Happ is a very good college player but he has two enormous holes in his game

1) he can’t make a 10ft+ jump shot

2) he can’t hit free throws

To that extent he creates some issues especially when games are close.  If you are an opposing team you have to (and some do) foul him.

The TV announcer for this game said that Happ hasn't scored ANY points, this season, outside the paint. He's usually our scoring leader, but outside the paint and on the FT line, he can't hit anything. Fouling him late in the game is a sound strategy for opposing teams. The Badgers are done without him on the floor, too! They have no inside game when Happ is on the bench.  Both the team and the crowd were silent in the last 5 minutes of this game. No excitement, whatsoever! I hope Reuvers really steps up next season when we are truly Happless.

Let's say the Badgers end up as a 5 or 6 seed. If I'm the 12th seed and a big underdog, I slow the game down as much as possible and put in some guys off the end of the bench to foul Ethan Happ every time after they get into the bonus.

The Badgers average 66.9 possessions per game this year. They've averaged 70.1 points per game so that works out to 1.05 points per possession. If they foul Happ and he misses the front end of a bonus or both free throws, the opponent comes out way head. Even if he hits one of two, they'll still come out slightly ahead. He'd have to shoot about 60% from the line for that strategy not to work. He's 21 for 58 in Big 10 games (36%).

As soon as the Badgers get in the bonus, it's almost coaching malpractice for a less talented team not to foul Happ (and probably a good idea for even really good teams). He's one of the best players in the country generating offense from post-ups (whether his own FG or generating open 3s directly or via "hockey" assists). He's one of the worst FT shooters in the country.
