. Bakhtiari seems an ideal swing tackle but I'd like to see a stud blocker starting over there.

It will be interesting if they extend Bulaga a contract with his inconsistent play this year. Not sure if Brian has played any better than Don Barclay did last year and Barclay is a lot cheaper. . Baktiari is having problems too. Looks like Ted needs to draft three tackles and three inside linebackers next year. Well at least two inside linebackers. Hawk is safe for at least another three years.

Bahk is a serviceable LT, teetering between good enough and below average. He's better than Marshall Newhouse, but not as good as Chad Clifton. I thought he would take that next step this year to being closer to a Clifton, but he seems to be closer to Newhouse right now.

I thought one of the upsides to Sherrod before the draft was that he was a polished, NFL ready OL? Great size and good athleticism and very consistent is kind of what I remember the book on him was. I wasn't a big fan of Sherrod before the draft because I didn't see the upside. As has been pointed out, I applauded the pick after he was a Packer because it looked like a safe pick and he would be a guy who would be a good OL somewhere on the line, but I never saw him ever having a high ceiling. He was never going to be a Orlando Pace, but at a minimum I hoped he would be consistent and reliable. And really Sherrod was the BPA at that spot...that draft had a whole lot of suck. The silver lining is that the Bears passed on Sherrod and drafted Gabe "The Hebrew Hammer" Carimi who flamed out long before Sherrod. I was really hoping for CB Ras-I Dowling who went 1 pick later to New England and his career has sucked a big bag of dicks so what do I know.

Go back and watch Clifton, that's what a talented NFL LT looks like for a passing offense.

No help, no special scheming. Just call the play and run it.

You mean the starting Right tackle for Atlanta?

Bakhtiari was a round 4 gift from heaven. GB would be all kinds of eff'd if we didn't have him at LT. He's no Joe Thomas but neither are 31 other starting LT's. Joe Staley has looked like crap this year along Matt kalil. Both 1st round picks that are regressing at an alarming rate.

Noooooooooo....

Sherrod couldn't overcome his coaching!?!?! I don't believe it. Chad Clifton did!

Campen appears to handle the interior guys better than the tackle spots. Anthony Munoz available to coach the Left & Right Tackles??

Tauscher is.

Good observation about Campen though. There are S coaches and CB coaches, ILB and OLB... why not OT and C/G coaching? Could be why they brought Marshall in. He's done a lot of work in his career with OTs.

How are we sure it's a Campen problem rather than a TT problem?

TT spent first round draft choices (notice plural) on OT.

This isn't a TT problem.

It's a combination of bad luck (injury) & bad OT coaching.

We're lucky to have Buck "You're crazy bitch....." Cherry

Which shows an issue with dysfunctional teams/coaching more than anything. Staley was pretty darned good up to this point. That doesn't make Bakhtiari more than a slightly better Newhouse. I like the guy, but his athletic ceiling is, shall we say, not very high.

It's a weird phenomenon.  Most fans agree that TT and MM are top shelf NFL men at their positions....

X4 has decided that Campen is a horrible football coach.  The same men we hold in such high regard (TT and MM), are obviously incompetent when it comes to selecting position coaches.

A quote comes to mind:

William James - "There is nothing so absurd that if you repeat it often enough, people will believe it."

Hey, what if its neither ?

Its an NFL problem; some guys make the leap from college to the Pros, some don't.

Some flame out for mental reasons, some flame out for physical reasons and some for both

But amazingly enough that's not always an indictment of the coaching or the scouting, its just the nature of the beast in projecting the future of young men

It clearly drives the "blamers" nuts though when they can't pin a tail on the donkey.

They struggle mightily in the vast gray area that exists between black & white

Take a good long look at the garbage that is in the 2nd & 3rd rounds of the 2011 draft.

NFL Draft 2011

We got the best player in round 2 at #64! (Cobb)

I did want Aaron Williams in 2011 instead of Sherrod but liked protecting the franchise too. Sucks it didn't work out.

@RobDemovsky: Former #Packers T Derek Sherrod went unclaimed off waivers, making him a free agent.

No surprise. No one will want to take on what's left of his rookie deal (he is in the last year). If he signs before season's end it would be at vet minimum I'd think, and if somebody needs an emergency signing. He'll be on someone's roster next season as a reclamation project.

One of the complaints about MM and TT, while still recognizing they are top shelf, is that they are loyal to a fault.

The weird phenomenon is expecting fans to ignore any possibility that there may be weaknesses.   After all, they won a Super Bowl 3 years ago so obviously everything they do is spot on and best in the biz.

When a disagreement is expressed, it's not a claim to be more capable of the job.  For crying out loud the point of message boards is to discuss opinions.  If your opinion always falls in line with the brass, why even bother talking about it?
